The war for Tokyo is about to get underway, and your finger’s on the trigger.
Industrious Japanese dev Hamster is bringing Bandai Namco’s 1996 arcade classic Tokyo Wars to the PS Store this week, as part of its Arcade Archives line. It’ll be out on 5th November for $16.99 on the PS5 and $14.99 on the PS4.

Here’s the blurb from the game’s official website:
“Tokyo Wars is an action shooter released by Namco Limited (current Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc) in 1996. Join the tank unit of the Green force or the White force and engage in battle through realistic city streets. Destroy or be destroyed – the war for Tokyo begins now!”
Tokyo Wars actually got a spiritual successor on the Wii U in 2012 named Tank! Tank! Tank!, but the title was critically panned for its repetition and lack of replay value.
However, the original was acclaimed for its production values, and destruction physics.
Obviously a lot of the tactile feel of the original – which used pneumatic haptics in the arcade – will be lost in this PlayStation port, but it should still prove an interesting oddity like Aqua Jet, which was also recently emulated on Sony’s system.

I love the Arcade Archives series, but I just can’t get past the new pricing for what are pretty bare bones ports. Include an art gallery or a few developer interviews and I’d be all over it, but for now it can go on my wishlist, next to Ridge Racer, waiting for a sale.
Get the feeling that this is one of those games that I would love playing in an actual arcade, but falls a little flat when you play at home for more than half an hour. Still, looks to be a good port and glad to see more of this stuff!
