Looks Like PS5 Is Going to Clean Up This Black Friday

We all know the catalyst that will push the most people from the PS4 will be the release of GTA6.

700 Xbox consoles sold.

That's the real story here.

The gap is massive. Must be close to PS5 selling 3 to every Xbox series console 1 at least by now?

God, I can't imagine how bad the sales numbers for the next Xbox are going to be. I don't think they'll even bother with some markets, maybe leave some altogether.

What would impressive numers be? If the Next Xbox is $1000 or more?

700 a week at $500-600 each is sad. 700 a week at a MSRP of $1000? Would that be impressive?

@11001100110zero Well with the gabecube maybe costing $900 + I'm sure MS will look at that when it comes to releasing their PC Hybrid and with the price spike for RAM, it will be an interesting release that's for sure.

@themightyant To be honest, I think you could be right and also that would be the best thing to do if you are looking to up grade. Either way considering people try to bash this gen I think the numbers speak for themselves.

@Gunbeld that's bad. I was trying to be conservative with my guestimates. Being outsold 3 to 1 in your best market sums it up.

That's 2 generations in a row now that Xbox has massively been outsold by it's most like for like competitor.

I was one of those tempted by sub £300 prices. It might be the cheapest playstation I have ever bought in real terms, never mind inflation. PS1 and PS2 were both around £300. PS3 slim was somewhat over £300. I think my PS4pro was more like £400. PS5 at £290 looks a great deal.

Sony just have to be a little bit careful not to end up being seen as - "don't buy, just wait for one of their over the top sales".

Could they drop their RRP when not on sale, but not have as big a reduction on sale?

Or, are they keeping the RRP high to (1) reduce price increases when they are eventually affected by RAM prices, and (2) reduce massive sticker shock when PS6 price is announced.

This is interesting as lifetime sales of the PS4 and Switch in Spain were much closer than other European countries(except France I believe).

Not sure how accurate it is but I read the PS4 sold 3.9m in Spain and the Switch 3.5m.

The Switch 2 was also discounted by €50 euros for the base model and the MK bundle. However, Nintendo consoles tend to skew more towards December sales than Black Friday.

Well it worked for me! I finally bought the Ghost of Yotei gold PS5, with Astro Bot, Expedition 33, and Final Fantasy VI for a cool £454 in total.

Yeah I'll just wait for the PS6 version of GTA6 myself since I got a PS5 and not a PS5 Pro. Sony has been super aggressive on their pricing this end of the year. I have a gut feeling PS6 will be announced mid to late next year with a 2027 release.

Xbox 700 units Christ sake

This just in, 5 year old hardware on steep discount (relative to it's recently raised prices so it's not much of a discount) is outselling 6 month old hardware with no discount and 5 year old hardware that keeps going up in price with no discount.

@Haruki_NLI The Switch 2 was reduced by 50 euros in Spain according to the source of these charts.

Edit: Looks like it wasn't an official sale but retailers taking a 50 euro hit on their own profit margin. Probably quite indicative of the Switch 2 underperforming in the country, which was a very strong country for the Switch.

The best buy unless you are going Pro is the black Ghost Of Yotei slim discounted on Playstation Direct, an absolute beaut. Not so much the runny stuff alternative model mind!

@matikp wow didn’t realise about Very Pay…I’m tempted by the PS5 Pro as they are selling it for £569, if you get 20% discount on that it would be £455 and music magpie with give me £275 for my digital PS5 meaning I would only be paying £180 to upgrade to the Pro…hmm

Edit: Actually my bad music Magpie will pay £275 for disc edition, £245 for digital.
Still works out at £210 to upgrade, which is the cheapest it’s been.

@themightyant Lol you really think GTA6 would be out and people would have the patience to wait a couple of years again for a nextgen version...folk can't even handle fomo for less popular games...when they don't even know if they can afford a PS6 when they haven't even got a PS5. They'll get the PS5 version first and double dip later if they have to.

Why are people so obsessed with how many consoles Microsoft sells? We know they don't care about consoles anymore, move on already lol. With the PS5, it's very much on sale every 2-3 months at a loss just so they can push those sales numbers. If you miss one for black Friday, it will be £300 again by February.

@Rich33 We're over five years into the generation, most people would opine this is what the console should cost as standard by now anyways.

This also feels like a push before the next (sigh) price increase due to the RAM shortages. And once GTA6 hits it will cause a serious upswing in console sales.

Remember: Sony are evil for offering a console and games that people actually want and dominating in marketing and sales. This will be the narrative soon enough as Xbox looks to blame anyone but themselves for their continued gaming division collapse

@SeaDaVie There's €40 off the Mario Kart World Switch 2 bundle here in Ireland too right now (at Smyths at least - they're basically the only real gaming outlet left here).

Having worked in GameStop many moons ago, and prone to mooching about secondhand shops/CeX looking at games, I'd be fairly confident in saying Nintendo usually does good business here too.

Outselling Xbox 58 to 1 is ridiculous, doesn't really matter what they do next gen does it.

In Japan, the price cut for PS5 digital boosted the console at 23K units. But PS5 Pro sold at 11K units better than PS5 disc sold at 2K units.

Turkiye is full of unsold "PS5" and "PS5Pro" units.
Spain can easily demand that dust collecting units right away. Because nobody has that kind of purchasing power in Turkiye, anymore. Well... This (sad) situation It is not even something new. Unfortunately it is the case since (at least) 2017 (meaning: even years before the PS5 released)

@darylb24 This! The obsession with my box wins is so childish. We all know MS is now 3rd part publisher. Who cares at this point.

I wonder what good deals they’ll have for the Pro. I may be interested in buying one as I move away from PC and back to consoles as my main platform. I’ll lost all interest in PCs due to my day job, and with the Steam Frame… I can get my vr fix that way.

I doubt we will ever see that sort of price reduction over the course of a generation again.

I'm not convinced GTA6 is going to make a big impact on console sales any more.
PS5 is tracking more or less level with PS4 now, and with GTA6 likely launching so late in the generation I think all those that would care will likely already have PS5"s by the time it comes out. You might see a small surge for a week, but little more.

I did think it would cause a larger surge in Pro consoles, but again, I just think it will be too late in the generation, with PS6 only a year or 2 away by the time it launches (I still believe 2028 for PS6 is more realistic).

I'm sure I read that Pro is also around £/$100 off at the moment.
If you have PS Plus I would check out the PS Direct store if you have it in your country as I also seem to remember you may get a 5% discount from them on top.

They’re going to sell a lot of units. It’s a great price given the market conditions and the only console with a traditional Black Friday deal.
I’ve had to resist the urge to get one even though I rarely use my PS4 these days…

@Rich33 It's goodbye to cheap consoles, sadly. Sure a buddy had his launch Series X fail there, hasn't been keeping up with what's happening in the industry and was shocked when he popped in to buy a replacement.

You make a good point about GTA and where we are regarding the generation. I would love to know how many monthly PSN users are still just on PS4. And if they're long-term holdouts who saw the protracted cross gen period and figure similar will happen with the PS6, so a PS5 this late in the gen makes sense.

@Gunbeld I mean those numbers is Spain are over 50:1. So 10:1 is probably way to generous. I dont even think the 3:1 US and UK holds weight anymore. Xbox has literally fallen off a cliff.

I bet he was horrified at how much series X is retailing for now.

The lack of permanent price reductions does make me wonder if those PS4 "long term holdouts" will just decide to skip PS5 and buy a PS6 when it launches, or if they think PS6 is too expensive (I'm still sure we are looking at £650-700), will buy a PS5 at that point in time, as I'm sure it will drop a lot in price once PS6 is announced (if not new, then certainly used).

This is part of my thoughts around GTA6 not making a massive impact on console hardware sales now it is so late - and I bet Sony were not pleased to hear of the delays.

My personal view is that cross gen will be here even longer next gen, particularly if Sony have more difficulty selling the PS6 than the PS5 (which will be magnified if it isn't powerful enough to convince PS5 owners to upgrade).

For me it's not a good enough price and every time a discount is mentioned I get bombarded by people saying to get one. I refuse to get one, it's not reverse psychology or FOMO or new product shininess or their experiences that don't reflect mine but mine might as well be non-existent as it's meaningless. I hate the console, it's peripherals, I hate current game design and never wanted one. But some people are too stupid. I have 3 PS5s around me, I don't use them. I don't care to use them.

a lot of bad faith actors in these comments, pretending to be shocked about xbox sales when we all know damn well gaming was it its best when $ony had competition (PS2, PS3, anyone?).

@Rich33 Horrified for sure, so much so that he's dropped the Xbox and will stick with his PS5.

I'm full sure the next cross-gen period will be there for keeps. I usually buy PlayStations within the first year (Vita, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5 were all at launch), and given how this gen has played out, I've currently got no interest in PS6 at all.

Their games have become too repetitive, and I miss the days of more "gamey" games too.

Now if there was a new WipEout on day one I'd be there with bells on, but that ain't happening.
