Update #3 []: Approximately 24 hours after an AWS outage caused chaos around the globe, you should find your games are working as intended again now.
While the PSN remained relatively sturdy throughout, many players did report hiccups beginning early morning on 20th October.
Worse, the outage struck dozens of individual games, including Gran Turismo 7, Genshin Impact, and several Ubisoft releases.
You should find the issues mostly resolved at this point, but this is a cautionary reminder of our overreliance on online services, and what can happen when they go down.

Update #2 []: While many services affected by the AWS outage are beginning to recover, others are still impacted.
Some of Ubisoft’s servers have been struck, rendering some games or features from the French publisher wobbly. That includes titles like The Division 2 and Rainbow Six Siege.
There’s been a steady increase of users reporting issues with the PSN again as well, even though Sony’s status page is still reporting everything is okay.
It looks like the disruption is probably going to continue for a good few hours now, and while your mileage may ultimately vary, do keep in mind you may have problems with your favourite games due to this.
Update #1 []: The AWS outage is beginning to improve and fewer people are reporting issues with the PSN specifically.
Gran Turismo 7 was also a game that was impacted by the outages, but will hopefully recover imminently.
So all should be well in a few hours, although our continued reliance on these servers has once again been brought into sharp focus.
Original Story: If you’re having issues connecting to PSN right now, you’re not alone.
An Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage is currently impacting dozens upon dozens of online systems, including Sony’s gaming network.
While we’re currently connected, the service does seem shaky in our neck of the woods. DownDetector shows a significant increase in outage reports over the past two hours.
PlayStation’s own network tracker is not currently flagging any issues, but beyond the platform itself, individual games like Fortnite and Roblox are also struggling.
We’d expect a global outage as widespread and damaging as this to be resolved relatively quickly, and as mentioned earlier in the article, your mileage may vary.
This one goes beyond just PSN, though – banking apps, social networks, and communication hubs are all affected.
You may just have to take a trip to the Winchester and ride this one out, folks.

Have Crowdstrike released another up-date?
Just my luck. I unboxed a game after it was tucked away for more than a year and when I tried to play it, it said the servers were down. Well I guess I'll be patient and wait for the AWS outage to get fixed so I can play a round of Concord.
@Oram77 Hahahah, I hope so. The stock will crash and it will be a good time to buy
Bezos on the sherry?
"Now Sony need to do the same for Gran Turismo 7 with its nonsense online requirement"
I literally said this on here a few days ago about GT7 and now it's unplayable, so I've been playing MSR on my Dreamcast instead as that works perfectly fine
Love the Shaun of the Dead reference in the article! 😁

Looks like I won’t be going on my Portal at lunch today
@McSavage I love digital. The only thing that bothers me is the digital license which is also prevalent on discs to prove you own the game. If online services go down and you don't have the game on the disc installed, then you will still run into the problem of not being able to play it. Sony need to remove this for all games in my opinion.
@McSavage playing on my Xbox Series X but it could just as well be playing on a pc too.
It's good to keep your options open for situations like this. It's called not putting all your eggs in one basket 👍
@McSavage I have several digital games already downloaded so I will just play those. I only play single player anyway. This only affects me if I want to download a game right at this moment but as I mentioned, I already have several
@Czar_Khastik 👏👏👏 I like this one.
At least it didn’t affect the Arc Raiders server slam!
The most common cause is a cleaning lady unplugging entire server bays because she couldn't find a socket for the vacuum cleaner.
Amazon should really invest in battery powered cleaning equipment.
Me quietly hoping this won't affect my wordle streak....

@Rhaoulos I would say that's absurdly unlikely, but this is Amazon we're talking about.

@RiverGenie
Or maybe crack open a book, or do something outdoors.
Having an offline video game console just in case Internet services go down for a few hours is dark stuff. Humanity is doomed isn't it
@Anthony_Daniels according to my kindle stats I average 43 books a year. I also average 2.2 miles walking per day according to Google fit thanks to my doctor nagging me um advising me to do so. I sometimes sleep too 😉
@McSavage I personally have never seen this group of gamers that want to kill off physical media, there are certainly none around here. I don't think even Steam users would be in favour of that.
You came in here and took a jab at people who prefer to buy digital and can't install their games during an outage (even though you wouldn't be able to properly install most physical games during an outage either). And someone jabbed back. You'll live.
@McSavage Your comment, combined with the slow head-turn of the zombie in your PFP, is the perfect level of sass and cracked me up.
Focus on A.i and always online, The Terminator and stuff like this just shows how the rich will blindly follow money no matter how many warning signs are right in front of your face🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🙄🙄🙄🙄😵💫😵💫😵💫
Ooooh the human race, they use to exist 😵😵😵👀
This outage had a mild effect on my job and I can't take my mid term today cuz of it. Joy
Fortnite, Roblox and a racing game that could have been made to be played offline but instead got shoehorned into the ‘always online’ category? I say leave the outage be.
You'd think after the Sony hack they would have better online services. When will you learn Sony.
@Mythologue Now is a good time to say you're joking and you didn't think I was serious.
Welcome to the all digital future
Outside has a respectable resolution and decent frames per second, if anyone needs something to do during the outage.
Does everything seem to use Amazon Web Service then?
Kinda crazy how many services use AWS.
This is what happens when you depend on just a few services to keep up the bulk of the Internet.
@Czar_Khastik Probably your best one yet
@Nakatomi_Uk Yup. We basically control 30%+ of the global cloud infrastructure market which is a majority share..
@Czar_Khastik that might be the first good chuckle I’ve had from these comment sections!
@Rhaoulos You seemed pretty serious to me.
@McSavage Playing games
@Frmknst it wasn't just games businesses and hospital stopped functioning as well this service isn't just online connectivity for games it services nearly half the planet
@Frmknst That's the scary thing about this generation. Mobiles and always online is the only way they communicate. Once that goes down, they just don't know how to exist 🤣
Done the 10 lap weekly race on GT7 the other night just to lose connection after I crossed the finish line and didn't receive the 500,000 ticket or the race winning. I was pi*'ed to say the least lol. Of course I did it again tho. All my ring doorbells and cameras were having issues tho until the following morning.
Glad I didn't buy GT7 then as I'd been eying it recently. XD Says a lot about server based DRM it won't always work, but these companies don't have better solutions it seems to avoid that, singleplayer or multiplayer. GT PSP memory card save file DRM to server DRM they still can't make it better.
Glad I have plenty of other consoles to use and play singleplayer games with no networking at all. I played GT3 on PS2, then Sakura Dungeon on Switch 1, Forza Motorsport 3/4 on 360, I have plenty of a back log.
I had better things to do. That and my PS4 messes up from time to time. But still works.
@carlos82 MSR on Dreamcast is absolutely incredible, the graphics still hold up pretty well today.
