In Ghost of Yotei, protagonist Atsu will apparently be joined on her quest for revenge by several like-minded companions β but one ally in particular has had all of the attention so far.
As shown in multiple gameplay videos up until now, a mysterious wolf can aid Atsu in combat, but this wild canine isn't just some basic buddy who'll team up with you for a mission or two.
According to a new social media post from PlayStation, you actually have more agency over the wolf than most onlookers realise. While you can't control the beast directly, you can apparently forge a bond with it over the course of your adventure, causing it to appear by Atsu's side more frequently.

So, it seems as though the wolf starts out as a curious ally β we assume that you cross paths with it at some point in the story β but if you want it to truly have your back, you'll need to prove your worth.
"At first, the wolf roams freely," developer Sucker Punch explains, and there's only a "chance" that it'll lend you its ferocity when sh*t hits the fan.
However, by "discovering wolf dens and rescuing caged wolves", you'll deepen your bond with the wolf, and gain points that can then be spent on a specific wolf-related skill tree.
"Unlocks increase the chances of the wolf fighting by your side in addition to a variety of other skills," it continues.
The wolf dens and caged wolves are almost certainly open world activities β the latter likely to be found within enemy camps β so we're just hoping that gaining the wolf's trust doesn't feel like too much of a grind.
Still, the idea of the wolf just showing up out of nowhere to help you is pretty cool, especially if the system's as dynamic as it sounds.
