Sony has shared that it's raising the prices of the base PS5, base PS5 Digital Edition, and the PS5 Pro in the USA. Going into effect tomorrow, 21st August, the increased prices are as follows:
- PS5
- $549.99 ($50 increase)
- PS5 Digital Edition
- $499.99 ($50 increase)
- PS5 Pro
- $749.99 ($50 increase)
Sony vice president Isabelle Tomatis said the following: "Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21."
This is only the latest PS5 console price rise, as other territories such as the UK and Europe have seen the cost go up in recent months. Back in May, hardware manufacturer Sony said it was considering more PS5 system price increases. It has now followed through with one for the USA.
Sony CFO Lin Tao said it would be investigating a method of "passing on" tariffs, implemented by USA president Donald Trump, to the consumer. There was also the consideration of manufacturing PS5 consoles within the USA.
The prices of PS5 accessories aren't affected in this business update. "We have no other price changes to announce for additional markets," concluded Tomatis.

I think we all knew this was coming at some point seeing the way things are in the US and the fact it had happened elsewhere already.
Well you know who to thank for that....
Good luck to all those still hoping ps6 will cost under $700 or equivalent.
Ouch. Not too surprised, though. My company has raised prices three times since April.
Even the Pro…
Based on the latest price increases, I‘m not surprised by the very high sales numbers for Switch 2. While in the past you could expect a discount a few years after release, now you must expect a price increase.
The best strategy now is to buy hardware day one. And even for software, heavy discounts for popular games aren’t a given anymore.
Are we all tired of winning yet?
100% related to the tariffs that are raising taxes in the USA.
Phew...
Glad I have bought PS5 Fat model in June 2024 before too late.

Just wow! I can't believe this gen at all. I'm glad I had a chance to sell my PS5 og to a friend and bought PS5P not too further away from release.
Remember the good old days when consoles used to come down in price after a few years of being on the market?
We didn't know how good we had it.
I'm sorry but these increases are absolute madness IMO
The maddest one of all is Nintendo deciding to hike up the price of their 8 year old OG Switch.
I'll say it again..... it's absolute madness...... stop the world please..... I want to get off
It's good for the Americans to have to start feeling the pain of some of their choices, it just sucks for the 50.2% that didn't vote for him(and the under 18's, ineligible to vote etc.)
@Vovander Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead says he has reliable sources indicating that the PS6 will actually be cheaper than we all think. Maybe like a $500-$600 console.
Should have been done well before raising the price in countries that aren't America.
$750 for the pro is a big oof. I am lucky I got my PS5 on a £100 discount during a summer sale.
As an American, I can confirm neither my state nor myself personally has yet to see any benefit from these asinine tariffs. Which might be surprising if literally anyone that bothered to research this didn't spend all of last year telling half of America this would happen.
This price increase isn't as bad as the Xbox price hikes earlier this year, but it's still bad. On the one hand, the PS5 is still $50 cheaper than the Xbox Series X/S, but on the other hand, the $380 Series S is a somewhat more attractive deal now compared to the $500 PS5 Digital Edition.
@Member_the_game Well it has been as very unusual generation. Kicked off in the middle of a devastating pandemic, followed by a years long war on the border of Europe and now a global trade war declared by the world's largest economy. You might call those price increases madness, but we're living in an even madder world at the moment.
I'm surprised they held on for this long, but yeah everything is increasing and many of us peasants will be the ones to feel the pain 🙁
@Vovander
We (US) will probably have a different president by the time the PS6 is released.
@QBertFarnsworth 😁
Pre tariff stock now gone then.
@Lowdefal That's understandable. Which is another reason it's a shame that Sony/Playstation isn't a Japanese business anymore.
Either way, since Americans voted for Trump and his tariffs, it is definitely the morally right thing that they suffer the increased prices
Is anyone still in denial about why these prices are going up?
Some sensible comments here and im not being sarcastic.
Reddit many say just Sony greedy but we fully know its to do with tariffs.
@wildcat_kickz PS6 must be more powerful than PS5Pro. I can’t see how PS6 can be priced cheaper than PS5Pro, and the range you gave will required $150-250 (20-33%) price cut on Pro when 6 is released. Looks remote to me.
@Don if the release is delayed till 2029 - maybe)
@Don That's a big assumption considering if they even allow us to vote again. We are no longer a democracy.
@Vovander I mean the way Sony has supported the ps5 this gen, I don't fully compelled to even upgrade anymore since I don't think they will improve their first party frequency and it probably will be cross gen for 5 years minimum when PS6 releases.
Someones gotta pay for the green dream, the lovely newcomers and the wars I dont care about. Btw Im not an American. This is whats upping prices in my country!
Getting bad news out in advance of the state of play next month is see lol
@SodaPop6548 more like just an excuse, since they've been raising the prices every where already
@Vovander I'm going off of a reliable tech analyst and leaker. I don't pretend to know the ins and outs, but I'd wager he knows more than either of us.
@SeaDaVie I think your math is off he won the popular vote.
@SeaDaVie honestly, it does suck, but I'm ok with it. This may finally break the cultist spell the orange one has on our country. Sometimes, you get exactly what you pay for
@Ultimapunch Ooh! Sooo...so many.

@Americansamurai1 The current american government gave them a reason. Otherwise they wouldn't have raised the prices. This is happening to more than just video games. Everything, even food, is more expensive because of the unintelligent people in the US.
@RoomWithaMoose I second this. Also an American who has yet to see anything other than increased prices as a result of these glorious and perfect tariffs.....
@Vovander
Or if he is impeached - theres always some hope!
About time tbh.
@Americansamurai1 Harris + 3rd-parties = 50.2%.
Their math isn't wrong, you're just presumptuous and ignorant.
Surly there cant still be people over there who believe that tariffs aren't the reason prices have gone up on almost everything.
@Americansamurai1 He got 49.8% of the vote unless the MSM is lying to me to hide how he had the greatest win in history, a beautiful win. People couldn't believe you could win by this much.
@Americansamurai1 Depends on your definition. He won the popular vote by 3million or so, but didnt achieve 50%, so not the majority.
Id be confused by the numbers if I didnt live in the south where almost a year later people still run around with flags on their old pickups.
Well, it was a good no-price-increase-in-the-US run while it lasted!
They held out valiantly, longer than others, but the writing was on the wall sadly.
They can thank their chosen leader - it's all going exactly as well as he promised, for... everyone...
Should have been more imo. Americans need to be taught just how stupid they were to allow such a maniac to gain power and a sharp rise in price of entertainment products is sadly a strong way of informing them.
The annals of time will undoubtedly laugh at them but they deserve to feel it themselves too.
@Runex2121 yeah but it it's still the majority since it was more than just two candidates that made up the 100%.
@SeaDaVie still a majority of the total votes. Gotta remember there were more than just 2 candidates.
@RoomWithaMoose it is cause that 50.2 % is more than just one person so he still got the majority
@SodaPop6548 it's happening in other countries too though not just America prices are skyrocketing everywhere.

@Vovander
My understanding is Sony usually sell the launch console at a loss to keep the price low. I also remember Sony discontinued the ps4 pro once the ps5 launched and just continued to sell the standard ps4, although I could be wrong about that. So perhaps the ps5 pro will get discontinued once the ps6 is released. However they would still support the ps5 pro but would just not be available to buy anymore.
@wildcat_kickz
They may desire it to be priced less, but can they predict the market by then? I rate this rumour as... "wishful thinking."
This pretty much ends my slight interest in getting a PS5 Pro. If I didn't pull the trigger last year when the had some sales going on, it's not worth it now.
This will obviously happen here in the UK too as the woman who runs our economy hasn't a clue. Global Good times not.
@Ainu20
I hear what you're saying but it still doesn't sit right with me if I'm honest.
I think a lot of it comes down to greed and they're putting prices up.... not because they have to but because they know they can get away with it and people will still pay it.
I'm just in a fortunate position where it doesn't effect me as such (unless my PS5 or Switch 2 break and I need to purchase a new ones of course)
99 times out of 100 I am usually a day one adopter of new consoles, this generation in particular it's turned out to be a very wise move
Not a huge fan of the man, but I find it interesting that non-Americans (and Americans on here) are blaming all the price increases in their country and US on him. Europe has had rampant inflation for the past two to three years and the US felt that too before him. The price of major food items went up by 50 to 60% in the US before him. Not saying this will not change with these tariffs, but prices on core food items and energy are down since he went into office, so many Americans may feel okay right now and are okay with their Playstation or toys costing more (they will just buy less of them) as long as eggs and fuel are down 30 to 50%. Of course, this changes quickly when prices on these food and core items and everything else goes up due to tariffs. But just giving a little insight into the dynamics when ignoring politics. Not defending him or tariffs by the way.
Well, I'm in a different region but any price hike will agitate my humble brag muscle that is latched on to the fact that I got my PS5 Pro at an insane discount due to it being a demo model for a large electronic company. It is the only investment I have made and it is most certainly going to be sold at a higher price point 2-5 years from now.

@Runex2121 @RoomWithaMoose
Im from the UK, and I just feel bad for the 50% of Americans, and anyone else worldwide affected, who didn't ask for this.
@Americansamurai1 What the heck is it that republicans in the US have done that has made it so people defend them so much? I do not get it. The only thing that has happened in the last 6 months is life has gotten worse for anyone who isn't a billionaire.
Honestly it was more surprising that it took this long and they raised it before everywhere else but the US.
And remember, it can always get worse, it’s only been 7 months out of 48.
Yeah, knew this was going to happen.
@RoomWithaMoose tariffs doesnt have any shor term influence for good outcome. Tariffs are long term game, where in short term you pay for everything more whatever is tariffs on
I call ***** on that.sony is just being greedy.no need for that increase. Wtf.word up son
I remember commenters telling us that tariffs wouldn't lead to price increases. It just sucks the whole globe is being dragged down along with the US
@Vovander still think it'll be under 600 personally. Suicide to be over 700.
@REALAIS Well that's the beautiful thing. In the long-term, we're giving China a grand opportunity to become a global economic force as we encourage our closest economic allies to distance themselves from us, we're adding to the debt/housing crisis by making basic products more expensive, and my state still won't see any benefit because any possible 'American-made' factories that might come out of this will certainly be made in other states (possibly ones where corporations can easily funnel legal immigrants to work them for less pay while threatening deportation if they don't play ball).
@UltimateOtaku91 Yep Hiroki Titoki!
My current government, which I voted in opposition of, is absurd, and this is just another example. Prices rising and economic turmoil for nothing but stupid reasons.
I knew I should have gotten a second PS5 while I had the lower priced chance-I just waited too long. My launch PS5 isn’t going to last forever.
@LiamCroft you sure have a lot of comments in your price increase article that are not very favorable to my country.
Bought my PS5 at the beginning of the year in anticipation of this. I'm surprised it took this long and actually started to think Sony had just figured out a price that would withstand the tariffs, but I'm not at all thrown to find I was wrong.
I've been waiting on the Switch 2 because I figured it already had tariffs worked into its mid-year release price and I'm trying to save money, but maybe I should grab it sooner rather than later.
Right, because they haven’t made anything cheaper in the years it’s been out. This is just greed.
@Hxcaleb Lol atleast spell his name right 😂
And Playstation still doesn't have the exclusive it once have.games are getting and cancel.and Sony have increased the prices.this have been Playstation worst console generation ever.word up son
This is unfortunate and i fear this will affect PS5 game prices too.
@zeppray57 I wonder why...
@PuppetMaster
You can bet a nickel on that!
Random American Price Elevation due to the elected Random American President, Is So Tough... for consumers.
but i suppose it is to be expected 🤔🤔
@kmtrain83 @Vovander I'd encourage you guys to check out Tom's reporting. He could certainly be wrong or things may change, but he has sources within AMD, NVIDIA, Sony, Microsoft, etc. and he has been incredibly reliable and knowledgeable about stuff like this before (see his reporting on PS5 Pro before it was revealed).
He points to reduced costs of internal tech, better cooling (smaller fan components), smaller silicon dies, better use of PSSR, etc., as well as Sony's desire to make a more affordable unit this time around, similar to the transition from PS3 to PS4, where PS4 was much cheaper at launch, though much more powerful.
I get that the current economic situation is different than 2013, but there's much more than tariffs and inflation to drive the cost of electronics.
It's Occam's Razor folks. No tariffs, Sony does no price increase. Yes tariffs, Sony does do a price increase. Sugar coat it anyway you want. It really is that simple.
OK I will check out this Tom's guy. I'm skeptical that newer tech will be cheaper than older tech though. Usually it is the other way around. I guess we see something like that with Macbook Air those have lowered their base price, or at least not gone up much with inflation.
@playstation1995 Kinda agree with you man, word up son.
Did some research and inflation is at 2.63% an all time low for the last 5 years that the ps5 has been available also tariffs have stabilized at 54% down from 125% so y a price increase cuz there greedy
US citizens getting what they wanted. Most videogame nerds are conservative people, so good for them.
For others that did not wish for all this fascist nonsense, I'm sorry for you, hang in there.
Price increase for a five year old console. Nice.
Who would have guessed the cheapest time to buy a PS5 would have been at launch lol
So using the tariffs as excuse to jack up prices. Greed just cost them 2 sales from me.
this comment section is going exactly how i thought it would lol. i'm surprised its still open.
I say raise game prices next an PS Plus too. Really show the greed an blame Trump.
I’d love it if Push Square would follow Nintendo Life’s example and just…disable comments on articles like this.
@twitchtvpat Yeah, I’m completely unsurprised.
@twitchtvpat comment section is going completely fine actually.

Switch 2 launch price doesn't seem so bad now. The orange tax strikes again
@UltimateOtaku91 sleepy joe's done it again 😤
@Romans12 Businesses are literally leaving the US because of the tariffs. Try again. "I love the poorly educated." -Donald J. Trump
@zeppray57 gee, I wonder why that is?
@Jey887 No. I need some more instances of leopards ate my face!
I ordered a PS5 Pro today. I was going to hold off for a sale but doesn't look good on that front. I only bit because my credit card company offered me 16% back in rewards for purchasing at Walmart. That's basically $112 off the price. I don't get it back in cash, but I can get eBay or one of many other gift cards with a $112 balance that I can then either use myself or sell. I'll also be selling my og disc PS5 with DarkPlates to recoup more of the cost for the Pro.
I bit the bullet and picked up a used PS5 Pro a few weeks ago, and this makes me glad I didn't wait any longer.
I actually wish I'd done it when they were on sale for $50 off this spring or early summer, but glad I didn't wait any longer.
@Jettstyles completely agree, as a European I've been seeing these price increases across the board post pandemic. The free money given out during that time has caused the rampant inflation we are living with now. But ya, orange man bad, tariffs are the cause, sure
How terrible has gaming gotten since the ps3 was last supported? PS4 was rough and the PS5 era is just embarrassing. I don't even look forward to the PS6 greed and nickel and diming. No wonder more and more local retro game shops are packed with people.
Expect PS6 to be close to £800-1000 buy the time it releases and I don't expect it to have a generational leap in graphics either

The word you're looking for is "plurality" - that is, "more than any other" and implies less than a majority. That is different from "majority" which means "more than half."
And that whole discussion is idiotic because the US doesn't elect our President on popular vote, anyway, so the difference between majority and plurality is irrelevant.

These political comments are funny as hell. Everyone is blaming the tariffs but no one is concerned about how the mega corporation with record profits year after year decides to “pass them on to the consumer”.
@Phelaidar I think you need to look up the definition of fascist again my dude
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah Trump.
@Psofo Everyone is blaming Trump its not that hard why should they taken the hit? Trump is the problem nor any company that gets hit by the Tarifs.
Removed - unconstructive
@Blaze215 It is Trump is a a disaster however you look at it. And yes if you put Tarifs on goods the customer is screwed.
@playstation1995 The Americans deserve it for voting this maniac in office twice.
@Psofo Well, when a defense of the tariffs was that, certainly, companies would take the brunt of the expenses, I think it's still important to call attention to the tariffs first and foremost.
@beltmenot https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=fascism+definition+ here, my dude.
@Americansamurai1 Only a absolute insane person would take Trump over anything.
@Jammer Not strictly true. She knows what she should do, but has been scared off of it for.... Reasons....? No, wait. Party donors. Yeah, that's likely it. F*cking spineless bunch of bankers...
@dskatter Why i love to see who voted for Trump.😂
@Phelaidar Yeah im not playing this game
