Praise, Raiden! Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection Adds Mythologies, Special Forces 1

As expected, following recent comments, there’ll be no PS2 era Mortal Kombat games included on Digital Eclipse’s highly anticipated compilation, Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection.

There will, however, be Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.

What’s important about these two titles is neither is a fighting game in the traditional sense.

MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, originally released on the PS1 in 1997, is more of a side-scroller – although it does take some of the gameplay systems from the franchise it’s inspired by. It’s widely considered one of the worst Mortal Kombat games ever made. There was also an N64 version, but we’d expect the PS1 edition to be offered in this compilation.

2000’s MK: Special Forces is also a bit of an odd-ball, putting you in control of Jax in a kind of third-person brawler-style environment. Personally, we think this one has aged a little better, but it’s still practically primitive from a modern perspective.

While the two titles haven’t been officially announced for the compilation yet, off-screen footage from Atari’s booth at Gamescom confirms it.

The only real outlier now, assuming Digital Eclipse really isn’t going to add the PS2 titles, is MK Gold, which was effectively a revision of Mortal Kombat 4 released for the Dreamcast in 1999. It got panned at the time, but it didn’t help that it was forced to go toe-to-toe with Namco’s jaw-dropping SoulCalibur, which was a battle it was never ever going to win.

Just to recap, then, here’s the full lineup so far:

  • Mortal Kombat – 1992: Arcade, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear
