It's well documented how Hell Is Us foregoes player handholding in an effort to create a more immersive, rewarding experience — and that philosophy extends to its big, mysterious dungeons.

You can get a look for yourself in the game's latest trailer, which shows off some of these areas, each one filled with varying levels of puzzles and combat challenges.

The dungeons echo the rest of the game's unusual aesthetic, which combines a contemporary-looking setting with fantastical, surreal elements.

And, as mentioned, you'll have to work out a dungeon's puzzles and mysteries yourself, using the information available to you. Developer Rogue Factor is hopeful this approach will make for a more memorable and meaningful experience.

There's a little more detail on the PS Blog, where creative and art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête discusses the dungeons and enemy encounters.

He says each dungeon has a specific theme and emotion they relate to, which ties into the lore behind their existence. Jacques-Belletête adds the team wanted to contrast the dungeons against the modern setting by exploring otherworldly fantasy.

Some of the dungeons have a lot more puzzles than others, some are more about combat, and some have a lot of environmental changes, like the one in the trailer where you have to play with the water levels and things like that. So they’re all different and tied to lore, which you sometimes need to understand in order to solve a puzzle. One of our themes is ‘history always repeats itself’, and even though you figure out these artefacts from ages ago, you realize that it relates to what’s going on right now. There’s lots to discover and play around with.
