Update #2 []: Square Enix has now confirmed a PS5 version of Octopath Traveler 0 is in the works alongside Nintendo Switch 2. It's coming out on 4th December 2025.
There'll also be a PS4 version. The new RPG is available to pre-order now on the PS Store, costing £49.99 / $49.99. Here is the official blurb from the publisher:
"Octopath Traveler 0 is a standalone adventure set in the world of Orsterra — some years before the events of the first Octopath Traveler game. For the first time in the series, you create your own customisable protagonist and set off on an adventure to apprehend those who destroyed your beloved hometown — and rebuild it in the process."

Update #1 []: The latest Nintendo Direct did indeed conclude with the announcement of Octopath Traveler 0, but at the time of writing, 3pm BST, there's no confirmation of a PS5 version just yet. We'll update this article should more information be released. For now, you can catch the reveal trailer above.
Original Story: A new entry in the Octopath Traveler series will be announced during today's Nintendo Direct, it's been claimed. If it's not, then the reveal is apparently "imminent".
Via a Delabs report from reliable leaker Billbil-Kun, the next RPG will be called Octopath Traveler 0, suggesting that it's a prequel to the current two games. Their "latest discoveries" suggest it's coming to PS5, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Elsewhere in the article, it's claimed the Nintendo Direct will also play host to the announcements of a new SpongeBob SquarePants game, the leaked Plants vs Zombies Replanted remaster, and more.
The Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase begins in under three hours, so we'll know whether a new Octopath Traveler title is in the works or not imminently. Would you be interested in a prequel to the two main games? Let us know in the comments below.

Man I still didn't touch the first two, they're churning these out. Excited to see the trailer, though!
Somewhat surprising because, if I recall correctly, the second game did significantly worse than the first game, despite being better.
@SeaDaVie And also on everything.
But that's the oddity. It's like SMTv. It did 1m on Switch, and then Vengeance added another 1m.....across Switch, PC, Xbox and PS.
But man, they need to cool it with the HD-2D stuff. I can only take so much default UE4 blur.
I think we'll see some PlayStation ports too, maybe helldivers 2, spiderman, or horizon zero dawn.
I played the first one but found it got really boring towards the end of the game as the gameplay got very stale. The concept of enemies being staggered if you used specific weapon types and elements was novel, but Its just got annoying after a few hours. The end game content also did nothing for me as it essentially required you to make pretty specific builds to meet the damage requirements. I think I would have been okay with it if the game had been 20hrs long but for an 80hr game the gameplay did not hold up at all.
So when people say Square Enix don't do turned based combat anymore, I will always point to these games, the second game in particular is a master piece imo.
@Lowdefal I forgot about DQ!! (shame on me).
I said in a different article that I really do think the future for the FF franchise is to stick with Rebirth's combat, as it one of the best battle systems ever made, I would also add with some tweaks they could make it like FF13's combat.
Great if true! I loved both games, II somewhat more, so I got all the achievements and collectibles. II has some wonderful quality of life additions.
I owned the second game and played it for like 25-30 hours until i lost my save files because my HDD got broken 😔 . Since then, i didn't touch the game again.
But it's a pretty solid JRPG with good characters, beautiful 2.5 HD graphic & music, solid VA, and quite standard turn based combat. Although, i don't know if i would buy the sequel...
Still waiting on that physical copy for the first game…
I hope this is true, but I would've preferred a new Triangle Strategy instead.
I wasn’t going to watch the direct but now I am 😂
@Mathieu_B they’re made by two completely different teams, they just share the same producer. So triangle strategy 2 could still be in the works. I know they were hard at work making a vr version for meta quest (which is now released)
Well I absolutely LOVE Octopath 2 so as long as this plays like the 2nd game I'm in. But Prequel games don't really excite me.
Yeah there's a new Octopath called Octopath Traveler 0. Not sure if it's also come for PS5 or Switch 2 exclusives.
Here after the Nintendo Direct, I've got to say Ocotopath 0 looks just like 2 but everything if cranked up to 11, will wish list when it's possible to do so.
@Oram77 they didn't make this team asano did square just published it BIG DIFFERENCE
@Lowdefal this is also a misconception when square acquired enix they had in contract to never mess with enix side so that side is ran outside of square's funny enough
@remi45 Every source I've looked at says both SE and acquired worked on the game.
Square Enix in their multiformat era. (I’m sure it’ll be announced for everything eventually.)
If it's not coming to PS5 at the same time as Switch, I'm sure it will eventually.
@get2sammyb 3 years between installments no?
It will look and play better on handheld anyway.
@Lowdefal “ It's more that they don't do it for AAA games, and as big as DQ is it's not a AAA game.”
The correct answer, is that they don’t do turn base for AAA aimed at the west. The modern day FF are more popular in the west than Japan. While Dragon Quest is a vastly more popular franchise in Japan vs the West.
@GnomishViking They just confirmed it's coming to PS5 at least.
They're churning out these HD 2D games faster than Activision can cod. I'll still keep trying to get into them but it hasn't been working too well and I'm already so tired of this style
@Dalamar on a 1080p lcd screen? OK.
Physical version with the full game on disc?
persona 3 reloaded will have a physical switch 2 version a shame square-enix has decided to go the key card route for switch 2 games..
N.i.c.e. 'm still on octopath traveler 2.its a instant classic. Word up son
@ztpayne7 Oh, cool! I didn't know, thanks for the info.
Soooooo.... this is basically just a port of the mobile game.
I can't wait! I played octopath traveller 2 first and loved it. Then I was a bit hesitant to try the first one but I got hooked again. Got platinums for both. I think I enjoyed the exploration the most, and the different story arcs. I wonder how much this one will differ in that regard.
I still need to play the first one. I platinum’ed the second and have been slowly doing a second playthrough. Now I’m motivated to buy and play the first!
Octopath Traveler 0 definitely looks awesome. I love how all 8 characters will be able to contribute rather than just the 4. It spices things up from the second game. I’m looking forward to it!
….and the save data bonuses are such a sweet add-on. Honestly I don’t get why more studios don’t do this. It seems like a slam dunk move in most cases
@B0udoir I really like the HD 2D style for the graphics, I just think the gameplay played second fiddle to the visual style. A game can look great but if the gameplay get stale after 20h then you really probably shouldn't make it a 80h game.
Did we get part one on PlayStation?
I really enjoyed OT2 and am looking forward to this one. It'll be interesting to see if they make a more focused, linear story.
