Ghost of Tsushima was, in some ways, a surprise success.

The game launched during the pandemic in 2020, and while it was always expected to be popular, it exceeded expectations with sales of over 13 million units announced in 2024. Even more impressive is that the title sold over one million units in Japan alone.

With sequel Ghost of Yotei due out on 2nd October, the franchise will be expected to match or even outperform its impressive predecessor, and early indications on the PS Store pre-order charts suggest it’s off to a good start.

Speaking with French website PlayStation Inside, ex-PS Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida hinted that the release is coming together real nice behind-the-scenes.

“Ghost of Tsushima felt incredible to play, and having played Ghost of Yotei at several stages of its development, I can assure you that it will be even better and that Sucker Punch has done it again,” he beamed.

While Ghost of Yotei does very much appear to be an iterative improvement on Jin Sakai’s infamous outing, the Seattle-based developer’s promising the “biggest map” and “greatest freedom” of any Sucker Punch game.

We’re personally hoping for a little more variety in the gameplay and quests, paired with the same outstanding gameplay feel the studio is known for. That alone will help put it up there with the best PS5 exclusives of the generation thus far.
