One of the most anticipated indie games of all time, Hollow Knight: Silksong is "real, progressing, and will release", with fans still begging for an update more than five years after its original announcement. The comment comes from a Team Cherry employee in marketing and publishing, responding to a fan asking how the game is progressing.
The community hotly anticipating the sequel thought a reveal was being teased by a chocolate cake of all things and some tweets hinting at "something big" coming. These teases turned out to be hints at last week's Nintendo Switch 2 announcement, leaving fans back at square one. A Nintendo Direct focusing on the firm's new console is scheduled for 2nd April 2025, and given the first game made its debut on Switch hardware, the livestream is the next place Hollow Knight fans can hope to see Silksong.
First announced in 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong has been long anticipated off the back of the first game. It's confirmed to be coming to PS5 and PS4 whenever it releases. There have been flashes of hope for the community, like a random age rating and store pages that came to nothing almost a year ago, with this latest chocolate cake fail only being the latest.

Don't listen to Ondore's lies
This is the problem with announcing games so early in development.
If it's more than two years out from a projected release, I don't want to hear about it.
I still reckon it's going to be a launch game for Switch 2
@Ralizah I usually agree about announcing too early. But they were in a unique and difficult position here as 'Silksong' was originally meant to be a Kickstarter stretch goal DLC for the original Hollow Knight with Hornet as a playable character.
But once they decided to make it a whole separate game they needed to inform backers, effectively announcing the game. And they did the right thing and immediately announced all Hollow Knight backers would get the full Silksong game too.
The amount of franchises that have been dead for over a decade, and Hollow Knight fans always act like no game has ever taken as long as Silksong.
Deep down Will be out before this game.
Why the f is this game getting the biggest hype in history. Besides HL3 of course.
It's a nice metroidvania clone and has a nice artstyle.
@themightyant Do Kickstarter backing pledges transfer to next-of-kin? Cuz I feel like everyone will have died from old age by the time Silksong actually comes out...
It's a shame they had to announce it so early. At what point is there so much hype and excitement that no matter how good the game is it doesn't live up to it? I feel like they're getting close..
One piece...... One piece is real!!!
I'll be there day one regardless.
I hope they go all out offering a Steelbook.
Fans not convinced alleged Hollow Knight sequel "Silksong" actually exists after years of silence from flaky devs.
@Frmknst I honestly don't get it either, I've tried HK SEVERAL times and it never clicked with me. I think people overrate it cuz it's a half decent indie darling.
Silksong is a myth
@Blauwe_Chimay Man that's a deep cut 😅
It'll feel really weird when this game does get a solid release date. It's been in limbo for so long, it feels like only but a dream.
@AdamNovice Still won't make me want to buy one.
@Enuo Me neither lol
@Keyblade-Dan waiting too long for these games! Maybe for my grandchildren.
I played this game at EGX 2020. Crazy it isn't out yet.
You mean there are still people who believe this guy's lies?
@NathanKang No, we like it because it's an amazing blend of Mega Man, Metroid, and Dark Souls with rewarding and challenging boss fights and tight, precise gameplay, and it does it extremely well within a bizarre world with interesting reveals and environmental storytelling around every corner using fantastic, unique artwork. If you think it's overrated, that's just your opinion, man.
Hollow knight is a good metroidvania, not more not less. I've played several since that I've liked just as much gameplay wise and even more by the art style. The hype for it and the sequel seems out of proportion. One of those things the internet collectively decides to get obsessive about, to show good taste in gaming, even if not played. At least it's a positive obsession rather than bashing on something.
I'm sure the first game is in my playstation plus essential library so will have to try it sometime. The problem is there is loads of indie games in my collection that I haven't tried yet, and the list just gets bigger lol.
They should keep trolling everyone saying it'll be a PS6 launch title with a fake box design, or say they restarted the dev from scratch because 2D wasn't enough and it's now a VR game.
I've found Hollow Knight too hard for my tastes. I know I should git gud etc, but I prefer gaming fun to endless frustration
@kcarnes9051 cool story
@tameshiyaku Hollow Knight is as much inspired by Mega Man and also Dark Souls as it is Metroid and Castlevania. So, I'd disagree that it's not more than a good Metroidvania.
