Polyphony Digital's driving simulator Gran Turismo 7 has been praised as "one of the best PS5 Pro" enhanced games to date, with "basically every feature of the new console fully utilised", according to Digital Foundry. The tech experts have delivered their verdict following last week's PS5 Pro update, and have found its extensive range of options to help bring "one of the best PS5 Pro patches we've seen yet" to console owners.
You can check out the video above for in-game footage, but in the Eurogamer write-up, John Linneman of the outlet covers PSSR implementation, an 8K resolution, and VR reprojection. Ray tracing has been expanded to all gameplay sequences instead of just replays on PS5 Pro, meaning that "reflections now more accurately correspond to the world around you and update more frequently." Matte surfaces now reflect realistically, which is said to look "incredible".
PSSR is an option in the settings menu rather than something that's automatically switched on, and DF's findings reveal an internal resolution that "drops to as low as 1080p with a 4K output resolution, versus a native 4K target with PSSR disabled and the default TAA active. You can use in-game RT with or without PSSR, but RT features in the cockpit view are only active with PSSR enabled."
The difference between PSSR and native 4K is said to be small, with only a few minor differences between them. "Still, PSSR looks good in most scenarios, so whether or not you'll want to use it is dictated by whether you're interested in cockpit RT or not — or whether you have an 8K display, as that's another feature tied to a PSSR requirement," Linneman explained. You can read his Gran Turismo 7 PS5 Pro write-up through the link.

Been watching this video, it really does look absolutely extraordinary.
Sounds great, glad the Pro crowd gets some more eye-candy for their bucks. Getting my physical (Black Friday) copy of GT7 in the mail any day now, looking forward to digging into this game even if I'll be playing it on the PS5 Pleb. 🐌
It's bloody gorgeous! 🤤
See. This is an example of PSSR done right.
Edit: I do find the whole "people bought a Pro to stop having options for different modes" a bit bizarre considering it usually comes from people who don't want a Pro 🤔
It really is a fantastic update, especially in VR where it looks significantly better than before and is now very clear in motion. Then for the flat screen you can have great RT reflections or 4k 120fps. Overall my favourite update so far.
Speaking of PSVR2, the Pro benefits this hugely in the few games so far that have been updated for it
It does look good the RT especially on the cars. Shame pssr image quality breaks up a little with white lines etc as john mentioned. But RT no pssr is an awesome image still. Shame as I use cockpit view mainly.
I‘m a bit sad that there are so many graphical options for more and more console games these days. Most people won’t know what the best configuration would be for their TV setup and their personal experience. With or without PSSR? 60 fps with RT, or 120 fps without? And when choosing 60 fps, resolution or performance mode?
Too many options here!
@Max_the_German this reads like a parody post, how can one ever moan about having more options to fine tune games, especially with how consoles and PCs are getting ever closer in their pricing and architecture, so it makes sense to give those players the same sort of settings PC users are allowed.
There’s still gonna be bog standard quality and performance for those who can’t be bothered to fiddle around, but I one day hope we get a whole ass menu with each individual setting available!
@Max_the_German I get what you're saying but I'd much rather the options be there, than being forced into whatever the developers want and it not being optimal like some other games have.
The only thing I would say here with GT7, is that it doesn't do a great job of explaining to the user what RT is active in the various configurations and that should be improved

They were talking about this on the DF podcast, and Rich was saying that one developer said most users don't even ever change the options. But as long as the developers automatically switch to what they think is the best option based on the hardware being used (1080p TV / 4K TV / HDMI 2.1 / VRR) I think this is fine in my book.
For people who have a preference PlayStation also has a system wide toggle for setting performance or fidelity as default, as well as other setting like inverting sticks so you don't have to do this in every game anymore.
@Max_the_German I'm more sad that we now live in an idiocracy and people can't tweak a handful of options and figure out what they like best without needing to have the minutiae spoon-fed to them.
@themightyant that invert Y option seems to work in less than 10% of games I've played, always have to manually change it
@themightyant this may be true for console users as a whole but I'd imagine the vast majority of those buying a Pro and a 120hz VRR display are more than happy to change a few settings, as this is essentially the enthusiasts market.
That said, they could certainly trim the options down in GT7, as there's no real point in the non RT 60hz mode and there isn't any RT in 120 anyway, so the RT/performance toggle doesn't really need to exist
@carlos82 Absolutely agree most Pro owners are enthusiasts who will know about the settings. Though a few will just buy the expensive thing and have no clue. "All the gear, but no idea".
@MatthewJP That's interesting, I didn't know that. I never use invert-Y (You heathen! Burn him at the stake!). You now have me questioning whether the prefer framerate system-wide option actually does anything OR if devs just set Performance as default due to it being the preferred option (according to Sony/Cerny) and I just assumed it took my preference into account. Hmm.
Yeah it looks really good and Polyphony Digital are really talented also lol at digital foundry for showing the Kodokawa van at the start.
@themightyant I'm pretty sure it (Y axis) works all the time in first party games as you'd expect, but very rarely otherwise.
As for heathen! What do you do if you want to look up to the sky? You pull your head back. Mimic that action with the dualsense 😉
Nice to have a really positive story to counter some of the more negative results.
I hope that some of the other less well implemented patches get a shine up soon!
Yeah i've been loving it on the Pro and its really got me back into it.
@Loamy Further proof the issue isn't the Pro.
@MatthewJP I get a mirror out and look down... like any sane person 🤪
@Max_the_German if you feel there’s too many options, it may be a good time to sell your consoles and leave gaming.
Having had a brief go on it at my mates house I can hand on heart say it's really nice. When playing it (on a control pad uurrghhh) I didn't notice too much as I was trying to keep the car on the track but watching my mate play it I could look at everything that was going on and it really does pop. It's very subtle but really cool. I just have to get him round to my house so I.. errr I mean we can get a good session going with my steering wheel.
@Max_the_German just choose what you like and don't worry about everybody else buddy 👍
@Northern_munkey I worry about people who feel overwhelmed by these graphical settings. They bought an easy-to-use console to AVOID this technical stuff, professionals should take care about this.
Maybe this „worrying about everybody else“ is part of my empathy.
Definitely the best showcase for the pro, at least from what I have personally played. On a brand new LG OLED it's definitely one of the prettiest games I've ever seen
I though the whole point of the pro was to remove the graphic options as the console was that good we didn't need to choose. That was the way they marketed it. Now there seems to be more options than ever, this is not what console gaming is about. I hated when they brought these options on ps4 pro and they should Have been removed again on ps5
@DonJorginho That's a slippery slope. Next thing you know your spending too much time playing with sliders for that sweet FPS/fidelity ratio, and you look up and think "wait isn't this why I left PC
🤪
Nobody seems to be talking about that much. I've been toying with PSVR2 (and there are great black Friday sales for it this year), but wondered if the Pro would help it or not. Glad to hear it does.
Polyphony I think have always done a fair job with visuals regardless of era, fair lighting, fair textures, fair reflections and things, it's just gameplay wise they kind of go odd directions or like GT7 just pushed me away.
As expected, it's the best Pro update by a country mile.
The only game that makes me want to buy a PS5 Pro.
@SuntannedDuck2 "Fair" is a gross understatement. Polyphony Digital have always done an incredible job with visuals, and performance. GT1, GT4 and GT7 are all pretty much the best looking games of their eras/hardware, and technical showcases.
Gran Turismo 7 was also the standout VR2 release and still is. This Thanksgiving, Sony should tell Polyphony Digital how grateful they are to have them around. PS5 Pro + VR2 + Driving wheel setup = Profit? For the low price of around $1700 in hardware and dedicating your entire living room to a driving simulator, you too can have the ultimate GT7 experience.
Polyphony always going along with Sony's crazy ideas.
I will say the VR2 gameplay in GT7 is phenomenal.
@Raffles
Polyphony always bailing Sony out by supporting their weird tech initiatives.
@RobN
If anything will get me to pick up a Pro, it will be the VR2 implementation.
Yeah and it looks better with there higher quality download from the patreon
Looks good for a PS4 game. For me I’m more excited about what the pro can do for current generation only games. With gran turismo it’s likely that we will only see a new game when the PS6 games out. With the PS5 being the bottleneck for the PS6.
@Max_the_German
Mate, thinking anyone who owns a console is a cast-iron moron who won't be able to flip one or two graphical toggles without having a meltdown isn't empathy.
@Max_the_German People don't buy an enthusiast-priced piece of hardware to avoid dealing with a few graphical options. If anything, the people who buy these things usually relish the idea of having all these options at their disposal, just like people who buy the higher tier GPUs on PC.
Your view doesn't exactly come across as empathy. And regardless, the default setting is almost always perfectly serviceable anyway.
@Ainu20 I am convinced that the Apple success story is: „You as a customer pay a high price, and for that you don’t have to care about technical menus and options. We at Apple are technical experts and choose the best option for you, trust us.“ And people trust. It’s the same story as with consoles: Using them is super easy and convenient, and the PSN prices are higher than those in Steam.
@Max_the_German There's no correlation between Apple users and video game enthusiasts. It's a pointless comparison.
@Max_the_German Two utterly disingenuous comparisons there.
@MrPeanutbutterz This is not the level of conversation I want to conduct.
@Max_the_German Samesies bro - I don't usually engage with people who couldn't debate their way into a frat party with a free beer keg, but here we are.
Now, do you have any actual points that are relevant to the conversation being had, or are you just going to come out with more completely irrelevant soundbites because your stance doesn't have a leg to stand on?
GT7 is the be all and end all for PSVR2. It is that good. A better version in VR would push me over the edge to jump on a PS5 Pro. But I own GT7 on disk and I simply can't secure the bloody external disk drive in Australia. Unbelievably frustrating from Sony.
To bad the game is still a grind fest and they said it looks better without pssr witch you can already do on ps5
@Dampsponge It's really not a grind-fest. After 50 hours I had over 100 cars.
Also, the regular PS5 doesn't have the other Pro enhancements FFS.
Fun fact... The pro was lauded as the solution to the either or conundrum... No longer would you need to choose between graphics and frame rate...
GT7 isn't a pro game, it's a PS5 game that has had updates. Even given that, GT7 needs pssr on for internal car view, but needs it off for external shots or your rear lights will strobe and fizz. It gets the ray tracing marvellousness by making all the trees look like blobs of play dough..
The pro certainly still does ask you to choose between one thing or the other. Look at other games. Pro mode, pro max mode. Same thing, slightly better.
It's a great thing, and we are all happy for people who adopted it, despite it having noisy fans, coil whine, randomly shutting itself down, etc... it's new and has teething troubles. But don't forget us OG PS5 buyers weren't even allowed to put SSD's in them for weeks...
@Raffles Bad choice of words so I see what you mean, wasn't in the right headspace when typing that, I did mean to say amazing or higher status words just didn't think about it at the time for some reason. Probably due to thoughts about other articles or other things at the time of typing.
Though I could say maybe even though I say more not use impressed type words in certain circumstances with modern gaming priorities of games these days.
I'd say the reason I 'would' consider keeping it to 'fair' or bumping it up to amazing then an excellent or brilliant or others is because of the fantasy like design is lost in later entries like GT7.
Even besides the layouts I can take layout designs being different even if I'm not a fan, I think the over use of some assets and design looks so overdone and unappealing or dull.
The GT Sport tracks are fine, the OG returned tracks the trees/camp site look of Trial Mountain and differences of Deep Forest/Grand Valley. It's not nostalgia it just doesn't look like what the names are, to me Deep Forest fits the name of Trial Mountain more in some sections of the tracks or the fantasy elements i kind of preferred of the overdone trees in the past. But eh it's minor.
Real life tracks I think look good (never been in real life, don't plan to) but I don't usually have issues per game how each of them looks, I'm not that fussed how real life tracks look or care for them much, if I don't hate driving on them, aka tolerate them is more how I see it. Otherwise they always look good visually with the details in the tracks, the advertising & more, even per layouts when they have them.
The 1080i or the 1080p of past entries to now, and the art direction has always been impressive no doubt. I never question that. Polyphony do push hardware and I like them doing so.
Part 2:
Like I don't mean fantasy as in the Loco Ness Monster in Trial Mountain kind of easter egg things I just mean how they balance the trees, walls and other elements of the assets.
I kind of prefer fictional tracks for the design for car physics feel around those tracks and visual design not looking realistic or overdone and not as appealing. Like they look better than other circuits being so comparable I can't even tell the difference between them at least in some other racing games I think GT7 does a better job blending what the real life ones look like (whether ones I've seen before in the series or new ones).
Like I enjoy Complex String from GT3, I don't care it looks barren, because the layout of the track is so fun to drive on yet never any mods for it to offer races just same time trial it's always had besides license tests.
While other racing games real life circuits or fictional (if I can even tell they are as even Forza Motorsport I could barely tell they were fictional half the time and I take that as not a good sign because I'd barely be able to tell what the designers did that is their own original track design skills and think they are only good at remodelling tracks then enough of their own original skills in fictional design) I couldn't tell you some apart they are so similar of assets, lighting and forgettable. But that's 'other racing games' then GT games. Can't remember which off the top of my head though.
But I won't deny that yes the attention to detail to make them realistic, and GT art direction has always been good from GT1 to 7 no doubt, they have done a good job and the assets/lighting/otherwise has always been good in the series no doubt I just don't always pay attention to it. Things like physics of GT5&6 annoying me & forced comfort tires in events or the game design appeals to me more, progression is what I focus on more with the games, then brands/visuals. I'm not a visual type unless it really sticks out to me & even then doesn't bother me or ruin a game just is noticeable to me.
GT7 progression is more my problem, then visuals.
@SuntannedDuck2 I appreciate the reply
What is your issue with the progression in GT7? I'm not someone who particularly cares about progression in games, but to me it feels good in GT7. I like the whole cafe thing too, the whole game has a lot of charm and a very unique style that is radically different to any other racer.
How do you feel about the physics in GT 5 and 6?
Regarding visuals, even being used to modern PC games on a PC more powerful than a PS5, GT7 does look astounding to me. The lighting is on point, skies and clouds are great, the attention to detail of the cars and tracks is second to none - and all this running at pretty much 4k90 on a PS5. Amazing game really.

Too bad anyone who bought a disc copy can't play it on the PS5 Pro while the Disc Drive is unavailable to purchase for RRP.
