Sony is confident it will meet its aggressive PlayStation 5 shipment target, as it’s managed to secure the necessary components to meet its lofty goals. Despite an ongoing semiconductor shortage, the company has been bullish about its next-gen consoles prospects, already surpassing 10 million units sold through to consumers.
For the current fiscal year – which will end on 31st March, 2022 – the company plans to ship 14.8 million units, which it hopes will help it to achieve an install base of near 22.6 million units in less than 18 months. And that goal is still very much achievable according to chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki, who confirmed during a conference call earlier today that it’s secured the chipsets needed to manufacture that many machines.
The firm is now moving towards profitability on the platform, with Bloomberg reporting that it’s now turning a profit on the flagship $499.99 model. Assuming that’s accurate, Sony is in a staggeringly strong position moving forward, as the console is already competitively priced and selling out consistently. To achieve all this during a pandemic is impressive.

Amazing news.
Hopefully this will end cross-gen period and hardware of PS5 will be utilized to full extent.
Cool!
Hopefully everyone gets one in time for horizon forbidden west after Christmas.
@Blacksmith1985
I hope so, but doubt it very much. The differential is still far too large and even top end PCs often don’t have the throughput to run games making use of the next gen console balances
Yeah, if I could buy one in my country (Cyprus), that'd be great. I think we got a shipment when the console launched, though we weren't allowed to pre-order, and then nothing anywhere.
Jim Ryan must be extremely pleased with these results. Sony is running a very smart business and I hope it continues to get bigger. Congrats!
I will say one thing in the UK they get loads more consoles for sale and better shipments each week than the Series X. Also with the series x Microsoft sometime only sell them on the game pass 2 year deal forcing you to get one that way.
I will be honest I’m surprised a trillion dollar company Microsoft cannot get more consoles made, poor purchasing of chips and supply chain assembly I guess.
Sony have done an amazing job getting stock to the UK.
Profit on the disc edition already? Can't imagine we'll be seeing a major revision for a while then, no need to cut costs given that the digital edition guarantees a lucrative revenue stream
@PSoneboi to play devil's advocate, having the PS5 has made lockdowns much more bearable for me 😉
That's surprising they're turning a profit on hardware already. Also more interesting when factoring in rumors they wanted to charge more for the console originally, and all the nickel and diming elsewhere in their ecosystem. I thought the subsidy was much deeper than it apparently is. Very interesting. Also says a lot about where the electronics industry as a whole is as prices have been generally rising (pre-chip shortage) while costs to mfr have clearly been making steeper drops than I thought. Margin is off the charts it would seem.
@Dezzy70 It makes some sense, really. Sony's a hardware company and their entire business operations have always revolved around electronics manufacture. MS is a software company that's always struggled with any kind of consistent manufacturing capacity since they don't really make all that much hardware (Surface is quite popular, but it's hardly a vast mass-market sales item.) Under normal conditions they can just buy their way through what they need, but it makes sense Sony could better navigate a disruptive period of parts supply better than MS. If for no other reason, better relationships with people at vendors who can get things done, due to doing al to more business with them in general.
Time to update that It Prints Money pic with Jim Ryan laughing.
I’m in a very annoying boat personally.. the semi conductor shortage keeps idling my Ford plant here in KY (USA).. I also can’t get my hands on a PS5 during all this down time BECAUSE of the shortage.. I am living in a sad conundrum
@WolfyTn
Better times are ahead. Hope you can get your plant to full production soon. Fingers crossed.
@UnlimitedSevens thanks man me too.. would honestly rather have a PS5 for a little while during down time before I go back though lol that place is brutal in the summer - especially with mask requirements
I would like to know how many of the 10million are actually in the hands of end users. My local computer shop has 3 of these in the windows for £700+ each and ebay and Amazon is rife with high prices.
@The_New_Butler
Yes I did here about the sever blade replacement.
Well let’s hope stock picks up soon
I guess I just expect to much sometimes as I see their money being all powerful to buy chip stock and get more UK supply.
But hats off to Sony for doing a dam good job for the UK.
I mean last month July they nearly outsold switch and series consoles combined in the UK, that takes some good stock issuing organisation.
@The_New_Butler @Dezzy70 Probably helps that all that Microsoft server farm upgrading was also the upgrades for PSN/Now, too considering they're hosting both platforms
That is good news. They can basically sell as many as they can make at this point.
Still Wont be able to buy one unless you continuously refresh retailers webpages all day everyday or you have money to burn & are willing to pay ridiculously inflated prices
Nice, I hope the stock situations improve and everyone that want it can get it soon 😃
@Dezzy70 I would it accept any console that forces me to get any subscription.
@Vyns For me personally if these kind of retailers get robbed then i would have a big smile on my face.
@Slippship NGVR honestly sounds like a dream, Sony going all in on VR
Anyone know how many units have been sold in the UK? It seems like they are doing a poor job here in Japan, around 60k units a month recently, with most going to scalpers.
Great news if true, but we've been told before multiple times that the shortages would be resolved...
I know several friends that have been wanting to get their hands on a PS5 without having to waste time hunting them down online.
