11 whole minutes of gameplay footage from upcoming hack and slasher Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires has appeared online. As you'd expect, the video is of particular interest to fans who were disappointed with Dynasty Warriors 9 — ourselves included.
So what are the key takeaways here? Well, the battle doesn't take place within a huge open world, for starters. The map is just a relatively small chunk of land, consisting of several enemy camps and a heavily defended castle. Once that castle is captured, the battle is won.
In terms of combat, things don't seem to have changed much, although the addition of stratagems is clear to see. Hopefully there's a good amount of variety.
And lastly, it should be noted that performance looks pretty smooth. One of the worst things about Dynasty Warriors 9 was its often uneven frame-rate, so hopefully that's been addressed on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
As far as we know, Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires is still set to release in 2021.

Oh didn't even know this was coming. With how bad 9 did I. Thought they might skip the empires version. I'm interested.
I enjoyed the open world in Dynasty Warriors 9.
@Bentleyma- They stripped everything good from the game and had the balls to charge for the characterspecidic weapons....
Plus it looked so terrible generic and boring.
@Elodin I’m confused with this series… what is the difference between the plain numbered entries and the Empires ones? Used to think they were akin to “complete editions” but sounds like I’m way off.
@Bentleyma-
Really it was absolutely awful as mentioned everything that made
These games was stripped, the open world was boring and lifeless and dear God the graphics
@suikoden Even worse then the old games? Look the games are fun and looked decent enough but i wont accept anything worse. 🤪
@Tharsman Empires has the same action gameplay but rather than a story mode, it's kind of like Risk or a simplified Civilization. You pick the next area to attack on a map screen then do the usual gameplay, though it typically has additions like stratagems, building defensive structures etc. There's basic diplomacy like alliances and resources to pay attention to.
The Xtreme Legends iterations are basically what would typically be DLC, like new modes and maps. No story mode and no Empires map mode, though.
@Matroska so I got a bit recently on a sale Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete Edition, because I liked Hyrule Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes… you saying that does not include the base story game? ☹️
@Tharsman No, it's like a DLC pack for the base game, basically. IIRC back in the day you'd import your base game save into XL, back in the pre-DLC era. It may have had a higher level cap, or even started levelling from scratch, but the overall point of it was new modes.
Think of it like taking a fighting game and then putting story and arcade mode in one release (base game), then challenge mode, time trial, survival etc in another release (XL).
Edit: Unless "Complete Edition" here means it also has base DW8.
