Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales PS5 PlayStation 5 1

Exclusives matter. During its latest financial report for the business year ending 31st March, 2021, Sony sold an eye-watering 58.4 million first-party games on PlayStation 5 and PS4. That’s a significant 17 per cent of the total 338.9 million games sold for its systems during the aforementioned term. Sales include both physical and digital purchases, with coronavirus skewing numbers further towards the PS Store.

Fascinatingly, the platform holder anticipates increased first-party revenue during the current fiscal year, which will end on 31st March, 2022. This is fascinating when you consider that juggernauts like The Last of Us: Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales all launched during the previous term. Obviously, ongoing sales of those titles will help contribute to these numbers, but clearly it has more than Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Horizon Forbidden West in the pipeline.

As interesting asides, PS4 has now sold more software than any other console in history, outperforming the previous record-holder, PS2. Sony has also said that it intends to invest even more money into its first-party pipeline, and based on these kind of numbers, it’s not hard to see why.
