Koei Tecmo has dropped a lot more information on Samurai Warriors 5 — the hack and slash prequel that was announced last week. For starters, it's got a confirmed release date: the 27th July, 2021. It's also got a new PS4-specific gameplay trailer, which you can watch above. It shows off quite a lot of stuff, and it's clear that the new art style is being pushed as a key selling point. To be fair, it does look good.
What's more, the official website for Samurai Warriors 5 has been opened. It boasts details on a number of playable characters, most of whom are from previous Samurai Warriors titles. However, because Samurai Warriors 5 takes place before the events of the other games, all of our feudal Japanese heroes are in their younger years. The likes of Nobunaga Oda, Mitsuhide Akechi, Hideyoshi Hashiba, and Katsuie Shibata are all young men still trying to find their place in the world. Even the eventual unifier of Japan, Ieyasu Tokugawa, is just a kid in Samurai Warriors 5. It's an interesting angle.
In any case, the finished game will feature 27 playable characters in total. Nine have been revealed so far — some of which are completely new to the series.

And SW4 has 55 for reference. I'm definitely interested, but I'm still curious to see exactly what the game will offer.
They are going to have a stream monthly leading up to the release in July. So we will see new Characters and more gameplay hopefully. DW9 Empires and I hope Toukiden 3 get shown next week at the New Game+ Expo next week.
After watching the ND last week this was the first game my son said he wanted. First he mentioned the Smash DLC, but that's DLC not a game.
30 games and he goes mosou. Teen boys and their random acts of wanton violence.
Never say the name Shibata Katsuie after what he put me through in Nioh 2.....
To me, the art style says this is the only way we could get the game looking decent on the Switch without the damn thing exploding in your hands!
Doesn't seem a lot for a Warriors game. Although they'll probably have 3 or 4 season passes to up that number.
@Ichiban Honestly, I wish they would abandon the Switch for Warriors. Warriors should be designed around next-gen power. This series has always been good to throw power out for what it does with enemy numbers, now let's take advantage of it, not design it to run on the Switch.
Perhaps this would be my entry point into other musou games, as I've only ever played Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The roster sounds promising enough.
@Ichiban
That's unless they decide to use the same animation style as the original Hyrule Warriors.
@Jaz007
I disagree there. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition ran beautifully on the Switch and didn't make any hardware sacrifices. If you ask me, it fits the standard if how a musou game should potentially run on a PS4 (though the PS5 games are coming around).
Yes, it's a port of a Wii U game, but all that means is that they really just need to spend more time polishing the game. There's much more content, much more in-game assets needing to be rendered, and simply many more enemies to fight than the Switch-original (and exclusive) musou, Age of Calamity, which ran... moderately poor, and that came after Definitive Edition.
