A few weeks back, someone claiming to have close ties to the development of Cyberpunk 2077 published a lengthy post on GameFAQs. Supposedly, the author wanted to share their knowledge of the game's current situation, as well as CD Projekt Red's plans for its future. The post ended up on Reddit much more recently, where it gained a lot of attention.
We decided against chasing this story here on Push Square, but that certainly didn't stop a number of other gaming news sites from picking it up. As you can imagine, it wasn't long before the rumour was doing the rounds on YouTube and other mainstream platforms.
The rumour itself states that CD Projekt Red plans to revive Cyberpunk 2077 through a "No Man's Sky style comeback" in the summer of 2021. It goes into detail about how poor project management resulted in a product that was rushed to market, and how whole parts of the game were scrapped or scaled back significantly during development. It's the kind of stuff that, at first glance, seems believable. But at the end of the day, anyone could write something like this.
Anyway, according to the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account, this rumour is a load of rubbish. It writes: "Normally we don't comment on rumors but this time we wanted to make an exception as this story is simply not true." That's that, then.
Of course, there could still be nuggets of truth scattered throughout the original post — at this point, there's really no denying that Cyberpunk 2077 endured a very troubled development cycle — but then this is the kind of rumour that takes full advantage of the developer's relative silence. Here's hoping that CD Projekt Red is able to share its official plans for Cyberpunk 2077 sooner rather than later.

CDPR would like to confirm that the game will not be getting better and in fact, will just remain sh*t.
A big difference is that Hello Games was able to keep its head down and focus on the game itself instead of the backlash. CDPR is already showing they probably can't do that.
Sure, CD Projeckt. I'll take your word for it. It's not like you've lied recently. eye roll
“We decided against chasing this story here on Push Square“. One of the many reasons I engage your site, a better filter for nonsense than most being one 👍
Ya i'm not buying cyberpunk anytime soon maybe a wait for gamepass drop game...
The whole part about it being scaled back seems to be true as we've heard even the developers say as much about various things. Remember that bit about wanting to make the story shorter than The Witcher 3 because apparently us gamers asked for it? Either that or they simply massively overstated it in the first place.
They're certainly in a rough spot right now of their own doing and it'll be interesting to watch how they get out of it
It doesn't appear to really need a "No Man's Sky style comeback", they just need to sort out the performance issues mainly.
@nessisonett While there are a lot of frustrating bugs in the game, it’s far from bad. I bought it on a whim with low expectations and the story and characters are awesome. Gameplay is strong as well. I have zero regrets playing it and even got 100% on it.
@FatalBubbles I’m mostly being facetious, don’t worry 😂
Wish people would stop saying a NMS style comeback with any game what has a disaster of a launch because it discredits what HG actially done. They listened to feedback, learned from mistakes, took criticism on board, became very humble and in the end turned the game into something far more then what they originally promised while not charging a single penny for any of it. Avengers, Anthem and Cyberpunk will never reach the levels of NMS or even FFXIV.
It’s unbelievable how rumours like this consistently have to be clarified these days.
Some of the stuff that gets shared around (by major websites no less) is so obviously untrue!
I wonder if that applies to the entire story and it’s not going to have a good comeback in summer 21 lol?
"Here's hoping that CD Projekt Red is able to share its official plans for Cyberpunk 2077 sooner rather than later."
I seriously expect a complete proper version to be done as a re release and anyone who had it already digitally will get a free copy, personally it's the best way to do it
CDPR: No no, believe us, we will do nothing to make this game anything like we told you. It will remain a hot buggy mess on the new systems and pc, and absolutely unplayable on last gen systems.
Us: What... ?!?!?
CDPR just needs to ignore the public outcry and rumors, buckle down, and put in the work to fix it. Here's hoping I can play a semi-complete version of this game in the next couple years.
Such a shame that the release was so botched. The game was really good.
I finished one ending before deciding to move on to the rest of my backlog, but I do plan to return to Night City as I really enjoyed everything I played.
Granted, I played on Xbox which seemed to fair much better than PlayStation - at least it doesn't crash regularly.
@WallyWest The extreme lack of clarity and making it sound easier to play No Man’s Sky PS5 and PSVR PS4 than it really is means and they’re lying and being deceptive again. Oh yeah, don’t worry and just use backwards compatibly. Expect you have to use two save played separately. They reported it as simple and seamless knowing full well it wasn’t. Figuring out that information took of effort to educate me away from buying NMS.
A real shame considering all they’ve added.
Looking at all the cut content CDPR seems to have lied about a lot more than the technical state of the game.
I actually forgot for a second this game existed, I'm glad this game is out and I won't be seeing 5,000 hype videos about it from some people. When the PS5 version is out I'll happily play and platinum it.
I mean to be honest, CDPR's PR hasn't had the best track record lately either... Only time will tell how they'll fix the game but I don't think I'll be playing it for a long time.
I really just want my refund so I can get on with my day now. I’m buy it when it’s working, I applied for the refund on the 18th December, come on now
It'll be interesting seeing them try and charge for dlc that was cut from the game after this debacle.
I beat the game just now on ps4 pro.
It will be amazing when performance issues will be sorted out.
Also will definitely replay ps5 version when it arrives and ps5 will be available.
EA said similar about........ Anthem
So they won't be fixing it by summers end?
Seems an odd thing to come out and deny whether it's made up or not 😂
@carlos82 I definitely welcome the shorter experience. I played 40 hours of Witcher 3 and can't mention a single plot point, but I remember killing a manticore or something and some ghosts in a village. Felt like a huge waste of time.
@roe because people are taking this rumour and running wild with it. The speculation is impossible to live up to, while promising a massive overhaul of the game, when in reality they will likely be addressing bugs and a few quality of life improvements.
i played this game on the series x for allof 3 hours,an hour of which was making my player look like pris from blade runner, selected the silver hair...oh look its not even silver hair...couldnt even get the colours right...then i played the game......oh my...crashes,freezez,fuzzy graphics 2 feet away from npcs, woeful car handling, very poor ai so many basic fundemental issues that i couldnt ignore.....so i flooged the game to some guy on facebook and went back to no mans sky ..........
Just as the raging fire was brought under control a bucket of fuel was thrown back at it..will this saga ever end or will this be cyberpunks "the empire strikes back" epoch? Meanwhile over on capital hill...
@carlos82 I think that was damage control, put out there to act as if they intended to make it small.
It's good that the hype around it died quickly so they can hopefully work on improving the game in some peace. the results will be better for it. Just look at the first patch that was rushed out and suddenly broke the in game menu.
Man it would be cool if cyberpunk is updated like no man sky to be feature complete just like the promise before.
Is it just me, or does that read like:
"Hello Games were eager and willing to redeem themselves. Us... not so much."
I've played loads of this, not sure how far in I am though. I'm loving it though, great atmosphere, characters, story. I've not really encountered many glitches to be honest, i saw more in AC Valhalla. Sure, i have seen some glitches but for a world this size i was expecting it. Every open world game i've played has had glitches of some sort. I was getting the game crashing error to start off with but haven't had one of those for quite a while. I'd happily recommend my experience with it to others
This game had pretty much fallen off my radar until this article popped up. I doubt I’ll play this for quite a while which is a real shame considering it was my most anticipated game
That leaked statement may well be true I know that a lot of the development team are very young and inexperienced and most had never worked on a huge project like this.
Take the gunplay the driving and the parkour does anything about it seem as good as anything else in the likes of cod or a dirt/forza or dying light?
No because the studio hired new inexpensive staff rather than employ experienced developers who can bring top tier work but also cost a lot more.
By the way I'm sure overtime it will be a top experience but cdpr have bumbled this royally.
As devs leave to work other places the true story will leak.
What? It's not true that they plan on making the game much better? Why would you possibly say that...
@nessisonett I signed up cause that made me laugh so hard and I wanted to thank you for making me laugh so hard. Thank You
The way I see it, even if it's true, why would I want to reveal it? That would mean telling potential buyers to hold off on purchasing the game until the big update.
@deathaxe I am a completionist. I hate seeing quest markers on the map, and I am definitely not the kind to skip story. Your examples are pretty good at explaining why I don't remember a single plot point, they are all over the place. Everything you mentioned sounded like a side quest. Feel free to take that however you want, but I just don't appreciate games that don't appreciate my time. If you enjoy a game that gives you benevolent ghosts and getting drunk for vampires, cool. Gwent was fun.
@darksoul77 Forza spends 100% of their time developing a driving game. CoD develops a shooting game. You will never see a game that can balance as many elements as CyberPunk and be better than those focused games. Should be common sense.
game was great, ***** the naysayers, sorry last gen console players =/
@FatalBubbles
Amen....This game is epic
@FatalBubbles
@Orpheus79V exactly. There is plenty of content and it is very much a full game with fully fleshed out features.
I love this game cant put it down it has its problems but for me nothing game breaking All the negative attention is just by large unfair.
it was highly hyped this dident help
They have done an excellent job all things considered the game is so fun its easy to overlook the problems people not buying the game are missing out even in its current state.
Its a shame when gamers start attacking developers instead of seeing the good and supporting them.
Wow, so CDPR wanted to clear the record...
There will be no No Man's Sky turn around?
That's not vey reassuring, they needed to knock that down fast.
Guess we're to expect the bare minimum and just simple bug fixes.
Honestly I'm done with this game now.
The issues run far deeper than what any amount of updates can achieve without pretty much making a whole new game.
At best if they fix the crashing and basic bugs they can salvage a 6/10 title.
