Throughout the entirety of the PlayStation 4 generation, there was one consistency that propelled the console to rising head and shoulders above its competition. The quality of Sony's first-party output is tough to match these days, with early highlights like Bloodborne and Ratchet & Clank paving the way for genre-defining titles to capitalise on an expansive install base a few years later. That allowed Sony's last-gen system to go out with a bang in its final year of real relevance, and one game managed to define everything those prior PS4 exclusives had been gunning for. The Last of Us: Part II is why we play games — a masterpiece of design, direction, gameplay, and storytelling.
You could say the rest of the industry has some serious catching up to do now as we crown Naughty Dog with yet another Game of the Year award. The studio's past two major releases, The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, both found themselves in our top spot come the end of December, with this third recognition once again proving the developer has the ability to go above and beyond expectations. And in spite of those assumptions of spectacularity, the team still managed to surprise and delight with this PS4 send-off.
That's because the team took a narrative risk — something somewhat rarely seen in AAA production nowadays. It's a captivating story of love and hate that introduces a fantastic range of new characters to the post-apocalyptic universe, which work in tandem with the faces we've already come to know and love. Abby and co bring an engrossingly new perspective to the harsh realities of a world without law while the supporting cast touches on a welcoming amount of trans representation. A plot fit for 2020 shines with powerful, emotional arcs and a quest for revenge that concludes in the very best of ways.
Let’s not forget about the gameplay tying those narrative beats together though, which has been expanded to better accommodate stealth and other sneaky approaches. It's an aspect Naughty Dog doesn't get enough credit for — the developer is absolutely one of the best in the business when it comes to third-person combat. With a silenced pistol, shiv, or glass bottle in hand, Ellie has the capabilities to outwit both the Seraphites and Washington Liberation Front without breaking a sweat. The water-washed city of Seattle can also boast of increased puzzle complexity as ropes and cables are manipulated to do your bidding, no matter how awkward the solution might look. The Last of Us: Part II really is Naughty Dog at its peak.
Could it also be the best looking game on PS4? We reckon so. What the Santa Monica studio managed to achieve with seven-year-old hardware is nothing short of staggering — it even looks better than some PlayStation 5 titles. Character animation is on a whole other level, settings and environments are almost life-like, and enemy design (who could forget about The Rat King?) reaches new heights. We cannot wait to see what the developer achieves on PS5.
The Last of Us: Part II is our Game of the Year, but it means so much more than that to so many. Despite the otherworldly entities roaming post-apocalyptic America, this is a human story fuelled by emotions. Love and loss influence both the game's narrative and gameplay as the dwindling survivors of the Cordyceps infection fight for their own wellbeing as well as the ones closest to them. There are no winners, there is no black or white — simply shades of grey. The Last of Us: Part II reckons with that internal conflict, creating a gaming masterclass difficult to top for the years to come. Naughty Dog dared to tell its own story, no matter the reception. Thank god it did.

How we decide our Game of the Year: This December, our editorial team created a list of nominees for Game of the Year based on our own review scores and a variety of other factors. After much discussion, we trimmed the list of nominees down and asked all Push Square staff and the Push Square community to vote on their five favourites using a points-based system. The ten games with the most points by the designated deadline were then determined as our favourites of 2020.

First third of the game was amazing, but then it started to drag a bit, then I got bored completely. Compared to the high stakes of the first one (possibly saving mankind), I never felt like I was doing something important, I was just running around for people I didn't care about, waiting for the plot to move forward. I forced myself to get to the end, but overall it was a disappointment and I found it too long for its own good.
Yet it's a game you have to experience at least once, because the overall quality is incredible. It didn't work for me but Naughty Dog pushed off the technical limits once again. I can't wait to see what they can do with the PS5.
My top 5 this year :
1. Demon's Souls
2. Nioh 2
3. Ghost of Tsushima
4. Final Fantasy VII Remake
5. Astro's Playroom
(6. The Last of Us Part II)
Happy New Year everyone !
Always gonna happen but I thought the narrative was overblown *****.
Good gameplay though.
Not great, just good.
As a football player once said
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3SdjqNz85M
Happy New Years folks a well deserved number 1 no matter what the vocal minority has to say about the game or about anyone who likes it.
I'll even throw in my top 5
Just outside the top 5 Ghost OF Tsushima and Tony Hawks 1+2 remaster
5.) Bugsnax (Ps4)
4.) Hades (switch)
3.) Dreams (Ps4)
2.) Wasteland 3 (Xbox 1)
1.) The Last Of Us Part 2 (Ps4)
Never heard of it.
Amazing game, not without its flaws but people are hating way too much on it.
I was doubting to play this game as I don't like horror and zombies, but I love Uncharted by Naughty Dog. Then the game became on sale 2 weeks ago for 19 euros. I tried it and was hooked, and now 19 hours in. I have to say this game is amazing: the story telling, the set pieces with the amazing surroundings which you don't find in an open world, the details and animations. I am glad I bought a ps5 after I did not own a ps4. I can understand it is number one here.
Deserved! The game has already won 150+ GOTY awards. Will have a shot at beating the original and Witcher 3 for most awarded game of all time.
Absolutely incredible game, from start to finish. 100% deserves all the accolades.
And also 100% okay if you didn’t like it.
Just perfect experience. Best game I played after GOW.
Personally not my cup of tea but there's no denying the sheer quality on display. Naughty Dog is a supremely talented developer.
Fully deserved. For me, last of us 2 is the best game Sony have made.
Well earned, Naughty Dog! What an incredible ride this game was. As the article states, it’s so refreshing to see a big AAA release like this take huge risks. I don’t think that fact has been appreciated enough through the games rocky release.
As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the best games ever made and an incredible sequel. Only one narrative beat rang completely hollow for me, a real accomplishment for such a huge story.
The GOAT.
😉
Ha, no I wouldn't go that far (best game last gen was RDR2 with The Witcher 3 a cigarette paper behind) BUT it's the best PS exclusive, of that there is no doubt.
Incredibly brave narrative, would've been easy to make a Joel & Ellie Wacky Adventures 2 but instead they went in an entirely different direction. I'm pleased that they did.
It stayed with me for weeks, there wasn't a day that went by for ages when I didn't think back on the game and the story and the characters. It's a very well made piece of entertainment, driven by the story but also some compelling and creative gameplay. The music and sound design are both top notch, indeed one thing I did do after completing the game was to listen to the entire soundtrack on YT including one version overlayed with a thunder storm in the background. Really took me back to the streets of Seattle.
It's not perfect but nothing is. I would say there was one specific scene I didn't like, one line I hated and maybe Day One with a certain muscular individual could've been shortened but I'm just nitpicking here.
For me it became more than just a 'mere' game and occupied almost every waking thought. Of course lockdown helped as it wasn't as if there was much else to do but I suspect even if I hadn't played it during this turbulent times it still would've resonated so strongly with me.
Naughty Dog are in the top tier of developers and only the mighty Rockstar belong in their company. Yes, both companies have questions to answer regarding crunch but their final products are always genuinely great.
The haters will hate and they'll never let go of it which is ironic really as the overall core message of the game is very much the opposite.
10/10
Knew it would be number on here. Personally the most disappointing game I've ever played. I think the story was such a let down compared to the first game, the writing isn't very good, characters aren't as likable/interesting, and the game is too long which isn't helped by really bad pacing. I think there were interesting ideas and I appreciate game devs taking risks, but I really don't think they paid off. Though to those who got enjoyment out of the game, good on you.
That being said, just because I think the story is really bad I still think it is overall a decent game, due to other aspects that were done well like graphics, gameplay and accessibility options.
Because other people are doing it, here are my top 5:
5) Ghostrunner
4) Doom Eternal
3) Crash Bandicoot 4
2) Fall Guys
1) Ghost of Tsushima
Just gonna pre-empt the downwards spiral of the comments section with the perfect GIF
Ghost of tshushima is still the better game of 20200.and god of war is the best.no doubt playa.word up son
Best AAA game I've played this year, visually stunning, gameplay is a big step up from the original with much improved stealth mechanics in particular, some really enjoyable exploration and environmental puzzles and very creepy in places. Quite a few set pieces will stick in my mind for quite some time
I really enjoyed its story and am glad it didn't play it safe, it probably just went one chapter too long but thats my only real gripe with the game. Finally Naughty Dog really need to be applauded for their accessibility options in this game, which really need to be the new standard going forward
@Col_McCafferty Yep, RDRII is Game of the Gen. TLOUII is like linear game of the gen. I'm glad I've done 2 playthroughs already. Looking forward to more playthroughs in future.
@carlos82 Yes I was impressed with the improved stealth especially with your partners - they no longer sneak around in the full glare of the enemy. They do well to actually hide. And that's an incredible AI programming going on.
@playstation1995 I'm playing Ghost now and so far it's really really good. If it tops Last of Us Part II I would be shocked but pleasantly so. As for best PS game, I'd rate HZD above God of War as well as Persona 5 but I understand why so many rate GoW so highly. It's an exceptionally well made game with a compelling lead and some excellent combat.
Also, Steelers one and done in the playoffs? Could happen.
😉
@nessisonett
Here i got the original for you happy new year.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzpndHtdl9A
@Col_McCafferty You're in for a treat, the story gets really good!
I will wait for a PS5 remaster with 60 fps etc. After finishing Astral Chain, my last 30 fps game will be Breath of the Wild 2 for sure. 60 fps is the standard AGAIN, like back in the good old SNES days.
@TheArt I actually replayed the original straight afterwards and it was laughable how much time Ellie spent running around in full view of enemies, it was like playing hide and seek with a toddler and having to pretend that you can't see them
@ThroughTheIris56 There are lots of things I already like about it but the main one is that it encourages you to explore and see where your journey takes you. Yes there are the main Jin missions but I don't feel like I need to rush through them, indeed it's almost in your interest not to as you need to unlock new skills and abilities and gear in order to prepare yourself for the bigger challenges ahead.
It's not the most realistic looking game though, much more stylised then I thought it would be and the camera could be better especially during cut scenes but these are only minor imperfections and don't spoil my overall enjoyment of the game.
It's a completely different game from The Last of Us Part II though, more apt comparisons are the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn and, of course, the more recent Assassin's Creed games. I can see why it's rated so highly and don't understand why other publications (Eurogamer for one) were so dismissive of it.
@Max_the_German That sounds like a dream, where developers prioritise framerate over graphics.
Might as well have called it from the beginning, we knew this disappointment would win.
@TheArt Have you tried the permadeath one? I think I'd maybe be able to get to Seattle but that's about it!
Its between this and Ghost of Tsushima for GOTY for me, love both for different reasons so as i've said before its down to a coin flip really. The PS4 really did end the Gen on a massive high for sure.
@PSfan4Life22 yeah... that doesn’t mean it’s better.
@Max_the_German I absolutely loved that 60fps DOOM on SNES......... well it probably had a 6 in it
@Col_McCafferty Yeah the artstyle isn't realistic at all. Though as much as I would have liked to have seen a more accurate representation of 13th century Japan, it is an amazing take on fantasy Japan. And I like how sidequests are organised into quests with a specific character. But yeah, if you like games like HZD and AC, chances are you'll like GoT.
Excellent work on these end-of-year lists, they've been a joy to read (even if I'm still sulking about the lack of love for Nioh 2)
@playstation1995 the last of us part 2 still better then the Steelers
@Gaming365247 ha, now you've done it.
😜
@Col_McCafferty
Lol idont see the image i posted i assume it did. But i was sick of this dude talking about his steelers every week before i joined here and now suddenly hes quite lol
I'm hoping for a PS5 patch or update soon. So we can experience an even smoother better looking version.
And just like that, credibility for this site is gone.
@orson
Boo hoo hoo - get a grip it’s just an opinion and no more or less relevant than yours.
@carlos82 I think I even noticed a bit of that in Uncharted TLL lol but I think they've finally ironed it out and got it right.
@Col_McCafferty Nah unless there's a trophy for it, won't bother. I'll probably try Grounded, beat Part 1 on grounded and it was crazy especially where there's Bloaters, and in 2's case - it'd be the Rat King that'd definitely be the problem.
@orson
This coming from a commenter with no picture and barely comments in your history you have no credibility period. The games been out 7 months now time to grow up and move on
One great thing we've all forgotten is the ability to play a guitar using the touch pad. I would love to see a couple of mates who play guitar give it a try, see if they can play something recognisable from their own music or a major band. I gave it a whirl but the results were, alas, quite poor so thought I'd be better off sticking to killing infected, by the end I was pretty good at it.
😉
Actually I wasn't, during parts of Abby's journey I died plenty of times and often very bloodily!
Abby's quest is actually even more compelling at times than Ellie's and that wasn't something I expected. It really did feel like a journey through hell with her being like some kind of righteous and mythical hero with a handy younger companion by her side. Almost like God of War.
😜
@Col_McCafferty. Not happening haha.sterlers got this.but yeah.god of war .ghost of tshushima.bloodborne.monster hunter world.persona 5.darkest dungeon.etc are amazing.shout out to gta 3 still playing that legendary game.word up son
@Gaming365247. Nope Steelers is better word up son
@Col_McCafferty There's a video of someone doing a cover of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, it's amazing.
I liked everything about the game apart from Joel’s fate. That alone prevented TLoU2 from being my GOTY. We’ve all heard the arguments for and against so I won’t delve into them again here. There are obviously two camps both with valid reasons, which was the point I think. If Joel deserves his fate then so do almost every other videogame protagonist (Lara, Drake, Kratos, Aloy ...of the top of my head). They’re all mass murderers but that doesn’t mean I want to see them dispatched of in such a brutal fashion. It just wasn’t worth it IMO. But congrats to Naughty Dog for the win, it’s clear they worked very hard on it even if it wasn’t what I wanted from a sequel to my one of my all time favourite games.
Very brave decision there, guys! Way to stand out with unique opinions! Not at all surprising, but disappointing.
I'm sure Sony's not still mailing checks for praising this game, though...
I can see why the game makes the list, and it's a worthy nomination in terms presentation and getting bold with trying something new. But the goty hype around this game is embarrassing. The gameplay is typical naughty dog popcorn play just this side of a Musou but with less depth, being a wannabe movie shouldn't be enough to clinch goty awards and critical praise. And the divisiveness of the game, alone, should confirm it's not the game of the year. It's kind of depressing that game critics are mostly critiquing games as films now. Great gameplay is panned if it's not attached to a cinematic drama, and mediocre gameplay is lauded just because it is.
I enjoy what naughty dog does with interactive films... Uncharted is great fun, tlou is thrilling drama etc. But i don't think anything naughty dog really merits game of the year any more than a Michael Bay adventure deserves Best Film despite outselling a Scorcese film 10:1 and being a fun few hours.
The hype around this game is marketing and praising NDs filmographic efforts more than their video game design. I'd honestly put demons souls above this despite arguing it doesn't even belong on the list, as an old game. It's at least a celebration of raw gameplay, even if it's a niche i personally dislike and new paint on an old game.
Said it before that the story fell flat for me, lessening the experience but everything else is a 10/10. Combat massively improved all the way around, the world is 'open' without over doing it (a good open world game is fun but can also be overwhelming) and one thing all devs should take note of is the world building. While the main story disappointed the lore and subplots were tremendous.
Art should be divisive, entertainment can happily be middle of the road.
This was a piece of art and a high point for the medium of video games.
Any other year of PS4, Tsushima takes the crown by far for me and I'm a Kurosawa fan, so I do not say that lightly. I think those two were miles ahead of the rest of this year's AAA games (that I've played). What a way to end the generation!
This was crafted so well, like Kojima Naughty Dog care about the little details and the gameplay loop was fantastic.
Like Kojima also, you can debate to death the plot and whether it's genius or rubbish, but you absolutely can't take away the respect the medium is given and the effort put in from the Developer.
Hopefully they'll stay the course and do something divisive again with part 3 if it ever happens.
@NEStalgia Stick to Mario and Yoshi games, you haven't got a clue.
Comparing it to a Michael Bay film?! Wtf?! Gaming needs to be about more than collecting coins and levelling up, it is as valid a story-telling medium as anything else. The overwhelming majority of the time spent with Part II I was playing an actual game not merely watching cut scenes. You don't know what you're talking about.
I thought that the first game was pretty good but I just wasn't as invested in it as some folks, I guess. I often found the gameplay to be frustratingly clunky. Also, full disclosure, I generally find zombie stuff to be very boring (not my cup of tea, I guess), so there's that. I didn't even know it had zombies when I bought it, LOL. I'd just heard good things and gave it a shot. That being said, I'm glad I did because I did think that the human element of the story was well done and I don't regret playing it at all. I enjoyed it.
I haven't felt the need to play the sequel yet but I'm sure I will eventually. None of the things that have some people all bothered are an issue to me at all and I'm sure I'll enjoy the story when I get around to it one day. I know not everyone did, but I'm glad that so many fans of the first game really liked it.
@ThroughTheIris56 Yeah I saw that and a cover of 'Hurt' which was a very fitting song.
I'd like to see what my mates could do, probably need to use a pick though so I'd make sure they use my old controller!
@Mpquikster missing content at launch?
"We wanted to address multiplayer in The Last of Us: Part II. As we've stated, the single player campaign is far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken. Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us: Part I, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us: Part II would not include an online mode.
"However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team's online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us: Part II. When and where it will be realized is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are as big a fan as Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it's ready."
Naughty Dog stated this 9 months before the game launched. Absolutely nothing to call the developer out on, not to mention this is a single player game
@fR_eeBritney I’d argue that’s what elevates this above all those other games you mentioned, though.
Naughty Dog could have just done another cross-country adventure with Joel and Ellie. Instead they did something more bold and conversation worthy.
@NEStalgia Okay, boomer.
@KeldorTheCursed I have wondered if your opinion of the first one relates to your stance on the sequel. Maybe the higher you rate part one the less likely you would be to enjoy part 2.
I liked the first one a lot but I didn't have a PS3 so played it first time round on a PS4 and this was after having played the Uncharted Collection first. Because of this I felt the ND formula a lot more than I would if I had played it before Drake's adventures.
Also, maybe there was too much hype about the original and so my expectations were too high. I am one of those that preferred Part II, thought it improved upon the original in almost every single way apart from one ; the Prologue, man that was some powerful stuff.
At this point you're probably better off waiting for the enhanced PS5 version before playing it.
@get2sammyb the only reason I bought it was because it wasn't just another Joel and Ellie adventure. I enjoyed them in the original but their happy adventures were clearly over at the end, whatever people think of this at least it was more interesting as a result
@NEStalgia "Great gameplay is panned if it's not attached to a cinematic drama..."
Fair enough but their number 2 game is Final Fantasy whatever. Are people praising that for its quality storytelling?
@NEStalgia I am mostly with you there, I haven’t played TLOU2 but if it’s anything like the Uncharted series or the first game it’s a pretty basic for a film/Netflix story wrapped around average to good third person shooting.
I used to love story driven games 10-20 years ago but for me (right now, could change again in the future! Loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2 recently mainly because of the story and I have high hopes for FF16) gameplay tends to take priority - so that’s games like Dark Souls, Diablo, Dirt Rally, Mario etc.
@fR_eeBritney I think to explain and justify Ellie's rage and mercilessness throughout her journey, the man's end had to be brutal. Like anybody who has no idea about the game sees the cover and wonders why's this girl so angry...plays it and realizes "Oohh ..." Ellie would've probably spared a lot of those Wolves if she wasn't that angry, it all ties to the narrative.
What a biggest surprise!!! C'mon, make another top 10 just to praise this game again...
@fR_eeBritney
Just out of curiosity, how did you feel about Metal Gear Solid 2? (Not the expected role of beloved protagonist)
Most of the time we play video games or watch movies for escapism so our heroes going on and on and on through sequels is great; we almost subconsciously expect the happy ending and look for the twists that take us there.
I honestly saw Joel as the villain at the end of The Last of Us, though I still loved him as a character. I could see how people saw him as heroic though.
I think the problem you can possibly get with some games like Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty, or even Star Wars and the MCU films now is that when things get bound by a winning formula that doesn't rock the boat, you end up with just polished iterations of the same thing and they can feel samey or repetitive eventually.
When you are free to create you might have a hit (Joker) and a miss (Justice League) or a maybe (Wonder Woman 84) but at least they are interesting, to me anyway.
Always subscribed to the Alan Moore ideology of "create your art and let it find it's audience, rather than writing for an audience because you can't please everyone anyway".
Thanks,
RPE83
@fR_eeBritney I didn't really like the game but I think that Joel's fate was the best part of it, it worked very well. The tension during the first few hours was incredible, but it fell flat after that.
I haven’t played it yet. It’s my next play through after Final Fantasy VII Remake.
@RPE83 I find it weird that Metal Gear Solid 2 was hated by some people at launch. I played it for the first time last year and it was incredible, plus the Raiden/Snake thing made perfect sense. I just couldn’t imagine being that fussed.
@TheArt Yes, from the trailers it was obvious something seriously traumatic had happened and to someone Ellie truly cared about.
There were hints it was Dina but....
We could argue if the manner of the death was gratuitous and unnecessarily over the top and here I do have some sympathy with the detractors. It was very reminiscent of THAT Negan scene from The Walking Dead. Almost designed purely to shock and disgust. Couldn't they have just shot the person? Wouldn't that have been bad enough? I'm a bit torn on this especially considering what happens in the second half and whom you play as.
@RPE83 I hated it haha well, maybe ‘hated’ is too strong a word. I didn’t really like it. But I’ve never really been a huge MGS fan really. MGS on PS1 was brilliant obviously but I haven’t played MGS3 or 5. I really enjoyed MGS4 though. Loved what they did with Raiden funilly enough.
I understand why ND chose to go down that route and I’m glad some people like it but I would have liked one more more adventure with the A team 😫
Clearly devicive for some but its a fantastic game and would be my number 1 this year(though the joy astros playroom brought me in a very tough year makes it close). Couple of narrative threads didn't quite land but compared to the Saturday morning cartoon plots many aaa games has, it still stands out.
@kyleforrester87 pretty much agree with the Netflix show with decent/good 3rd person shooter woven in analogy but its so my thing! Such a sucker for naughty dog and rockstar games for that reason.
Whilst i played through the first game i found it pretty boring tbh..i have not even been tempted by the 2nd..even though they are not my cup of tea that does not mean i cannot recognise the importance of this game and the work that was put into it so although i personally think ghost was game of the year it was beaten by a game that was equal in quality..well done naughty dog..
@fR_eeBritney @nessisonett
That's actually why I mentioned it, at the time I felt probably how a lot of people felt about The Last of Us 2 now. I thought the game was great but I wanted to play as Snake, I didn't hate it though, I gather some did.
I think now, I'd be more tolerable of what they were trying to do and appreciate it more, even if I'd still rather have played as Snake.
I would have loved another Joel and Ellie adventure in my heart but I guess it's my head telling me that narratively the way they went probably made more sense.
Thanks,
RPE83
@RPE83
Good post - well said.
@NEStalgia
Keep trying to down play the game. Name a good game nintendo did that has good story telling? I'm sure your check from nintendo is the mail
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone grumble about the linearity of a puzzle game even though there is literally only one solution to each puzzle. The same solution every single other person playing had to arrive at (I can’t make this statement without recognizing the brilliance of The Talos Principle regarding this).
The idea that games can’t have cutscenes or filmic narratives or be linear at all is just silly. This doesn’t make them any less of a game. There are many different types of games and the medium is better for it.
You know what i find funny from the hate/dislike camp. I mean seriously this game been out what 7 months now and the game still receives hate from the vocal minority no matter how many rewards it receives. Some so called gamers need to move on.
Sometimes i am ashamed to call myself a gamer because of other gamers actions. forget gamer in general but a PlayStation fan too.
If TLOU2 and Cyberpunk have helped remind us of anything, it's that gamers don't care about the people who make the games, only the end product.
@Gaming365247 so people who don’t like it should just shut up and go away? 😂
@Gaming365247 I mean well, obviously there are going to be people on both sides voicing their opinion on a gaming website. You can’t expect everyone who actively participates on Push Square to shower the game in praise if they genuinely didn’t like it. That’s what the comments section is for. Or would you prefer it if people only posted positive /gushing comments on every article, for every game? That would be quite boring I think. I think the bigger question is why it upsets you so much? Clearly you absolutely love the game, which is great, but why does it bother you if someone else doesn’t? How does it take away from your enjoyment of the game? As long as people aren’t being silly, i don’t see what the problem is honestly. Not having a go btw, I’m just curious.
@Gaming365247 Well it makes sense. Just because a game gets awards, it doesn't mean the people who disliked it because of major issues with the story will suddenly warm up to it.
And it's not like people who dislike the game are bringing it up. It's getting brought up in conversation by people giving it awards, it's natural for people to respond to this. If fans of the game are allowed to praise the game endlessly, we're allowed to criticise the game endlessly. I'd really love to be able to forget about this game, but it's pretty hard when it's constantly on the front page of news sites.
no other game has given me so many different emotions and the gameplay was solid from start to finish
@ThroughTheIris56 Hmm, well this is a GOTY round-up and they've saved the best for last. Plenty of other games have been talked about over the past few weeks.
Also, nobody forced you nor anybody else to read this article, you could just, I don't know, click on something else.
😉
I loved the flash back at the museum. Maybe my favourite moment.
it's clear this game is a winner I mean out of all the games in the top 10 this has the most comments.
Maybe there should be an award for games that prompt the most comments as TLOU pt2 has swept up in that regard as well!
Still need to play. So many games
Not surprised but still disappointed. TLOU2 is a perfect example of a flawed masterpiece. It's so well made but it's story decisions were a colossal failure. Killing off Joel did no one any favours. If you hated what he did at the end of the first game then you didn't care about Ellie's trip to Seattle to begin with. And if you were on Joel's side then Abby and her crew were completely irredeemable because of the cruel and malicious way they killed him off as well as robbing fans of the chance of Joel and Ellie spending time together (which the flashbacks don't cover because we know what happens in the end)
The support characters had no depth and some were just there as tokenism (Lev had no character trait other then being trans, unlike Bill in the first one).
It also has to be said to Push Square that in giving TLOU2 GOTY your also rewarding a studio with a brutal crunch culture with a massive turnover of employees because of said culture which is a bit hypocritical when you've spent weeks lambasting CDPR for the same thing. It shouldn't matter if one game came out more polished then the other. It's still the well-being of game developers that matters most here.
@fR_eeBritney It was the only part of the game that felt remotely like the first game which pretty much sums up my problems with Part 2.
Some people on here are a joke. You don't have to like the game but at the same time you shouldn't be surprised to learn that many many people do including gamers and critics alike.
We have been telling y'all this since the summer. It's not as universally hated as you want it to be. Most of the online detractors haven't even played it nor did they ever have any intention to. It was just a bandwagon for them to jump on, a chance to attack 'wokeness' and rally against something that wasn't aimed solely at young straight white males.
You were used.
🤭
Technically the game blew me away. The first part of the game had me so engrossed and then it kind of got predictable and the last part of the game was unnecessary. Good game but I didn't resonate with it like some people. I'm excited for naughty dogs next project.
@Col_McCafferty
"It was just a bandwagon for them to jump on, a chance to attack 'wokeness' and rally against something that wasn't aimed solely at young straight white males."
It's this argument right here where it's the weakest. I do not have to play a game to judge it and no company is entitled to my money unless it's earned. If the creators of the game think of their potential customers as Toxic I simply won't give them money. It's that easy.
When you watch a trailer for an upcoming Game of Movie do you make a judgement on whether or not your time and money are worth it based on the available information? Yes? Well there you go, I just countered the "Bandwagon" argument with a simple question.
To make what I said earlier more clear, I was hyped for TLOUII up until the leaks. The trailers and everything looked awesome until me and others realized the pre-release trailers were a lie.
@NEStalgia you can always tell when someone hasn’t played the game when they make ridiculous statements like you just did about the gameplay lol.
@kyleforrester87 well the tlou part 2 is the best third person stealth/shooting game out there only rivaled by mgs phantom pain not to mention it easily has some of the best level design of the gen.
@Col_McCafferty Whoa, no disrespect but I think there are some underlying issues at play here to invoke such a reaction when no one here has said anything wrong. People are just saying why they like/dislike the game as they have done on every other game in the top 10. Chill man.
@dark_knightmare2 I’m sure it is pretty good, when things clicked (lol) in TLOU 1 it was brilliant. I find the Uncharted gameplay loop pretty tiresome but I expect TLOU 2 is a lot more fun to play moment to moment based on my experience with the first game and from what I have seen/read.
I’ve been looking at it in the sale all holiday but I just can’t bring myself to download it, I think I’ll find it such a drag. The mood will take me one day I’m sure.
@fR_eeBritney he’s one of those extra passionate fans. Gets a bit angry when you don’t agree with him. Eek!
@kyleforrester87 If you can push past the downtempo mood, I feel it’s worth mentioning that the scenario/level design is some of the best in the genre and rises above Naughty Dog’s previous work by a wide margin.
@AdamNovice
For me Lev was naive and childlike. He offered the same perspective that Ellie had in the first game, but was sweet and sensitive, whereas Ellie was a bit more foul mouthed and mischievous. Both were still on the side of childlike innocence at the start though, and had a protector who saw to protect and preserve that, partly out of personal redemption.
I didn't hate what Joel did in the first game, he was a complex person in a crappy world. Ultimately he did what every single person you encounter did in a crumbled society, what was best for them.
He loved Ellie as a surrogate daughter and didn't want to live in a world without her, this was foreshadowed with Henry and Sam. At that part of the story Joel was "mid turn", he understood where Henry was because of Sarah and he'd "buried it deep and moved on", but he didn't care enough about Ellie yet to consider if he could suffer such a loss again.
I think Joel is the villain in the same way the protagonist of "I am Legend" is the villain, not evil or bad, possibly even heroic and virtuous at the same time.
Thanks,
RPE83
@kyleforrester87 Not angry at all, more bored with all the ***** thrown at this game.
To me playing a Soulsborne game where you die to the same boss dozens of times is the very definition of grim. Whilst it can be challenging at times The Last of Us Part II isn't exactly that hard to finish!
Give it a try one day, maybe you might be surprised.
@RPE83 Mate, so many darn spoilers.
🤦🤦🤦
@Gaming365247 what I see here is that people respect your opinion but you don't respect theirs, simple as that. You're attacking people because they didn't like something you like ? I'll let you think about what that looks like, and it's not good.
Demon's Souls is my GOTY, and maybe you didn't like it. And you know what ? That would be absolutely fine by me, I don't need validation from others and they're free to have a different opinion. But trying to dictate what others should think is not fine.
And apparently that applies to @Col_McCafferty too.
@Col_McCafferty thing is you’re tarring everyone being critical of the game with the same brush, making you as bad as the people you are apparently sick of listening to.
@RPE83 Heads up, surround your spoilers with
[ spoiler] [ /spoiler], removing the leading spaces. It should score out the spoilery stuff unless a user clicks it.
@Col_McCafferty
Apologies, I've edited and chopped all the sequel talk.
I probably should have learnt to do the spoiler tag stuff way before now; will do better next time.
Curious though, at what point can you talk about a game and it not be "spoilers"? Or is the etiquette to just always hide stuff?
Apologies,
RPE83
Haven't played it, but I will eventually when it gets to be around $15. I think I'll like it for that price for sure.
Complete Shocker.
@Cornaboyzzz
You might wanna look up the word respect. But yet people that hate dislike the game dont respect the people that like it. So you gotta respect the people that hate/dislike the game but its ok to disrespect people that like the game.
@kyleforrester87 No I'm not, if you read it that way then my apologies as that wasn't my intent.
It's fine not to like the game, my criticism is more aimed at those that don't like it due to their 'political' leanings shall we say.
And to address another poster, yes I do think one should actually play a game before being able to truly judge it. Watching a playthrough is only ever an impression, playing it is somewhat different. Movies don't work as they're only ever a passive experience, actually taking control of a character and guiding it though a particular gaming landscape is always going to be different compared to merely being a spectator.
110 comments later i'm done this convo. At the end of the day The Last Of Us Part 2 is deserving of GOTY rewards either you hate or not. Its been 7 months and its time to move on. The hate is getting dumb.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah.... And I definitely see this game as a nominee for a lot of things it did. But I disagree with the sweeping of awards by it largely due to production values and story direction, which isn't the core of the medium at all.
@zupertramp Will I've always felt that FFVII was always over hyped over other better FF games because it was moody and cinematic.... Same for Jak2, which started naughty dogs journey into cinema over game design. So more or less, yeah. Jak2, tlou2, ff7 (in general) imo gets praised for is cinematics more than it's clunky story or gameplay... Naughty dog in particular has always been presentation over substance though. Jak1 is probably the only game they've made that U remember as a well designed game more than interactive cinema.
@Kelrics90 When did ND call owners of the game toxic? They reacted to death threats, people who sent such comments are scum. I'm sure you're not like them so why so sensitive?
I think it's one thing watching some snippets of a game on your phone via YT, it's another thing entirely playing a game like this at night on your TV with a pair of headphones on and trying to make your way through an Infected zone or battling scars in the tall grass.
You can't honestly tell me it's the same thing and as for the lies, Jesus they were trying to hold back some secrets. It was a bit of misdirection on their part nothing sinister. It was pretty obvious that Ellie would be the focal point, you or anybody else must have been pretty stupid to have thought otherwise.
@NEStalgia It's like speaking to someone from the late 80's or early 90's at best.
What a narrow view you have as to what constitutes an actual game.
Maybe they should have stopped at Tetris eh. No cutscenes, no cinematic values whatsoever, no actors or scripts, just blocks. Endless blocks being dropped into gaps.
You're a bit of a snob, you know that!
😂
@Col_McCafferty but you’re saying this:
“Most of the online detractors haven't even played it nor did they ever have any intention to. It was just a bandwagon for them to jump on, a chance to attack 'wokeness' and rally against something that wasn't aimed solely at young straight white males.”
But I don’t see anyone above raising that sort of stuff, I’m not saying other people aren’t elsewhere but all I am seeing here are valid criticisms? So I can only assume you’re accusing people of somehow... maybe not being truthful with their criticisms or something. Suggesting when they say they don’t like the story that what they really mean is they can’t handle playing as a lesbian chick? Come on.
@NEStalgia Presentation over substance, oof. Seems harsh. But I'm not here to add to any pile on. Disagree as I might, your opinion is just as valid as anyone's really.
Plus it's a new year and my resolution is the same it always is: Don't sweat the small stuff.
@Kelrics90
" When you watch a trailer for an upcoming game or move do you make a judgement on whether or no your time and money are worth it"
The answer is no, either that i been doing things wrong for years it take more then one trailer for me to decide
@kyleforrester87 Where does it state that by detractors I'm only refering to some of the commentators on this thread?
Go read the comments on YT or Reddit or other sites, there are a few nasty fellows on this site but I'm not saying everyone on this site who doesn't like the game is some kind of homophobe or transphobic.
If you're reading it that way perhaps you want to and it merely serves to confirm your own prejudices, about the game and the people that dared to actually like.it.
Anyway yet another comment section under a Last of Us Part II story ruined. New year, same old *****!
@Col_McCafferty damn right, looking forward to indiscriminately hating on your favourite game of 2021! Happy new year!
@zupertramp yes, let’s not spend the first day of the new year arguing about what other people think of TLoU2 🤣
Start as we mean to go on 👀😁
@Col_McCafferty To be fair, trailers with content that's not actually in the finished product are a serious pet peeve of mine. So I'm not cutting them any slack here.
That said, I steered clear of almost all promotional material for this game so I didn't get the feeling I'd been duped. Didn't even realize there was any misdirection until well after I'd finished the game.
@kyleforrester87 @Col_McCafferty @Cornaboyzzz
I think some of the issue is, for example God of War and Uncharted never grabbed me quite in the same way they grabbed others but you'd have to really be hard pressed to not see the objective quality.
I played this through, finishing a couple of days ago and honestly haven't seen anything that warranted the mass "0/10" user score stuff.
I can always respect a well reasoned, polite argument and infact I love this game because there is so much to talk about with people willing to talk about it, whether they loved it or hated it.
Always thought if you don't discuss things, and take on other valid points, how can you ever refine and improve your own world view, or understand others?
I have seen people say variations of "I didn't like the story at all, technically it was amazing though" or "was good but not in my top 5 this year" and that seems pretty sensible to me.
Outside of that kind of opinion, this game does feel like when the BBC airs something and there are five complaints.
The Daily Mail comes out the next day telling people of my parents age why they should be angry and suddenly the BBC has thousands of complaints from people that didn't even watch the program.
Edit> Not saying anyone in particular is in that category, just that's the real issue (pile on culture)
Thanks,
RPE83
@kyleforrester87
New year same *****. Grow up and get over it.
@RPE83 I think best practice is to hide stuff. But I'm guilty of being so used to "knowing" something that I forget not everyone else does. So it's forgivable.
Not so much when it's the day of release and you're that jerk yelling so-and-so dies.
But you remind me, I also don't know how to do the spoiler tags. I should really look that up.
@Col_McCafferty had a feeling your comment would end with you pre-emptively complaining about people who had issues with the game and smear them as "haters".
Funny enough I saw no one in the comments hating before your comment. Only you hating people who don't blindly praise a game you understandably loved.
@Col_McCafferty Hi there friend.
Just wanted to say that I completely agree about
The last of Us part 2.
The witcher 3 is one of my favourite rpgs of all time, with some of the best story arcs and quests I´ve seen in a videogame.
And Red Dead redemption 2, along with the first one, are
THE best old west cowboy games of all time.
I loved that huge epilogue.
Arthur Morgan was a great protagonist, but John Marston´s story is the one that pulled my emotional strings.
And that ending, knowing the story of the first game, was so bittersweet.
As for Last of Us part 2, it was such a bold direction that Naughty Dog´s team decided to take, but a very welcome one, in my oppinion.
It was an amazing gaming experience that elevated certain gaming standards.
It was a very devise game, that´s for sure.
They either love it or hate it.
That´s how much of an impact the game had on people.
I personaly loved every second of it.
The gameplay, the level design, the animations, the A.I. and the narrative with the characters.
As much as I loved the first game, this one did the impossible.
Naughty Dog made a sequel that didn´t need to and should not have worked.
But it did. Tremendously. In my oppinion.
Can´t wait for the sequel.
10/10
Cheers, stay safe and happy new gaming year to us all
@Gaming365247 @Col_McCafferty I think you both need to take a bit of a step back from this conversation. There haven't been any particularly bad comments within this article yet, but you two are driving the arguments.
Remember that people are free to dislike The Last of Us: Part II and are able to share those thoughts here. All we ask is that they are well-intentioned, thought out, respectful, and open to debate. Nothing so far has gone against that in a brash manner.
Fellow gamers, please.
It is great to have a discution about games we either love or don´t.
But that does not mean we can or should be uncivilized to one another.
Do not let the "Sith" side control your actions and words.
Be cool and stay cool.
Cheers, stay safe and all the best for this comunity
@Gaming365247 well I haven't disrespected anyone and I haven't seen someone here telling you that you should not like the game. You on the other hand are asking people to not give their opinion if it's not the same as yours.
People should stop criticising the game and move on ? Well this very article said this : "Do you too think The Last of Us: Part II is the best PS5, PS4 game of 2020? Start the debate in the comments below." So, do you allow us to give our opinion please sir ?
You're ashamed of calling yourself a gamer because other gamers didn't like the same game as you ? Well you should stop gaming right now, because it'll always be the case, and you'll always stay ashamed and angry as you are right now.
@RaZieLDaNtE classy as always, the voice of reason although I disagree about Red Dead. Yeah John Marston is great and all but Arthur is by far the more superior character.
😝
@kyleforrester87 meh, do as you wish.
@LiamCroft really?! I'm the bad guy? Harsh.
🙄
@oldschool1987 you see what you want to see mate, not crying at all just bored that every thread about this game is a rehash of the same old arguments.
@Col_McCafferty but seriously, don’t take everything so seriously, especially when I am saying it.
Reading comments on here and love or hate it the fact the game still causes such heated "chats" kinda proves the power the game has and how defining for 2020 in gaming it was.
@Col_McCafferty shouldn't have used the word crying, I meant complaining.
But I saw what was in the comments here and I saw no one hating on the game, I think you're seeing what you want to see. And same old arguments? Do you want them to make up new arguments regarding their complaints about the game? How do you suggest they find new complaints for a game that's completed? That's like me complaining to you about your same old blind praise.
And if people hated the game, so what? Let them. It doesn't bother me, I loved the game, I'm glad it's been so well recieved, I don't care that someone hated it, and understandably so. The game was intentionally divisive, it took risks, which I liked. Let people criticise if they want, it doesn't affect you.
This game was it, hands down. It had more memorable set pieces than any game I've ever played. Gameplay was really cool. Try to be stealthy right up to the point you can't, then fight or run for it. TBH, this is one of the only games this year that I felt compelled to actually finish. Great job Naughty Dog, great job Neal Druckman, and great eye for talent Push Square. I agree with all who say you can't judge a game until you've played it. (Or, sure, you can judge it, and your opinion will come across as hollow and stupid to all who know the truth)
flips table in anger
Disagree with the “take story risk” part, just because the game story take risk that doesn’t mean it’s a good story, I think tlou 2 story is just a boring plain revenge story that’s been done better elsewhere.
Metal gear solid 2 ps2 take story risk and done "change the protagonist" better.
@LiamCroft
At the risk of getting my account banned show me where i did any bashing against the people that disliked/hate the game. If anything the warning should go to the people who hate dislike who bash on people who like the game. Oh wait its illegal to like a sony exclusive game like TLOU Part 2. Put this ok i'm done with this entre convo from 2020 time to move on and let the kids hate something else like Cyberpunk 2077 or soon Resident Evil Village.
@oldschool1987 I ain't got the time nor the inclination to go back and read every comment but if it was me and me alone that started the arguments then so be it.
🤦
@Gaming365247 you shouldn't be banned, you haven't said anything outrageous nor have I.
I guess we need to toe the party line and watch whom we upset as some posters are more equal than others.
😉
@Cornaboyzzz
Lol im not even Angry my game won on the site. If anything i'm more annoyed its only a game people need to let go of the hate dislike of this game it cant be good for people health. Matter a fact i've spent enough time argue with idiots time to play some other games on Ps5
@Gaming365247 "Lol my game won", ooooookay so you must be younger than I expected, that explains a bit.
"Let go of the dislike", but people have the RIGHT to dislike things, you need to understand that. Don't tell me you love every game ever made. People have the RIGHT to have an opinion that's different than yours.
You call people idiots and you ask for respect, but it doesn't work like that. You're right, go play other games on PS5, and try to not insult those who don't like them.
Devil's Advocate here, but I get a little tired of the whole 'crunch is bad' thing. My great grandfather was a coal miner. You want to talk about crunch. Sitting in an air-conditioned office getting well paid while doing your dream job. Yea, that's tough. If sometimes, deadlines have to be met, yea, you do the overtime. Small trade-off for having a job that earns you the respect of millions without even getting your hands dirty.
@Cornaboyzzz
Lol i get a warning yet people can insult people the like game ok then. and by the way im 34 and i have no reason to fanboy out a game or hate/dislike for whatever reason. For the 3rd time im done with this convo and now gonna use the ignore button. Happy New Years and stay safe.
@Col_McCafferty try not to let it get to you.
Happy New Year! Hope you had a good one
@Col_McCafferty @Gaming365247 The fact that you can’t see it is quite concerning. It’s as if you came here expecting a fight and when there wasn’t one, you started one anyway. I don’t doubt that there are places on the internet where that kind of response is warranted but I just don’t see it here. The comments here were relatively tame until @Gaming365247 mentioned the hate/dislike camps and @Col_McCafferty mentioned attacks against wokeness and rallying straight white males. With the utmost respect, you have to differentiate the angry trolls from the people with genuine criticism of the game. You can’t just attack everyone who disliked the game, that’s insane. Anyway, I’m calling it a night. Peace and love all ✌️
@LordSteev I tend to agree with that
@Col_McCafferty Yeah and in those articles, going out of my way to bash TLOU2 would have been off topic. However this article is explicitly praising TLOU2, so it's not mad that I'm criticising the game as a counterargument.
Yeah no one exactly forced me to click on the article, but I'm obviously going to see it since I like using the site. I'm not going to not use the site because I'm terrified at the prospect of TLOU2 winning the site's GOTY. At that point, I may as well just click on the article to see what's being said and contribute to the conversation.
I don't see what's the problem with people complaining about the game as long as it's relevant to the conversation and respectful.
@Gaming365247 Nobody insulted you, you did. You're 34, act more like it.
Happy New Year, take care.
@LordSteev I usually steer clear of this topic but I appreciate your admittedly unpopular angle. I work in oil and gas which has become a frighteningly thankless job. It’s full of some of the hardest working and dedicated people, working incredibly long hours with a very ‘poop rolls downhill’ structure, but we choose to do it. Sometimes work really does takes blood, sweat and tears, and somewhere along the way that became wrong, I guess?
No one is forcing anyone to do a job. You always have a choice to be there. I think this anti crunch argument comes from the idea that life’s actually fair. There are far heavier injustices in the world worthy of passionate discussion. And when it comes to providing for my family and creating something I’m truly passionate about, I’d wade through the darkest pits of any job and be okay with it.
Not trying to ruffle any feathers, just trying to offer my perspective from someone who can relate to the crunch structure of video game development. Cheers!
@Jimmer-jammer are you bilingual? You're speaking English and Fax.
@Jimmer-jammer
I tip my hat to you. The world would grind to a halt without oil and gas, at least in this century. Like you say, as far as crunch goes, those padded office chairs have no shackles attached.
@LordSteev That's really underplaying how bad crunch is. Crunch periods can mean staff are working 100 hour work weeks. That's 100 hours of a week of intense work, very few breaks, little leisure time, reduced sleep and a myriad of other negative health effects. On top of that, they spend very little time with loved ones, and the stress of so much work can mentally break people. Developer burnout is such a big thing due to how damaging things are. Yes people generally sign up for game development because they're passionate for it, but 100 hours of anything in a week is bound to kill someone's passion.
Just because there worse situations out there, it's no reason to not recognise when a situation is bad and changes need to be made.
@ThroughTheIris56
It's not ideal, but what job is? If enough of them can't take the work conditions, they can vote with their feet. Sadly for most of the workers, they have a job that people on the outside looking in covet. All of them knew crunch time existed before taking the job. If it's something they really can't handle, they have the option to step down and make room for the next enthusiastic college grad standing in line to replace them.
I'm not saying it's good, or right, but if you want a job that many other qualified people also want, it's completely up to you to decide if it's worth it or not.
Well deserved IMO. Naughty Dog deserve all the accolades for this, it was a technical marvel and there's nothing that can hold a candle to it in that department. The acting and mo-cap were top of the range too. I thought Ellie's revenge story was going to go another way (with a different character killed) but when I realised what was happening and experienced it, it was a major WTF moment and I felt like I'd been hit with a ton of bricks (much like Ellie felt). The violence is not glamourised or sensational it's raw, brutal and shocking and you feel bad killing folks (mostly) apart from The Rattlers (I slaughtered those evil SOB's with glee!)
I went through every emotion imaginable in my playthrough (an emotional wreck at points!) and it's commendable for the writing team creating these characters and situations you actually give a damn about. Even the little side stories - reading letters, diaries etc was heartbreaking at times and worthwhile straying from your path to find. I initially hated Abby (for what she did) and was horrified that I was then playing as her - it certainly messed with your head until you learned more of her back story...
It's certainly not a feel guid experience but it's a damned fine one...
@ThroughTheIris56 unfortunately, one of the driving forces of crunch culture comes from the very nature of video game development in that scope of work is constantly changing. I deal with the very same issue in the industry I primarily work in.
Let’s say two new wells are drilled under an existing contract, our options are:
1.) refuse and lose all future work
2.) say yes and become a 24h operation due to a limited work force until well completion (which is indeterminable).
3.) hire new employees with the very real possibility of termination when the work dries up.
4.) hire contractors to help complete the work knowing that contracts will be terminated when scope is manageable by the core team.
I’m not trying to be argumentative, I’m just trying to highlight the fact that the many different contributing reasons to crunch culture are not as black and white as Jason Schreier’s interviews with disgruntled employees (who exist in every industry) would have you believe.
Crunch culture is not fixable. There are however different levels of managing it, and some companies handle it better than others, for all sorts of different reasons.
Have a good one!
For me it was kinda Rockstar and RDR2 all over again. Over indulgent.
It's one that should be played as a technical masterpiece for the time but one that's ultimately flawed with the story being no where near as engaging as the first and the gunplay loop having barely been improved on from the first which is never a strong point with ND let's be honest.
The first game was gripping and it was easy to be invested in the main characters while the 2nd had lovely moments sprinkled through it no doubt the main cast this time (including Ellie) had little redeemable features.
Leave opaque characters to Cinema.
@Jimmer-jammer The answer is hire contractors. They work job to job anyway so they already know what to expect. This also shows your regular employees you value them by not killing them with overwork for the sake of profit.
That's not the real world, I know, but it's a nice thought.
I’ve been gaming since Combat on the Atari 2600 and this is the first game I believe is a must play but I also can’t recommend to anyone. A truly bewildering experience for me.
@zupertramp absolutely, though hiring contractors brings its own heap of logistical issues. You greatly increase your liability, strain your existing work force due to the training needed to bring contractors up to speed with company s.o.p’s, job specific processes, and adherence to company mission goals and quality control.
Further, let’s say 8 out of 10 members of your workforce are hungry and motivated to bust their backs for a bit and opt for option 2, how do you handle the remaining 2 who opt out but are needed to complete the work? Guess which 2 employees Mr. Schreier talks to...its simply a messy situation that I don’t believe gets proper representation from both sides of the issue.
This is a valuable discussion but too often it boils down to “crunch bad!” and it’s just not that cut and dry, as I can see you understand. Cheers!
@Col_McCafferty PS3 was the only PS gen I skipped (went 360 then came back for PS4), so I played it on PS4 also. That probably affected my opinion on TLoU some as it had aged a bit by then. I probably wait for a PS5 version as you suggest, but you never know. The mood may strike me before then ☺
I have to say this is a strange one. I have never felt compelled to comment on this game despite my own personal opinions and have sat back and watched a lot of the discord but I have seen a bit of a shift on the opinions or at least the tolerance of opinion on TLOU2. Just to preface, and its a little ridiculous I feel the need to do this but, I am very gay as is my boyfriend. I was quite "meh" on the first game aside from the great relationship building (he loved it). Part 2 is something different, the same dedication to characters but I didnt feel that story wise. I felt the overarching revenge story and the conclusion were nothing new from the media in the last 30 years (I dont want to post spoilers) it definitely dragged on a little too long despite my enjoyment of a more sunny later environment. I felt a certain character's motivations were pretty random beyond the big spoiler and it was a redemption story without merit that was reinforced with a situation that wasn't needed just to force the audiences perspective for the final scene. I maintain you can't have a morality tale about killing when you murder countless people and any one of the hundreds of people you are forced to kill could be either protagonist or antagonist in the theory of the game. It fell a little flat with me and fell into many of the zombie genre tropes (tribes, zealot military organisation, skin head insane group). I read a lot and the story just isn't the masterpiece it is made out to be (I have read more compelling literature about virus enhanced spiders), maybe gaming wise but I would also argue that rpgs and jrpgs specially have had much more complex storytelling for a long time. The gameplay though smooth is the same refined from uncharted 1 (I remember coming to both series in the ps4 era and feeling the comparison). Visually, it is unmatched, the acting is top notch but for me it just isn't what it is hyped up to be either positively or negatively. I have absolutely no desire to play it again. A little side note, I had 3 game altering bugs while playing, yet compared to the several articles about FF7R broken textures (which I never noticed) TLOU2 was either perfect for most people or given way more rope to hang itself with(TLOU2 has great rope physics if you didn't know). After reading about this game in alomst every comment section for the last 8 months I felt the need to give my first and last opinion on it. Happy new year everyone!
It's fitting that in one of the worst years in recent history: TLOU2 gets yet another GOTY on yet another poll.
@Jimmer-jammer eh, mostly I was just (playfully) giving you a hard time. I was a pipeliner for a little over 4 years. Never really found it all that bad other than it just being something I wouldn't wanna do my entire life. Still, rigs are a different beast I reckon.
A few web sites did a lot to fester the hate for The last of Us. I can't help to believe many people were influenced by them. Many of them may have had a different view if they played the game with out preconceived thoughts from them.
@3MonthBeef
I love movies so that might be the reason. The game however is definitely no interactive movie. Detroit: Become Human goes much more that way and also doesn't get shot down for this. I play TLOU2 with heartbeat in my throat and enemies you don't see easily. It is not like you press a button and from that point on all enemies show up with a yellow arrow above their head. The way you sneak around, how you have to play might not be perfect, but I like that. The only problem I might have is that I don't know how to use those bombs so I mostly don't use them and try sneaking most of the time haha.
I loved TLOU 2. I would summarize:. The games is a little uneven at times but when it hits the highs it's unsurpassed. It's also a little overlong. The graphics and gameplay are nothing short of brilliant. It is firmly in my games collection of games I will never sell.
@velio84
The difference between TLOU and TLOU 2 is graphic violence. 2 brings it to a different level but it works well.
It's just press forward to get to next cut scene innit

@Toypop oh yes please tell all us lowly peasants how wrong we are and how our taste is bad smh. You feel they are 8 out of 10 games cool that’s your opinion but most people think they are masterpieces because they are all you can do is either accept it or live in denial about it your choice.
@Aya-chan lol I love how much salt the masterpiece and goty leading tlou part 2 threads bring.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L You was not disappointed my friend lol
@solocapers I swear people like you who try to say the gameplay was only a little improved make me seriously believe you haven’t played the game. There’s a reason people put the gameplay up there as the best of the third person shooter/stealth genre with only MGS V giving it competition. Oh and just to give you a heads up nobody questions ND gameplay any more since tlou part one to now so maybe get off that “criticism” because it’s not only played out but it’s absolutely not true anymore
@velio84 Bloodbourne remaster will ba announced soon. It can be the only reason there's no PS5 patch for it. Native 4K, 60fps, updated character models I can't wait to die in Yarnham all over again.
@Channel42 erm yeah, thanks. So you didnt like it, good for you. Join the club.
@Toypop ha ha. What do you consider to be a masterpiece? How low are your own standards?!
If you don't get why RDR2 and The Last of Us Part II are considered great by so many then that's cool but don't be so arrogant about it.
Your taste isn't superior to anybody else's and nor is your opinion more valid than others.
@Aya-chan Yep either you love or hate this game no grey area at all. Shame the haters can't see a middle ground and appreciate the so many things it did right. For me it wasn't my personal GOTY that goes to Hades but I can appreciate how good TLOU2 was and graphically it doesn't have an equal. Story is subjective hence so many diffrent opinions. But I have seen fan polls on about 5 sites TLOU2 won every one so no denying many millions love this game.
@Texan_Survivor lmao wow every point you just tried to make was a lie you can’t be that delusional
@RaZieLDaNtE Well said mate.
@dark_knightmare2 careful now mate, you might get told off.
😉
You're right though, a lot of criticism on ALL sites and online channels (just to make that clear) comes from people who 1) clearly haven't played the game and 2) never had any intention to as 3) they probably don't own the required hardware.
And yes they in turn jumped on the bandwagon of hate because of what they thought this game was promoting.
It's just a game and a bloody good one. Yes it's a bit bleak but so what? If you just want a sunny happy time play some Mario or Fall Guys or maybe stick to Tetris, no chance of being mildly perturbed or shocked in any of these games. If you have a stronger stomach then maybe The Last of Us Part II is for you. It's very very good.
@velio84 I'd wait for the (inevitable) native PS5 upgrade for TLOU Part II. It's just about guaranteed and will look even more stunning (It'll no doubt be packed-in with the multiplayer). As for Bloodborne? Yup that too is a best kept secret for a PS5 upgrade with new bells and whistles.. .
Lol that was predictable.
@Col_McCafferty strange response, we were encouraged to give our opinions so I did. I guess my opinion is only valid if it matches yours
@Texan_Survivor weakling really lol how old are you? I didn’t have to elaborate because once again every point you tried to make was a lie there’s really nothing to elaborate on.
So a day after this is post the poll is s dead give away how real gamers think of this game out of about 1,600 votes 67% say the game is very good. But 172 comments say otherwise. And really the arguing is still going on? Think its time for pushsquare to lock this comments
@Texan_Survivor yes it's almost like they need our validation for their opinions.
@Gaming365247 yes PushSquare please lock comments because some people don't think like me, and they shouldn't be allowed to.
Gaming365247, more like Dictating365247.
One of the best games of all times for me.
It's just perfect even in its quirks.
@Texan_Survivor the irony is strong with this one. Gotta love internet tough guys.
I am waiting for the 10 - 15$ version
Each to their own but I played Nioh 2 more than any other game this year. I prefer my games gamey and not like interactive movies.
@Arnna
Lol Nioh 2 is even more of a "movie"
@Texan_Survivor You have a cheek calling anyone a fanboy. Of the 22 posts you've made here since joining, 12 of those are about trashing TLOU Part II, Naughty Dog, Neil Druckman or SONY. Give it a rest, it's like an echo chamber. We know you don't like the game.
@Arnna Good for you but I assure you that The Last of Us Part II is still very much a game.
Maybe I'll give Nioh 2 a try should it ever come to PS Plus.
@Texan_Survivor
Game direction is an artistic endeavour and crunch is a business practice. They are not even vaguely related.
Half of your points have nothing to do with critiquing the game.
Like it or not, all AAA publishers operate in similar ways. I’m willing to bet you don’t boycott all major games. You’re absolutely full of *****.
Also, please explain what ‘mainstream media’ means. You’re embarrassing yourself.
@Col_McCafferty relax, of course it’s a game, it’s just in that overtly cinematic style which ND are known for.
@Profondo it's very sad, why not talk about something you actually do like?
It's okay if you don't like the game but it's almost as if some critics have been personally offended by Part II and have been traumatised by the experience.
Some on here are good contributors and offer opinions on a range of games and topics.
Others, sadly, don't and seem to only emerge when it's time to bash The Last of Us Part II....again.
I don't get it.
@Gaming365247 lol if you say so... 🙄
@dark_knightmare2 wow.. that's an emotional response pal. You got shares in ND or something?
I can confirm I have completed the game thank you very much.
There's plenty of respected reviewers who feel that ND weaker elements is in gun play.. no one is perfect. The world that they create, the writing for the most part and attention to detail is outstanding.. but plenty of respected reviewers have always said gunplay isn't a strong point.
For what it's worth it's still in my top 3 this year. I just feel that it's not as perfect as some think, ergo my comparison to rdr2 and by the same token the hate that it received from some was ridiculous and nothing but hate because a female lead didn't look "womanly enough".
Can't things be shades of grey anymore?
Game of the year for me too. The way the stories told and how it makes u change ur perception of certain characters is masterpiece. One thing i disagree with tho is theres no way TLOU2 is the best looking game. Thats easy ghost of tsushima
@Col_McCafferty You must be mistaking me for someone else. TLOU Part II is not only my game of the year, but also game of the generation and I stated so in my comments further above. Obviously you don't read all comments and go steaming in on people with the wrong impression.
@Toypop What a load of waffle.
Resi 2 was 2019 but I only played in last October. Had a real.blast with it even if story B wasn't as different as it should've been and there were some jarring continuity issues.
Overall though I really enjoyed it and I'm now a Resi fan. Got to play Resi 3 at some point and intrigued by the upcoming Village.
In terms of ratings, I don't know maybe it depends if your overall rating is affected more by what you like about a game/movie/TV show or more by what you didn't like. Nothing has to be more perfect in order to merit a 10/10 rating but you may beg to differ.
@Profondo I was agreeing with you mate.
wait when did this came out lol
TLOU2 convinced me that I don't like Naughty Dog's formula and to think twice about playing another game from them. The environments were gorgeous, but the level design is pretty much running down a twisty hallway until you get to the next cutscene. There's no real agency in the traversal, just keep going forward and you'll get there. The encounters just weren't fun for me, and they were super repetitive. The same handful of stealth encounters, the same 6 or so enemies througout, mix in the occasional boss or chase scene. I think I saw Ellie's stealth kill animation hundreds of times by the end. The story was poorly paced, but worse, the characters just didn't work for me. They weren't relatable. Ellie's entire motivation is just reflexive revenge against people who were mad at Joel for the same reasons she was and she never really confronts that internal conflict she just keeps throwing everything good in her life into the meat grinder for no reason. I hate her. Joel should have let her die. Abby's the character that shows the most growth, but her story doesn't really get started for HOURS, and I still don't care about her as a person. Everyone (except maybe Dina) in this game just kept making really bad decisions that I totally disagreed with and then bad things would happen because of it (surprising right?). I wanted more agency in the story, but it was really just a movie about a crapsack world with crapsack people that happened to have interactive elements. Maybe ND should just make animated movies. I liked the first game quite a bit. I STILL think about that ending. But the sequel was a big disappointment. This one's just not for me.
@Col_McCafferty Sorry, my bad. Reading back on it I realise that now!
@NoxAeturnus you summed the story and it's flaws up very well there.
Exactly with my point in that while games are going for the movie style story they should leave the opaque characters to movies and TV as playing as one of them is a slog and it's incredibly hard to invest in a main protagonist who you really don't care lives or dies.
I guess that's kinda what ND was going for but it leaves the experience as unfulfilling as it can get.
Everyone who didnt like TLOU Part 2 will be first in line to buy Uncharted 5 and will forget this even happened. Any everyone will love ND again
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Also added bonus of overtime when the PS5 remaster is released and we see the same arguments again.
@NoxAeturnus plz put some spaces in your essay next time so its easier to read on my phone. But from skimming through I take it you didn't like the game lol.
@solocapers So you saying you don't want a main protagonist in the game. This is all very confusing. Fun but confusing when this game is debated.
Strolls into the party after everybody has left and realises there’s nothing to do but grab a broom and start sweeping up the mess...😳
@NoxAeturnus I have to say you just took the words of my mouth, friend.
I completed TLOU2 something like two weeks ago. I am a HUGE fan of the first one, who really got me with its characters and its story. The ending was pure genius.
But here, everything is so... dumb. People are dumb, in this game. They're dumb, and they're evil.
ND seems to have crafted its game so we can understand that murder is wrong. Guess what ? I already figured that out myself.
In this game, I never felt confortable when attacking ennemies.
There's one sequence... when we chase a woman throught a hospital... we have to press square if we want to beat the sh... out of her.
Well I didn't press anything. I didn't want to kill that woman. I wanted to talk to her. To see if something else was possible.
So I did nothing. And you know what happened ?
Nothing. The game was just stuck on Ellie's face. I HAD TO press square. So it wasn't my choice AT ALL. I understand the need to tell a story, even a dark one, but please ND don't pretend that it's my choice to beat this woman.
Cause it wasn't.
And everything is like this in this game.
Dogs, same story. "See ? You can throw them a ball, they're gentle and all, so you didn't have to kill them before. You feel bad, heh ?"
huh, yeah, I HAD to kill them before, cause you made me to, ND, thanks for that.
And all that story makes no sense.
I'm not talking about Joel and its fate, but Ellie's. So, some guys WHO KNOW WHAT JOEL DID find him again and they don't even think about making him tell where is HUMANITY'S LAST HOPE ?
I thought this all thing was Abby's father own project. So it was natural that his daughter tried to continue in his direction. Even if she wants revenge (she could have found Ellie and THEN get revenge).
But no. Even when she figures who Ellie really is. "I don't want to see you again". Say, what ?
So... Joel doomed humanity to SAVE one person. And it's still a intelligent debate (does ONE life value the entire humanity ? Do we have to answer that question as a mathematician or... as a father ?).
But in this game, Abby doomed humanity a second time, and this time just to KILL someone.
And Ellie... she never learns anything.
Not until the very end.
So, at the beach, she finally figure that murder is wrong, that she can not murder Abby.
But to figure this out, she just murdered about two hundred people.
This game really, really desapointed me. I see what ND tried here, and it was ballsy, yeah. But it was also poorly executed. Cause in the end, its story and characters just doesn't make any sense.
Just my two cents on this, anyway. I can be wrong. It's how I felt when playing this.
@Max2574 where did you get that from?
I mean the main protagonists are unlikable and while the game is pushing you to struggle fighting on deep down you feel no connection to the character.
Totally agree with this article! Happy new year everybody!
@Bobobiwan So you didn't feel bad indiscriminately slaughtering everyone in your path as Joel and Ellie in the first one but it's an issue in the sequel? That's kinda inconsistent, no?
Also thinking if people want agency and choice so bad they should probably just go outside. What a bizarre argument. It's like saying why couldn't Bowser and I just talk it out over this Princess dispute. Lol, what?
@zupertramp Off course I did.
But, in my understanding, the first one was more about survival. It was about kill or be killed, and protecting someone important.
Some could argue that the second game is about the same topic, but here the only reason that motivates this journey is revenge.
Ellie did chose to go on a rampage mission. She could have stayed at home, with her love. And later with her child.
But no, every time, she chose to leave in order to go kill someone.
And the ending kinda make it okay, in my regard. Cause finally, she understands that she can't live like that. But after how many kills ?
But anyway, that's just my understanding of the game, I really, really don't want to spoil people who enjoyed it. I don't pretend to possess the ultimate truth about everything.
I can be all wrong about it, and that's just fine.
And people who enjoyed it, that's also fine.
It's a damn well crafted game, full of qualities (motion capture ! acting ! graphics ! dialogue ! even gameplay !).
It's just the story that didn't click with me.
@Texan_Survivor
“The game was handed the award of best direction even if it was made under horrible crunch conditions and even if it was massively leaked before release after the "director" refused to pay some of his employee”
Your own quote conflates game direction and business practices. They aren’t related. Especially in the context of whether the game is deserving of an award.
A game or film director is not responsible for the wider business decisions of the publisher/studio they work for.
Leaks have nothing to do with artistic direction. You have no proof this conspiracy has any validity either.
I’m not debating if it’s good business practice or not, obviously extreme crunch isn’t good. Do you think this doesn’t happen at EA or Ubisoft or Activision? You’re dreaming.
You don’t seem to understand what the term ‘Director’ means in this context. It’s similar to that of a film director in that they are responsible for artistic direction not business direction. Sheesh...
Quentin Tarantino is a celebrated film director. He used to work for the film studio Miramax which was part owned by Harvey Weinstein, a prolific sexual predator. Using your ridiculous logic we should all give Tarantino’s films bad review scores and trash them because of the actions of the film studio bosses????
No one would make this leap because it’s a straw man argument. Like many people you’ve got a bug up your ass specifically about TLOU2’s supposed narrative crimes and are using unrelated information to bolster your argument.
Also you’ve failed to answer my question about what the ‘mainstream media’ is. Please inform us.
@zupertramp "their number 2 game is Final Fantasy whatever. Are people praising that for its quality storytelling?"
Honestly imo FF7 Remake had fantastic storytelling without the whole "whispers" bs (which just just them making a very ballsy point anyways). People saying the storytelling in the game was bad overall are probably conflating not liking the game with it being bad.
Beyond incredible absolute masterpiece. This was only game I finished this year that weeks and weeks later still thought about every day. After game ended i didn’t have words to describe how I felt because I felt every emotion at once. Graphically animation & smoothness ruined other games for me. Tried playing ghost right after and ghost felt so blah to me in terms of detail in facial animations and smoothness of movement and story telling. Eventually played ghost and loved it but had to wait like two months cus every game after left of us 2 felt mediocre for longest time.
Nice, naughty gods
My top whatever
1. doom eternal
2. ff7 remake
3. nioh 2 (just beat it)
4. Rogue Company
5. tlou 2
6. ghost
7. rocket league as a free to play
8. fall guys
9. re3 remake
@Cloud7794 Yeah I thought I'd remembered skimming over the original review on this site and seeing something about the game's story not being up to par with everything else but looking back over it I don't really see but a few minor complaints. So bad example I guess.
I know for a fact Liam loves Doom Eternal which has a story I think most would agree is, well, unnecessary at best. That might serve as a better example of a game that had a crummy story but many still revere the game overall, including (and especially) professional reviewers.
@zupertramp Yeah, I agree a game can definitely be well-received without an emphasis on story. I just know FF7R in particular is a very divisive example on either side because people had very strong opinions on the ways it was different from the original.
The original guy saying that great gameplay is panned without a good story is just objectively wrong. Doom Eternal is a good example. Rocket League also has a 9/10 on this site but it's not exactly a Cold War era political drama focused on nuclear weapons and the space race.
@Arugula Interesting, Yara was also the only character I had empathy for.
She was relatable, maybe because the game didn't try too hard to make me feel some way about her, she was just real. There were too many tricks like "oh look, this character is sad/pregnant/rejected/lost/angry, they're not so bad you see, look at what they do at this point, you should like them", and so characters' decisions felt forced to make you feel a certain way. Even Ellie became insufferable, just because "look, we want you to feel torn between her and Abby at this point of the game".
If it works on you, the game becomes a masterpiece. Otherwise, it just becomes boring. That's why it's so divisive. Problem is, some people don't get that, they don't accept that it doesn't work on everyone.
@Arugula Exactly, in the first one, Joel makes questionable decisions, and you're left to think about it and make your opinion of it. Whether you like it or not, it works.
In this one, if you don't feel like the game wants you to feel all along, decisions and characters just seem off.
I have to admit I was really disappointed with this game especially after waiting seven years for it to come out. The original Last of Us was amazing, the story was incredible, the characters had a lot of depth in the gameplay was easy to learn. It may sound silly but games like this can you come invested in the characters and the sequel ruin the game by killing the main character that was beloved by so many fans. I don’t understand why naughty dog felt the need to do that, to spend more time on Elly? Focus on her sexuality which in my opinion was a waste of gameplay, who cares what her sexuality is. It was completely irrelevant but Naughty Dog felt the need to keep pushing the agenda. I could have cared less if she liked men or women, it doesn’t matter, period. But what really ruined this game and I say ruined because I’ve played through once whereas with The Last of Us I’ve played through half a dozen times. It has been my all time favorite game. What ruined it was forcing us to play as that bitch Abby who killed Joel. Are you serious Naughty Dog?!!! Not only did we have to play as her which was seriously a ***** waste of time but we had to attack Ellie with her as well, then to top it off Ellie let’s her live, I mean WTF!!! I haven’t been that disappointed in a fictional story since Apollo Creed died in Rocky IV. The ONLY way Naughty Dog can somewhat redeem themselves with this garbage of game is to have a part 3 and It starts with Ellie waking up from a nightmare and Joel is standing there asking if she’s ok. I was so pissed at this game that if they do come out with a third one and it continues from where the 2nd left off, I won’t buy it or play it. I’ll just keep playing the first one and pretend part 2 never existed.
I don't mind the fact Joel died so much, it's just how he died is dumb. The writing around his death is just laughably bad.
Firstly, the WLF had stupidly good luck in finding Joel. They were originally looking for just Tommy, but they somehow manage to find Tommy AND Joel in the most lucky situation. Then neither Tommy or Joel has the guard up or is slightest bit defensive, even standing in the middle of the room with no weapons. It's stupidly out of character for the guy who distrusted a family who needed a lift, even before his daughter died. I've heard the argument "he got soft living in Jackson", but we never saw that happen, and even if it did that's ridiculous. There were so many ways to make Joel's death great, but Naughty Dog really squandered it.
@Col_McCafferty & @Platstion1995....... GOW is mostly a corridor walker with a deep Norse Mythology backdrop that is mostly dead and uninterested but pretty and dull, combat is crap until you get to the Chains of Chaos, they forced integration of Atreus into combat rendering Kratos a weak God making all the weakly designed enemies bizarrely overpowered and rendering combat hit sponge excercise(i.e. KRATOS is used to killing God's and great beast, all the enemies in GOW 2028 are below Kratos, yet because Atreus has to be forced to be used in combat, hence Kratos' combat is nerfed), puzzles and side quests are practically useless and are more filler content, characters are not well realized or developed resulting in all of them being forgettable, The only great or good things about GOW are: The world Serpent, The relationship dynamic through the story of Kratos and Atrues is amazing, so as is Atrues knowledge of Norse Mythology, The Valkarys and finally the big one being Atreus' true identity........ And Atrues' identity is the reason GOW has gone from 2nd or 3rd tier Sony first party IP or franchise to being part of the tier 1 games Ala TLOU, Uncharted, Spiderman, Horizon, GT, etc.
I think GOW(2018) is a bit overrated as a game for what it delivers and the praise it has been given, nothing ground breaking happened with the game, they only tapped on the famous Norse Mythology( same reason AC Valhalla is hot property compared to AC Odyssey when issentially they are the same game, maybe Odyssey should have tapped on the Hercules popularity instead of the Spartans and Athenians), and then linked the new characters story to an absolutely popularity /famous Norse Mythology character...............
I got pissed after finishing GOW cause I felt the entire story could have been told in one room or one area instead of being force to go to places that made no sense for absolutely no reason other than to push the story forward.
So while GOW is a good game I felt the effort of 2018 other than having high res textures and completely milking Atreus identity twist, the game did not bring much to the table for all the noise everybody is making about it.
The sad part about gaming is that GOW and Got are the reason games have been focusing on nothing but graphics for the last 15 years, which means more mindless shooting and porn sexy graphics, why must EA Canada innovate or take risks when beautiful graphics sells the game effortlessly, you would actually be stupid as a dev to try to do something new to FIFA instead of graphics, cause people buy game for shiny graphics and mindless shooting, it's same reason Doom 2020 is the same Doom released in 93/94 only with shinier graphics.
It's an okay game but for me Doom has to do a lot more that sinner graphics for a game that still looks and play like an 93/94 16bit game. If it keeps the same formula I doubt the franchise will be able to compete with modern games and the reason Doom is even being talked about is because it released in a quiet period being help by the delays last. If it's so good it must try and release at the same time as COD, i bet I would crash and burn major and if the game keeps the same formula then the next release will be final game in the franchise............. If you want evidence look at Hitman, a once great AAA title now on its last legs barely surving as A or AA title, same reason IO is now moving to James Bond, it's such a shame that 47 is gonna Die a forgettable gaming death because the game stagnated and pandered to the Blood Money Fanboys.
Can Somebody make Jackie Chan Stunt Master Remake or Remaster
OH
And can anybody do Roll Cage Stage 2 REMAKE OR REMASTER.
A REMASTER OR Remake of THE GETWAY IP is just a pipe dream at this stage
@NEStalgia....... I think game play has moved from being the core of what you would define a video game is being.
Perfect examples being: Journey, Flower, Nintendo ring fit, Summertime Saga, Fire Watch, Detroit Become Human, Heavy Rain, Kentucky Route Zero, Gone Home, All the Music Games such as your Guitar Heroes, Singstar and such, VR and AR.
So games have long past being about mashing butting for the highest score.
So TLOU 2 is well in its right firm to be Knighted king of games for 2020.
Naughty Dogs you sons of Guns they actually did it.
The setting or world of TLOU would in theory have some people in denial and fighting the situation and some embracing the situation happening in the world of TLOU.
They have actually gone transfered the emotions that people living in such a world as TLOU to gamers resulting in the divisiveness around as if people who played the games were actually in the gaming world, people who liked Joel are still pissed about the events while others are indefferrent and have accepted the events that have happened as if people were actually in the world of TLOU.
Emotions are still raging 7 to 8 months after the game released.
Amazing achievement by Naughty Dog then.
So the article is correct IN saying that TLOU II is WHY WE PLAY GAMES.
@carlos82.... Thank you sir, I am not sure which Part1 a lot of people who like to praise it when bashing part 2 were playing.
From my play through of Part1, 2 things were clear:
1. The game needed and was getting a Part2.
2. Either Joel or Ellie is going to die in Part 2.
These are thoughts and feelings I got when Joel killed the people who were trying to use Ellie for the cure. It clearly dawned on me that this was not a typically Bruce Willis or Jason Statumm adventure of little bruises here and but bad boy hero saves the day kind of adventure or the I do what I like and the world can't touch me adventure.
As to how people thought either Joel or Ellie would survive Part 2 after the ending of part 1 really is the puzzling part for me.
@GREGORIAN It may be why you play games. It's not why many others play games. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying tlou2 shouldn't review well for the type of game or tries to be and the audience it's for. It's a good example of that type of product for that audience. But I still don't believe that audience represents the best if gaming any more than a point and click puzzle adventure does. Gameplay is inherently the center of a video game. The argument you're making is eventually that video games are dead, replaced by interactive cinema.
I don't believe interactive cinema is more than a particular subgenre for a particular audience, and Id go as far as saying that market represents the larger mass of non gamers than players of other genres of games and overall enthusiasts.
But that's not too be conflated with the schism of fans of 1 that dislike the story direction of 2. That's a commentary on naughty dog games in general since Jak2. It's not saying that tlou2 disappointed because one expects something else after 1. It's a comment on the type of production or is in general. Interactive cinema is a perfectly valid category. But I don't feel it's a viable representation of the best game of the Year. Any interactive cinema game. Heavy rain, Detroit, etc certainly fall into that category. Flower, ring fit, etc however are firmly gameplay first (but also not goty material.)
But before declaring the death of gameplay driven video gaming at the sword of naughty dogs interactive movies, even on PlayStation where that's unfortunately becoming the face of the platform, that's going to have to be taken up against the many Demons Souls fans here. While i personally don't like the FromSoft formula, I find myself siding with the Souls fans in what seems to be a battle for what PlayStation is all about between the gameplay-first Souls fans and the movie game naughty dog fans.
Interactive cinema may be where PlayStation is headed, but it's not where gaming is necessarily headed. And if the souls fans are an indicator, PlayStation is going to have a split identity in that regard on the road ahead as well.
I respect what naughty dog does in their genre, and enjoy their work, but i still don't believe it's a representation of the best of gaming by a wide margin. The best of it's genre, absolutely.
Tlou2. Particular certainly isn't gameplay focused, and i don't expect that from nd. It's fine. But if it didn't have the production values out would be a mediocre game with an average adolescent fiction story. It's overvalued purely on it's production value. RPGs have had much deeper narrative themes for decades. But they present dryly like a book than a blockbuster film.
@RPE83..... You sir are are higher intelligence of gaming, you are the higher being of gaming, higher than us console peasants and definitely higher than the PC Master Race.
Great Post. Games are now complex and dynamic and multi-faceted in how they tell stories and build their worlds and allow us to play. And I am liking it very much.
It would be a breath of fresh air if all people(who have been hurt by Joel kicking the bucket) admit that they just wanted to play as Joel instead of lambasting the story unreasonably.
It's like me with Uncharted, I have not beef with other characters but I don't touch an Uncharted game unless Drake is in the driver's seat, I don't hate The Lost Legacy and absolutely love the lady who was kicking Nate's in Uncharted 4, but I only but the Uncharted with Drakes at the helm.
Just like I like Gran Torismo when it's offline.......... Stuff Gran Torismo Sport Polyphony....
@NEStalgia
I actually largely agree, I think you've helped me crystallise my thoughts more.
In another thread, I was lamenting the "we'll just do an open world RPG/Destiny clone" approach to designing a game without any real thought but I suppose my overall gripe ties in with your point.
Some games try and be very cinematic or tell this amazing story. The issue is the story is not always very well written for the medium as the open world design can remove a sense of urgency/peril.
Sometimes absolutely the player should be compelled by the narrative, or forced by design to focus on the story.
Equally tying into your point about about playing a game/playing interactive fiction; Days Gone got panned quite a bit but I actually found doing the hordes pure simple fun. In a similar vein I like Streets of Rage 4 because it's fun beating up goons, or Untitled Goose Game because it's fun tripping virtual small children in puddles.
The Flame in the Flood, or Don't Starve were great examples of "games". I always liked 4X games too because they were, well, "games".
Anything with a challenge or a scenario to overcome, and a sense of satisfaction in doing so.
Based on the games you mentioned, how did you feel about Journey?
I'd possibly disagree on TLOU2 a little, because I actually think I spent more time playing a game; ironically on FFVII Remake, an RPG I am really enjoying, it has felt at times oversaturated with cutscenes to tell a story.
Certainly for me, TLOU2 is an improvement on what I remember from early ND games, it was closer to Metal Gear Solid at times (well, the way I played the game, anyway) rather than one hell of an on rails rollercoaster.
Thanks,
RPE83
@Col_McCafferty This is always the argument. I didn't play it so I can't judge it. Yes I can.
I took the information I had and made a purchasing judgement. I didn't buy it and the leaks being accurate were why. I was hoping the leaks were fake because like anyone else I was hyped.
It's that simple. I don't blindly love everything Sony and it's studios pump out.
