It's probably fair to say that the hardcore Call of Duty community hasn't taken too kindly to the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. With skill-based matchmaking at the forefront of multiplayer complaints, those playing the game day in and day out are racking up a huge list of problems the latest entry in the franchise faces. That all comes to a head on its official Reddit page, where the mood isn't exactly positive. Post after post details a new issue with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, so much so that it's tough to find anyone that's feeling positive about the experience.
As previously stated, it's skill-based matchmaking that the Call of Duty community truly despises. It has ruined the fun for many players, especially those who choose to party up with friends that take things a little more casually. Because of the skill gap, your buddies will have to face significantly tougher online opponents, leaving you with the job of carrying the team on your shoulders. It has been a controversial topic within the community for some time now, but Black Ops Cold War really feels like it is bringing the argument to a head.
Elsewhere, the MP5 is completely overpowered and renders most other weapons useless, hit detection appears to be broken, aiming reticules are incorrect, reward screens display the wrong attachments, gun levelling is far too slow, and animations are a constant source of criticism. Oh, everyone hates the Miami map too.

"the MP5 is completely overpowered and renders most other weapons useless, hit detection appears to be broken"
So it's a Black Ops game then?
Good old CoD!
Never fails to generate a few headlines on release.
Surely there are some people who are bad online who are praising the system as they can actually get a few more kills?
@God_of_Nowt That's not really it, or at least not the majority of why people dislike CoD SBMM. Most people dislike it because of what was stated in the article above:
It makes partying up with people of a higher or lower skill than you, a nightmare. You get longer queue times and, somehow, unbalanced teams constantly. I try and play with my fianceé and it is just not fun for her at all, because she just gets farmed for killstreaks while I have to sweat up a storm like I'm trying out for eSports.
It would be a non-issue if they had a casual and competitive playlist but they don't, and I don't know if you know this, but most CoD multiplayer players are very casual and just want to have fun. They don't want to have to try hard after a hard day of work, they just want to be thrown into a match quickly for a bit of fun with friends.
It was never a "competitive" game for the vast majority despite playing against other people.
Black Ops Cold War is such a downgrade from Modern Warfare in every aspect.
The gameplay feels overly heavy and slow, with weapons being severely underpowered over overpowered.
The maps are terrible, worst i’ve ever played in any COD. Only 1 of the maps is ok, the rest are just awful.
SBMM in this is somehow much worse. MW was sort of balanced in some way despite SBMM but BOCW is just ridiculous. The first reddit post above is the exact experience.
Servers are also surprisingly poor this year with it takes ages to get into games, and then within there being significant lag (not just myself but entire squad).
Me and my friends all bought this years COD and last night switched it out for MW as we just couldn’t take it anymore.
The first video made me laugh. Sometimes you just have a streak of bad luck.
Glad I skipped this one.
Lol it didn’t really bother me that the matchmaking was broken in MW2019, and it won’t bother me with Cold War either.
I mean when we have a company that openly lets people use cheating hardware (Cronus Zen) it’s hard to take the competitive aspect seriously.
My advice is to find new lobbies after each match. There’s no need to quit matches halfway through but if you’re in a totally unbalanced lobby just look for a new one after the match. This is a double plus because if it places you in a lobby mid game you’re guaranteed to not get a loss stat.
I’ll be playing Cold War mostly in zombies with my fiancé and online with my brother. I could see myself un-installing the campaign portion after collecting the trophies for it.
As a casual player who plays with casuals, I'm okay with skill based matchmaking. I've won more matches and performed better than I otherwise would've. Sure skilled streamers like Shroud and Drdisrespect need to work harder to stay on top, but that's what they're paid to do. They can either adapt or go find another game to promote. Streamers and pros shouldn't get easy mode just because they don't want to work for their money.
I dont understand when people buy into a franchise that is a yearly release and complain about the same things ever year..weapons are over powered, match making is a joke,blah,blah,blah...wtf do you expect? That call of duty is somehow suddenly become perfect? Warzone is great but has its issues but does it stop me from enjoying it? Maybe stop buying it people..
I've been playing it on PS4 and haven't had any issues with it. Some games I do well, some games, not so well.
I'm having a lot of fun playing it. I like all the maps. Overall, no complaints from me to be honest.
I can smell Reddit + Call of Duty from here. It’s like a wave of overwhelming B.O. and Wotsit dust.
Thing is, all of this people complaining already bought the game, so why should Activision care anymore?
If only people would wait for reviews instead of jumping aboard right away every single year and then complain they got suckered, well, maybe they wouldn't get suckered.
I mean, maybe it's just me, but if I'm gonna plonk down hard earned cash for a game, I sure as hell wanna know that it's good beforehand. I may not like it in the end, but at least I'm guaranteed a functioning product.
@ScottyG You are automatically thrown into a new lobby after each match which is another complaint people have with this game.
I played quite a bit last night since they had a double XP day and I did notice the SBMM. A few games In would be crushing the other team then the next match was really sweaty. I also seemed to die alot to the MP5 too, it seemed that everyone was using that gun.
However people need to chill the game hasn't even been out for a week of course there is going to be some fine tuning. Especially with devs having to work from home due to COVID there will be problems and it will take a bit longer to fix. However if say here in a month or two the same problems are around then yes there is a reason to complain.
However though their probably won't be a fix for the SBMM and that is due to Activision not developers like Teryarch. Time and time again developers like Teryarch and Infinity Ward have said that they don't even know how the SBMM is coded. All they know is that a is supposedly to help new players not get stomped and the more cosmetics and crap you buy from the CoD store the easier a lobby will be for you. This is done to get people to buy CoD points and spend real money. Even head of Teryarch David Vonhdar has gone on record and said he doesn't like the SBMM system but unfortunately his hands are tied cause in the end it's Activision who signs his check.
I'll bet this is the same complaints players gave to Fortnite: Skill-based matchmaking means you cannot just dominate randos and you end up winning less games as the competition gets tougher.
I’m sure not alone when say I COULDN’T CARE LESS about the trials and tribulations Call of Duty players face
I didnt really like the beta. Im probably just going to skip BO this round.
Still think MW and warzone are the best cod has been in more than a decade
i was also running into the issue of playing against players that are way better than me just because i teamed up with my brother who's farther along in the multiplayer than i am.
these things always seem to work themselves out i'm sure it'll be fine after a while.
@God_of_Nowt I understand where your coming from, but when it comes to what cod games used to feel like, It was stringing together great clips of 4 or 5 enemies. In Cold War the game wants you to average 1 kill for every death. So what makes that fun then? It just becomes a rinse and repeat death cycle game
Other then changing device settings to usb as didn't work, has anyone figured out how to get into mission 3 cold war campaign. I can't figure out how to get past the controller bug at the beginning of the mission as soon as I exit the helicopter my controller disconnects.
