Rocket League has had quite the journey. It launched as a PlayStation Plus title, instantly became hugely popular, and has been through more changes than we can count. Licensed DLC cars, wacky new modes, massive updates, loot boxes, season passes, cross-play... The list goes on and on. Now, after everything, the game is moving to a free-to-play model.
From 23rd September 2020, you'll be able to play Rocket League on PS4 (and other platforms) free of charge — and yes, that means you don't need a PS Plus subscription to play it online. To celebrate the impending switchover, a frankly awesome cinematic trailer has been released, which you can watch above. We wish we could pull off an aerial goal like that.

Sounds good for those who like it, not for me though, even if it is now free.
I tried this game, even watched videos online... just don't get the appeal.
Unlike Fall Guys, Speedball and others which I love.
Can someone explain what's so great about it?
@themightyant I hate football not a sports fan at all, yet I do love a game of Rocket League from time to time. I wasn't initially a fan to begin with but once you get the basics down and start jumping off the walls and juggling the ball it's very rewarding when you score a goal. I haven't played in a while as I'm working my way through my backlog!
@themightyant The skill cap in rocket league is huge and the learning curve can be steep and daunting but the satisfaction of pulling off tough maneuvers/shots with my friends is second to none for me.

@themightyant as others have said, the skull ceiling is huge but the reward is fantastic. Rather than upgrading your car you upgrade yourself. To pull off some of the mechanics you'll need 100s (if not 1000s) of hours in the game but when it all clicks it's magic. Definitely a fantastic game to play with your friends. A good starting point is the why you suck at rocket League YouTube series by sunlesskhan. Good luck.
@themightyant Initially I thought it was OK. But the more you play, the more you improve. As @Liberty____1st wrote you do improve. Down in the lower levels you can have fun just trying to hit the ball which is harder that you rember. Once you are upto silver everyone can hit the ball so it's more about positioning and not ball chasing. In Gold you need to get good at aerials and guesstimating when you can run for boost. At Platinum you need tactics and a hell of a lot more as opponents Rob boost, tactically blow you up and have various points of attack. It's brilliant!

Yea, others have said as much already, but this game gets better the more you play it, because you will constantly will learn and see things you need to get better.
The combination of simplicity and a million ways to approach every situation makes this game stand out from so many other multiplayer games. I enjoyed my time with it, but some of the random players online were quite toxic, and then they introduced loot boxes, which made me give up on the game. I've no idea what the experience is like now.
@Kidfried Agreed on some of the randomers you get grouped with being unbearably toxic. So much easier to find nice people to group with where possible.
The loot boxes were overall non intrusive. They have since been replaced with blueprints. If you like the octane or one of the stock cars and are happy not chasing skins/aesthetics you can absolutely ignore them and just concentrate on the game.
I'm so done with Rocket League, it was fun for a while, but as a novelty, not a long term prospect imo.
@themightyant im not normally good at mp and i can't pull off alot of fancy moves consistently but in threes im diamond rank with my friends. Mainly because i found im much better at setting up goals rather than scoring them. Theres a real satisfaction to getting the ball past the opposite team and in a great position for your team mate to score. However you may enjoy doubles or solos more, or even the extra modes like hockey or rumble.
For sheer fun and the amount of hours I've put into this, it has to be up there in my top games of the generation. I still suck at it, mind
