Sony has yet to fully reveal the PlayStation 5. We know quite a bit about the console already -- and we've been given a good look at the PS5 DualSense controller -- but we're still waiting on the big next-gen showing. However, with the ongoing coronavirus situation undoubtedly upsetting PlayStation's plans, it's difficult to predict when the Japanese giant will make its move.
With that in mind, this latest rumour makes for some interesting reading. VGC reports that Sony was "recently" planning to have a full PS5 reveal in May 2020. This is according to an unnamed source, but given how reliable VGC tends to be, we're prepared to bet on this being legit.
But as exciting as it is to imagine seeing the PS5 next month, we'd advise against getting your hopes up. As mentioned, everything's up in the air due to the coronavirus, and it's entirely possible that Sony has already rescheduled or reworked this supposed PS5 reveal. After all, the company went and delayed The Last of Us: Part II indefinitely just a few weeks ago.
The rumour doesn't stop there, though. VGC also adds weight to claims that Microsoft has Xbox Series X "reveals" set for May. It could be that we're going to have the two next-gen consoles going head-to-head very soon, assuming that, again, plans haven't been altered.
In any case, it'll be fascinating to see how this all pans out. Sony has repeatedly said that the PS5 will still launch in holiday 2020 -- and we're only getting closer and closer to that release window. If Sony's sticking to its guns, then we're going to have to see the PS5 sooner rather than later.
Could May be the month? Do you think we'll actually see the PS5 in the next few weeks? Give us some predictions in the comments section below.

"Hey, Sony and MS might be revealing their consoles in May, or they might not because Corona!"
Wow, such insightful prediction, definitely article worthy.
With the current state of things, anyone could say whatever they want regarding the reveal, because if they're wrong, well, it's Corona's fault, not theirs, obviously.
@clvr Hey, when a reliable source says a PS5 reveal was recently planned for May, that's worth an article. It might still happen.
I think the ps5 will probably get fully reveal with release date ikely in June.
Just make the ****** presentation, coronavirus won't go anywhere in the next months, there's no point on waiting for the virus to just disappear magically tomorrow.
Make a "PS5 Reveal SoP" and that's it. Sony, stop being such a *****.
@makina Watch the language please, you've been warned twice now.
I think Sony might show off one of their ps5 launch exclusive games next month to keep the hype going into June console reveal.
Well...
I will wait until there is a picture of official PS5 machine without watching the presentation.
Just only care with Cartoonish Kiddie games i can play from first launch.
I really hope its May. We could all use something to be excited about right now. People are a bit on edge lately!
Just reveal it already. This virus is sticking around for a bit. Sheesh. Really losing my patience with Ryan and co.
@ShogunRok
Are you the PC police on push square? 😂 😂 😂 😂
@Chryssy75 i havent seen any rhyme or reason to who or what gets flagged. 🤔
If something don't happen soon, I'm gonna buy a metal detector instead. Tired of wondering and waiting.
Why does the media insist on calling it ‘coronavirus’, it’s Covid 19, Sony hasn’t got its PS5 plans in the air due to a cold...anyway I’d be very surprised if both consoles are actually put on sale this year due to the pandemic.
@ShogunRok yeah, but according to "sources" it should've happened in February too.
I mean, I know there's not a lot to cover in this period, but lately it's been basically milking the controller dry and a whole lot of rumormongering.
@S1ayeR74 coronavirus is a family to which COVID-19 belongs, and probably it's because the former rolls off the tongue easier than the latter, but that's just an educated guess.
@Nyne11Tyme @Chryssy75 More casual swearwords are usually okay if they're used sparingly, and not in a confrontational manner. But dropping f-bombs and other, er, vulgarities, is against the rules.
@Chryssy75 I believe he's one of the editors, so yeah, in a sense.
@clvr I'm not trying to be a dick, but since the controller reveal, we've published 106 different articles, not including DualSense content or rumours.
Granted, we're in a bit of a weird spot when it comes to news right now because everything's been wrecked by the virus. But it's still disingenuous to suggest that there's been nothing but DualSense and rumours recently.
@ShogunRok
So that's a yes then 😂😂😂.
@Chryssy75 I... Suppose it is.
@ShogunRok fair enough. I may have been overly harsh, I'll give you that.
That said, there's still been a lot of rumors here lately, and seeing the current climate and the very real possibility of them not coming true, you may have been a bit of overzealous.
May is late as it is. I need to know 6 months prior to launch
They should do it in may where everyones at home.
People impatient as ever.
@clvr We'll just have to wait and see. Like the article says, VGC is a very reliable source — it's fair to assume that there's at least some truth to this, or they wouldn't have published the story.
At least we'll know for sure soon enough.
It makes sense that they’d have been targeting May for a big blowout. I’m sure they’d still like to do it in May if it’s possible.
At the end of the day, the blowout is going to have to happen relatively soon if they’re still targeting Holiday. November is 7 months away now...
I think May would be a good time to revel, like others have said, people will be at home and it can be something to get excited about.
They should be able to put a presentation together while working from home and someone could probably take a 360°/3D video/image of the console for the presentation and website.
Most people are going to watch it on a screen anyway, so the reveal of say Horizon Zero Dawn 2, will be fine. Developers that were going to get up on a stage for this, can find a blank wall and set up a tripod in their home or whatever and record their presentation, then send it to Sony and they can piece it together.
When the presentation is over, they can set a website to go live with 360° images and articles of the different aspects of the console, with developer videos et cetera.
Edit: It will also be interesting to see what Quantic Dream's new engine demo will be like. We know they like building game engines to push the hardware and I've enjoyed their games.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the console is revealed when it hits stores ... literally. You'll just enter an electronics store and poof! There it is, sitting on a shelf.
How many people would be invited to a ps5 reveal event? 1000 maybe...the rest of the gaming world would watch a live stream which is no different to a digital reveal
Look at it this way: it gets more and more likely that people saying it for the next month get it right.
If they are going for November release, then I think they have announce something in May, 6-7 months from now really isn't that far away!
@clvr I know Covid 19 is a member of the ‘Coronavirus’ family hence my comment... and no Covid 19 is just as easy to say. Its official name is SARS-CoV-2. It was later named Covid 19 which relates to Coronavirus disease 2019, which thinking about it is the same as just calling it Coronavirus really....
Sony should consider an early reveal to gauge the demand for the PS5. This can help them estimate production.
@ShogunRok but surely this is the time to do the reveal!
All eyes will be watching, I'm amazed how many companies are missing this chance.
Nintendo have also revealed nothing this year so far I find it staggering.
microsoft will do the reveal first, they are in the driving seat now.
Nah, don't think so. Reckon it'll be later than this. Towards the end of summer probably. Xbox spend a lot of time doing promos during those months and they've already got the momentum so reckon Sony will go for one massive blowout much closer to release.
May makes sense to me. Reveal the console before E3 happens. Ubisoft and co. still like to talk about upcoming games during their E3 livestream or whatever they are doing. So it only makes sense Sony wants to reveal the console beforehand. I mean, if it's coming this year and they're sure of that, there's no point in delaying it any further, right?
I wish we could buy (and receive) the ps5 digitally.
I could see sony holding it back because you know that even if there were billions of roaming 20 foot man eating crocabears that are super smart and know how to build, maintain and use reversed engineered alien weaponry, hunting and eating every human in site, that if the ps5 released, people (myself included lol) would still go out to the store to try to snag one on release
microsoft have already revealed their console, so everyone is waiting for sony. but clearly there must be big problems in camp sony, since they have been all talk no show, cant blame it all on the corona.
@ShogunRok Bit of a stretch. The original article states "One person with knowledge of Sony’s plans".
We don't know who this person is, how knowledgeable they are, or whether they're reputable or even clued up on any level of truth involving this.
For the sake of argument, this person could of been anyone, or no one, dependant on whether this journalist had any integrity or not.
My point is, a rumour isn't worth the paper its written on, or you could just make up news whenever someone felt like it. Names, cited sources and facts are what I really deem as news-worthy, not conjecture, rumours and hearsay.
I do love this site, because it's well managed, and people have an open forum to speak their minds, in turn giving me this opportunity to say what I really think, in a constructive manner. I can also appreciate that it's slow moving news right now. But I'd still much prefer a poll, or an opinion based article regarding some games, than more conjecture based rumour articles that ultimately rarely amount to anything of value. Just my 2 cents.
XsX £549
Xs £299 (new half arsed XsX)
PS5 £449
@ShogunRok that's good to know. I always try to keep it PGish😄
It'd be cool if we got some news in May.
With everything cancelled due to the virus, we don't really have any concrete dates for potential info drops.
@Grindagger Again, VGC is a reliable source. If this was practically anyone else, we wouldn't be writing about it like this.
@ShogunRok Fair enough. I'm not familiar with VGC, was more interested in the dubious statement of it being someone "with knowledge".
I get that whomever that might be, doesn't want their name appearing all over the news, but it also doesn't really add any degree of noteworthy credance.
I suppose though if VGC are a gaming news source that rarely is wrong when it comes to these sort of articles, then I can get behind that.
Here is what Sony has said: "We will closely follow the release time line of PS4 with PS5". Mark Cerny Gave his talk about spec's and showed the PS4 controller on Feb 20 2013. The PS5 Spec talk and controller reveal was about a month and a half later on April 7 2020 than the PS4's.
The PS4 console was shown at E3 June 10 2013! I don't expect the PS5 to be shown until June 10 2020! It could be delayed up to a month and a half like the PS5 controller. However Sony will want to announce with and after Microsoft. I do not expect them to jump the gun on Microsoft at all. Sony will likely show the console and give the price in the same reveal.
Just make a special State of Play announcement anyway to feature PS5 and games lineup, it's not that hard to make it right though unless if Sony still wants a show with lots of people will attend then it ain't happening soon.
All these devs and companies might as well start setting up all their online presentations. this virus ain't gonna just disappear tomorrow.
Well it kind of has to be before stuff like the Ubisoft digital event and IGN Summer of Gaming so May seems like a safe guess for the proper PS5 reveal provided the plan is an online event.
How would the corona virus effect a digital reveal?? Makes no sense.
@Ken_Kaniff Because there's so much more that goes into planning and preparing something like this. Even if it is digital, they have to coordinate so many things globally, and it's more difficult to do that right now.
@get2sammyb I gotcha. I just figured the reveal was probably suppose to happen in Feb. So if they dont have this reveal in order by May 😬. I mean by then half the year will be about over and we still don't know what this thing looks like or what games are coming.
It's be about gosh-darn time, consarnit. We've seen the Xbox stuff come and go, but not much from Sony. What the flippity-flap Sony? Get off your rumps and give the people what they want, dagnabbit!!
I think they could still do it.They just do it online and they will be fine. Look at the numbers of views and likes/shares and all that that they got when they released the Controller info and pic on PSBlob, heck even just when they released the image for the logo. I think it will be a reaval video via PSBlog during the month of May, along with a price drop because that would be 6 months out from their release date of November which will be there "Holiday Release Window"
