The next games from the creators of The Last Guardian and Control will launch on the PlayStation 5, but they will not be published by Sony, as many had expected. The awkwardly named genDESIGN is helmed by legendary creator Fumito Ueda, who previously operated as part of Japan Studio before going independent in 2011. He continued to work with the PlayStation first-party through the completion of The Last Guardian, but has now decided to collaborate with Epic on his next title.
Finnish developer Remedy, meanwhile, was strongly rumoured to have entered a publishing deal with the platform holder – we’d even heard whispers about it from very reliable sources. It too has decided to sign with Epic, alongside Inside creator Playdead. To be fair, the deal sounds extraordinary: all three teams will have 100 per cent of their development costs covered, but will retain the rights to any intellectual property they create, and will earn at least 50 per cent of the profits.
Crucially, they’ll also have full creative control. Frankly, it’s the kind of deal that Sony would struggle to compete with, as it typically demands IP ownership for any of the titles it publishes. Despite the games being confirmed for the PS5, though, the PlayStation fanbase has been fidgety since today’s announcement, as many had expected genDESIGN and Remedy to release exclusively on the aforementioned format.
Of course, these aren’t the only developers on the Earth, and we’re confident that fans will feel satiated once Sony announces its next-gen console properly in the very near future. In the meantime, perhaps we should all appreciate the fact that three very talented independent teams are getting the support they need.

Considering Epic have all the money in the world and like offering tempting deals i'm not surprised. Can't say i have an issue with this, if Epic are funding these games then fair enough and as long as they keep MTX on the down low i don't really care who they partner with.
What even is this "article"?
Basically just fanning dumb console warrior discussion. This site has really declined over the past year or so...
Oop the fidgets are setting in! I'm spinning!
Don't care as long as great games get made. As long as they come to PS5, then I'm happy.
It was me, wasn't it?
This is the only site I’ve came across that makes it seem like Sony fans give a dang about this.
No one is angry because no one cares about these tra*h games.
This almost certainly means full EGS exclusivity on PC for these games. Which, to be fair, is totally their right: this is a way better strategy for everyone involved than moneyhatting publishers and poaching eminent Steam releases in order to secure temporary exclusivity on their launcher.
I mean, what even is this article?
EGS timed-exclusive & will come to next-gen consoles.
If anything let Epic spend their Fortnite money on expanding the market.
I'll admit that I'm a little disappointed that Sony didn't tie Remedy down but at least their games are still coming to PlayStation.
This sucks a lot, not directly in the console war but rather in the exclusitivity war. If all games were multi-plat you would easily jump into Xbox and Nintendo. Yes, they have more studios and it’s about talents, but reading about how devs leave Naughty dog because of work conditions, the future looks worrying.
It seems to align with the strategy of not caring much about exclusives that Sony is clearly heading into to.
I'm sure the games will be released for ps5 so it's okay I think.
I think any angst over this will be because there are those fans who like to have a little bit more “exclusivity” in their talking points when they’re fighting the console wars.
Great deal for Developers and SONY gets it anyway. Nothing here to be upset about.
Why would you play Mario on the switch if it was available on PlayStation?
Actually. Im happy Remedy make the deal with Epic, so Sony will not waste money on that. I dont like Remedy's IPs.
Free money to spend on some Japanese Studio or BluePoint.
genDESIGN has historically tapped into Sony first party resources in a similar way to Kojima productions. I wonder whether epic has similar resources they can tap into. Otherwise we might be in for an even longer wait then between shadow of the colossus and the last guardian.
The other two have always worked with the publisher that gives them the best deal. So should continue to be able to make great games when supplied with an appropriate level of funding.
Don't see the big deal here, but I'm looking at it objectively and not with the Sony can do wrong goggles many here like to wear. Sony has been dropping the ball a lot since Kaz Hirai went into retirement and Jim Ryan took control in PlayStation. But beyond that, even if everything was perfect if I run a third party company I'm not signing a deal with Sony. I'd want ownership of my IP and I'd want my company's game on as many platforms as possible. Sony could offer the latter but it wouldn't offer IP ownership and that's the big thing.
Yup, Remedy got offended when their Control underperformed both in terms of sales and performance on Playstation 4 so they took their business elsewhere. Don't blame them, but in my opinion their games have gone downhill since Max Payne 2. As for Ueda-san, I liked TLG and that's it. Didn't like Shadow of the Colossus or Ico so I don't care. It is my belief the exclusives will simply come from new makers, and not the usual suspects
@Gamer83 Of course Sony would like control of IPs it like a daft business move if your company puts millions into projects but then have no control over what to do with it after.
@Gamer83
'Sony can do wrong goggles'?
Sony cant do no wrong goggles. However Ms can do no good goggles, I'm sure. 🤔
@AdamNovice
And if my company is developing the game I want the IP. Goes both ways, if Epic is offering that and Sony isn't, the choice is obvious.
Does anyone put remedy in the top...10 of 3rd party devs?. I ask not playing control but all of their other offerings.
@Gamer83 Not every company will offer that though, most will rather do it in house. At the same time, going with Epic isn't cut and dry as you think. Yes it'll be on multiple platforms but that doesn't guarantee sales, likely not been on Steam will hurt it, plus it's doubtful how much marketing Epic will stump up, at least with Sony they would probably make the game a bigger deal then Epic would.
So let me get this straight: you write an article stating that fans are mad over this, provide no evidence, and cite another Push Square article on the subject as a source? Seriously?
Lol no ones “fidgety” about this apart from these sensationalist headlines that Push Square keeps cranking out.
@AdamNovice
Sony hasn't always been perfect with the advertising of its own first party games, to be fair it does depend on if the title looks like it will be something with mass appeal or not. I'd imagine Epic will do just what Sony would, if any of these games look like they could hit big a lot of marketing muscle will be thrown behind it. From what I've read, it seems like going with Epic was the wise choice, the games will get on more platforms than going with Sony and they keep the studios keep the IPs, I'm interested to see what they come up with and how it all plays out in the end.
@makina
I like Remedy's games but I think you're right that Sony made the right call not to buy it. It owns several studios that do what Remedy does, only better and Remedy's games don't tend sell big or move consoles. I said when the rumors were floating around that Sony would be wiser to buy Insomniac (its games have, more times than not, done well for Sony and move consoles) and as a PlayStation fan was happy to see that was the choice that got made.
I just like to play games. I also like it when others get to play games on their platform of choice.
Isn’t three studios getting full backing, plus retaining their IP, a win for every gamer?
This site is getting more like the daily express blizzard forecasts every day.
Well, 'fidgety' is an improvement over 'butthurt' at least so there is that? Still sad to see the eagerness to stir the pot though and making an issue when there isn't one.
Sounds ok considering the games will come to the PS5. SONY can't own all the brilliant developers out there
I don’t really see the issue with Remedy doing this since it’s stated that the games will come to PS5.
great its going to be on more formats other than just playstation
It's about time that all this exclusivity nonsense stopped. All it does is hamper games development within the sector, and causes divisions amongst gamers.
It's looking like developers are responding to their customers, who generally don't care about platform exclusives. The organisations which promote this exclusivity nonsense, only have their own interests at heart, at the expense of the wider gaming community. It's a marketing/business practice which should have died 20 years ago.
@Hengist Sure, go tell Nintendo.
@Gamer83
>It owns several studios that do what Remedy does but better
Absolutely agree. I want Sony to acquire a different type of studio, specially Japanese studios, thing like Platinum, FromSoftware or Atlus... Yeah, i know, none of those are real possibilities, but you get the point.
@makina
Yeah, most of the Japanese studios worth buying are pretty big though. The only two I can think of that might be able to be purchased for a reasonable price would be Mistwalker or Grasshopper. Both studios that have produced some good games, to be fair. Not on the level of a Platinum or From Soft, but still some really good stuff.
Meh. ‘Console wars’ people are some of the more pathetic.
@PC_Peasant impotent trolling 2/10
Did we? I checked on Reddit and other forums and there is actually more positivity on this news than what you had written.
@SaikoWaifu2003 True that, suck as it may look but I prefer Epic do this than what they did in the past.
I guarantee 0.01% of fans are “fidgety” or even care about this. This is just badly written journalism or clickbait.
This is virtually a no news story to begin with. The developers (a non exclusive Sony developer to begin with) aren’t making games for one platform they are making them for all. How is that bad? The stupid thing out of this is they weren’t even a developer that was exclusive to Sony previously lol. What the hell Push Square? Not the first time you've wrote ridiculous headlines like this lol
Wow this quarantine thing is bringing out the trolls. I have seen a lot on social media of platform fanatics of all sides trolling which I don't get. Truth is, I don't like epic and their philosophy but if they are giving good devs funding and independence, you can't blame them. besides, Epic games are typically PC exclusives. Until epic release their own console (you heard it here first).
@makina 'Sure, go tell Nintendo.'
Well, I'm not inclined to go and tell anyone. However, I think that I covered them, and others, when I wrote... 'The organisations which promote this exclusivity nonsense'. The keyword being 'organisations'.
Evidence for this 'fidgety' feeling ????
The deal itself is insanely good, and one that no independent studio could afford to turn down, especially for studios like Remedy who haven't had an out-and-out hit game (sales-wise) in quite a while.
Good on Epic for nurturing and supporting all three studios and i look forward to seeing what they create and having the choice on which format to purchase them on when they release
