This came out of nowhere: Sony has just announced the DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment. This new add-on for your PlayStation 4 controller essentially gives you an extra two buttons, which you can fully customise. The paddle-style inputs can be programmed to any command on the DualShock 4 to grant you faster, or easier, access.
The gadget connects to your PS4 controller via the headphone jack and will clip into place, with the two paddles sitting along the back of the pad. Between these new inputs is a fancy circular screen you can use to program the buttons. You'll be able to store up to three profiles, and switch between them by double-clicking the screen. Additionally, if you're worried about this thing using up the headphone jack, you can plug your cans into the bottom of this device instead.
It's a pretty tight design for an add-on like this, and that's to be expected of a Sony-made peripheral. Yes, this is an in-house product PlayStation has created to allow players a little more flexibility. Quite why Sony has never produced its own full-blown pro / elite controller for PS4 is a mystery, but this effectively turns your regular DualShock 4 into one.
It will retail for $29.99 / €29.99, and will be released early in 2020 -- 23rd January in North America, and 14th February in Europe. What do you think of the Back Button Attachment? Is this something you're interested in at this point in the generation? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

That is pretty neat.
I can think of a few instances that could come in handy.
Was going to buy a SCUF this month, thank you Sony for saving me some cash.
Very interesting announcement.
I hope the Dualshock 5 comes with two 'paddle' buttons as standard or perhaps this will just work with the new controller too...
I think it's tooooo late. Or is it? Depends if the ps4 controller can be use on the 🎮 PS5
Just what the DS4 battery needs. OLED screens!
If only they had done something like this for the vita 😔
Looks good though
This looks to be in direct competition with the BROOK Marine as well. I wonder if the price will be as competitive.
@EddieGreenheart the Marine Adapter is £55 and the Dualshock 4 Back Button is £30.
This could be good for Sony.
"The gadget connects to your PS4 controller via the headphone jack"
Aaaaa, how can you use wired headphones if the jack is occupied?
For me, that is a deal killer.
@Svark Might want to finish reading the article before commenting.
@Svark
Read the article again? 🤔
@Svark the video shows you can use a wired headset via a 3.5mm jack at the bottom of the adaptor.
As @Tasuki said, read the article first mate.
@Svark watch the video one more time.
@Svark "Additionally, if you're worried about this thing using up the headphone jack, you can plug your cans into the bottom of this device instead."
About time. I've been dying for one of these. I wasn't willing to pay the outrageous prices of the SCUFF or other modded brands and all of the weird official 'pro' controllers aren't as good as the DS4 imo.
I think this is a really cool alternative for people that don't want to shell out for a £100+ third party pro controller or a Scuff controller. I'll definitely be picking this up.
Would have been nice to have something like this years ago. As it stands it’ll be coming out ten months before it’s obsolete, unless it is somehow also compatible with the DS5. Cool idea, if they come out with a DS5 version I’ll pick it up immediately.
Makes the DS4 look like it has a penis.
@Enuo Well it is reaching puberty now
My only concern is does this eat up more battery?
I also wonder if this is a precursor to the DS5?
Why now ? Sony, you are too late. No thanks. People who will buy it are dumber than I thought.
Not a bad idea, but the DS4 already has horrendous battery life. Not sure I need an accessory with a screen reducing it even further.
I bet the Dualshock 5 will also have these reamapeable back buttons, and this gadget is for the PS5 compatibility for the DS4.
Needs more paddles, after a year of using a Scuf Impact with 4 paddles I couldn't go back to using a pad with less. Great intro to a pro type pad for anyone looking to invest in one though.
Oh yes. I really like this 👍
What about the ds5 though. Guess we ll have more info by then
Yay now i can be a 'pro' gamer like ninja. I just need a 500$ chair.
@kyleforrester87 OLED are actually pretty good on battery since any of the black area is effectively using no electricity. It looks like a SUPER low resolution screen too, so b/w OLED is probably about as efficient as it gets in terms of a display (except maybe e-ink)
When I read pro controller I was assuming we already had that the pro model of the consoles controller with the light bar on the touchpad
Cool, but $30 is a little much $20 would have been great.
Too bad it doesn’t look like it’d work with my charging dock so I couldn’t keep it on while charging.
Near idea. Though I already have the Astro pro controller which has 2 back buttons already, I hope this is a standard on the dualshock 5 but we'll see
is this just like button mapping or u can also assign commands like for example..let's say, I want to instantly open specific menu in game by one button click?
SO COOL so that's what that port was for on the controler next to the headphone jack I'm so going to buy this
@Ridwaano I bet it can, you can even use a DS4 on a PS3.
wow, very nice. Both my HORI Split Pro and Steam Controller have the 2 extra back programmable buttons. Love them
I will end up buying this for sure.
@azoreseuropa Why i wont buy a PS4 on day one i always wait a 6 months too a year after the problems are sortrd out. And still i wont sell my PS4 MHW Pro.
