A complete lack of new software is taking its toll on PlayStation this summer in Japan. The latest software charts are dominated by Nintendo titles, with PlayStation being completely absent in the top 10. The only PlayStation 4 title worthy of mention in the top 20 is Detroit: Become Human, which is still slowly creeping towards 100,000 copies.
On the hardware side of things, PS4 and PS4 Pro sales did see a relatively small increase, but as always, it's going to take a blockbuster release to drag Sony's console back into its usual territory.
Hardware sales

OMG PLAYSTATION IS DEAD.
Woah Taiko no Tatsujin just shot up there huh?
Octopath Traveler also sticking around despite nowhere stocking the damn thing.
And the eternal Splatoon 2, the ultimate barometer of longevity in sales. At least in Japan. Everywhere else it's GTAV.
What's the next big Japanese blockbuster for the system? Shenmue 1+2? Spider-Man? SNK Heroines? Call of Duty?
A bundle of recycled Wii u titles on the switch. Japanese figures don't matter to playstation but it matters to Nintendo. Everyone has its share.
@lixei32 I think that says a lot about the quality of those games to a lot of people. Its no different than say, PS3 remasters doing well on PS4, which has happened...a lot.
I mean I may not think highly of the Wii U library, in fact I think it was pretty crap, it does make an excellent supplement to the true exclusive stuff like Splatoon 2 and now Octopath Traveller.
Honestly is there any point in keeping track of the Japanese charts anymore?
@viciousarcanum Look at it this way. They could be like NintendoLife and ignore the UK Charts.
Or Xbox and never tell us unit sales of hardware.
At least Nintendo was upfront with Wii U numbers til the end. Nothing wrong in reporting a less than shiny situation. It shows dedication and facing the perceived faults.
I dont see any faults, just that PS4 has seemingly plateued after MHW given how catastrophically fast sales died for that game and the hardware a month a later
@Knuckles-Fajita I bought a Wii u 5 days ago to be fair and am collecting the roughly 20 exclusive titles the system had. Nintendo only titles. To be fair for 150 euro I got 5 games and the console and 2 extra joypads pretty good deal. I bought it for Zelda but Mario donkey toad and yushi are also good fun. The switch is expensive will get it in further years by the line although the price of 230 euro with games was pretty tempting. Anyway have a lot to look forward to in the coming months and have to control my expenses since I'm also waiting for two Ronaldo shirts to arrive.
Nintendo games, nintendo games everywhere.
But look at the bright side- at least Japan seems to be getting tired of NGB already.
@NintendoFan4Lyf PS4 Pro makes an excellent space heater from what I hear, so in Winter you may actually be able to play some of the holiday blockbusters, AND not need to use your central heating. Win win there!
@Tsurii Xenoblade Chronicles X (My favourite game period), Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario Maker, Pikmin 3, Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush....then I think that's it?
@Tsurii Not exclusive anymore since now they made the switch. But nontheless I counted a good 16. For a console that spent approx 4 years in the market that s miserable btw.
@Tsurii I gave it a chance, but they made a bunch of really dumb decisions in terms of game design, and I haven't played any other Paper Mario game, so I'm not one of those TTYD fans.
I'm surprised the Switch is selling that much in Japan I know they love handhelds because of portability and price, but Switch is expensive and not a true portable console not to mention that while some of those games are great others are bad or mediocre at best it's like they been brainwashed to buy any kind of game that comes to the Switch regardless of quality as long as it's the new game for the Switch
Well, given that 90%+ of Octopath's retail shipment was bought up in the first three days, it's no surprise that the sales crashed.
@Knuckles-Fajita I'd like to see the Zelda remasters get ported to the Switch as well.
Cant say i'm surprised by the Switch doing so well, even when I was over in Tokyo pre-Switch, Mobile, Gameboy and Vita playing was prevelent whenever i used public transport, so the Switch fits perfectly into the convenience required for the market and Nintendo are being rewarded for putting out quality software with their hardware too..
@Ralizah Yeah that's true. Wind Waker and TP. I mean I dont like traditional 3D Zelda, but, for the fans.
@Octane I own but have not played TTYD, and I prefer Colour Splash to at least Paper Mario 1. Super is still my favourite though. I just found PM to be slow and boring when using turn based combat like that. The cards at least get me to think.
@Tsurii Oh yeah, Star Fox Zero, the only Star Fox game I've managed to enjoy because to hit an enemy you dont need to fly directly into their flight path and line of fire to hit them.
May as well bring Star Fox Guard too.
@Knuckles-Fajita Your probably hear wrong because that was the Switch that gets so hot and the fans get very loud that you can even use the system as a hairdryer
Interesting.
I'm not sure I've heard much actually good about Octopath Traveller other than how it looks.
@GKO900 I dont hear my Switch fans much, and its on my desk right next to me.
The PS4, on a shelf in the middle of the room though, that beast makes noise.
Also I dont know what hairdryer you use that has an incredible short range 1.5 inch grill.
@KALofKRYPTON the story apparently. No world ending threat. Also the way jobs work, the combat flow, difficulty, freedom to go with who and where you want, so on so forth.
@GKO900 If your Switch is getting that loud, there's something wrong with it. Mine never gets loud.
@NintendoFan4Lyf @Knuckles-Fajita The character loadout was a stand out in one of the reviews I read (might have been the Kotaku one) - that you have this disparate band of characters with literally nothing in common, not even a common goal, yet the 'goody two-shoes' characters are off on thieving quests in the same party.
Detroit should get to 100k now, which is a good result for that game. Also worth mentioning that the PS4 is up year-over-year so far; Japan just isn't its market anymore.
It's kind of sad that most japanese games sells better in worldwide compared to japan, japan market can not sustain 3rd party AAA games anymore, there's only 3 3rd party games on the top 10 list. 3rd party games is so dead if they depend on japanese market and nintendo, thanks god for playstation worldwide reach
@NintendoFan4Lyf No thanks, I like my 4k machine and good graphics, playing switch on my 4k tv gave me migraine, can't wait for ps5
@NintendoFan4Lyf
It sounds more like a disconnect of mechanics and characters to be honest. Why bother having a coterie of characters to play as in an RPG if they don't actually interact or complement each others' story thread.
From the Kotaku review: "Some of these stories are entertaining, others trite, but they’re always independent. They never intersect or share common ground. To buy that these eight adventurers would team up, putting aside their own motives to help each other out, requires a suspension of disbelief well beyond what most video games ask of the people who play them. Why would a hardened thief spend so much of his time hanging out with a goody-two-shoes healer? It’s never quite explained."
Don't mean to be slamming the game too much, as I say, it looks great and the mechanics are sound - that's plenty enough for me most of the time. Just surprising that its charting so well.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Ps5 will be a powerhouse console using cell 2 and emotion engine 2 😛
@viciousarcanum in a word NO
@Knuckles-Fajita ''at least get me to think'' I don't want to give the game that much credit. The card system is incredibly simple, and I would've liked to see something a little more complex, something that goes beyond the difference of hammer and jump.
I feel if Sony cared all they’d have to do is court exclusivity if they want the Japanese to get at the PS4/PS5 But because of the West & the fact Sony currently has more PS4s sold in Japan than Switch & all Japanese devs have to dev something for PlayStation as much as Nintendo systems if anything moreso. Sony can just relax & focus outside of Japan. I can see Ghosts of Tsushima selling in Japan possibly.
@wiiware I wonder if that means Sony will be essentially going after the PC Market as well w such power. Is it possible to even make this console for a time more powerful than even the top level Gaming Rigs out there today and can PS5 even be future proofed for 8K Gaming?!
@KALofKRYPTON I don't really see why it's so surprising that a goody two-shoes would team up with a thief. If you're on this big, important voyage, and you need the help of allies to defeat enemies, are you REALLY going to jeopardize your pilgrimage by policing the actions of a thief? People overlook immorality all the time in the service of the greater good.
Anyway, just think of them as a band of people who have teamed up to survive as they pursue their own goals instead of an adoptive family or friends and I doubt it'll pose any issues for you.
@Ralizah Because even if they do - the story plays out as if they didn't, largely as if the rest of the party isn't even there anyway.
Anyway, I'm off to play Raiden V #storymatters
@Jriibz given free with cereal boxes:)
@GKO900 I'm not quite sure why you say switch is not a true portable? I use mine undocked the majority of the time, and considering I travel a lot for work, I often take it with me and use on the train. I can't see how this isn't portable?
And pointing out that some games are bad or mediocre at best is something you could point at any console.
@Knuckles-Fajita I thought NL posted UK charts?
Sony should dropkick Japan and focus on the West.
@Knuckles-Fajita Did Sony piss you off or a you a little crybaby?
We've been told for a number of years now that mobiles and handhelds will be the biggest markets for games in general. Big expensive gaming PCs and consoles are probably not that attractive to a large number of newcomers to gaming, especially those who haven't grown up with these systems.
The Switch was only launched in 2017. The PS4 on the other hand has been around since 2013, that's a 4-year difference. So taking just a snapshot from two diverse timelines is not a good way to evaluate these two systems.
Yet I don't want to discount the fact that Nintendo seems to have done a really good job with the Switch. Credit to them, for sure.
@Flaming_Kaiser With reference to what exactly?
@Dodoo Depends if there is something to talk about.
What's this? A Japanese chart? Irrelevant!!
Would you like to buy a can of can't...
@Wraggadam Well to me the console it's too big and inconvenient especially if you try to take it somewhere you really need a case to protect the system that was not the case with the 3DS even the XL could fit in my pocket and with its clamshell design you never had to worry about any scratches on the screen
And while it's true that the others consoles have bad games I don't see any of those games in any chart unlike the Japanese chart that it's only buying Nintendo games this time it's like they only want to support Nintendo games especially Japanese ones
@Knuckles-Fajita but. Like you said ps3 remasters. Different to wii u ports to the switch just to have a library of software on the thing.
@NintendoFan4Lyf if you haven't the time for the pro, I'm sure you won't have the time for the switch either so how is the switch more convenient? A lot of cars have both convenience and power. The pro is poweful enough for me and its also convenient because I play it
Japan have completely different gaming taste to the west. Plus ps4 and xbox consoles are bigger than some of their houses.
Is this sales over a period of a month? A week? There is nothing indicating the time period.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I get ya. Have to remember not everyone has a dedicated TV for gaming
Xbox game sales are going strong.
@GKO900 just because it needs a case, doesn't mean it isn't a portable. Popping it in a protective case isn't a great inconvenience, plus gives you a little space for game cards etc.
Plus your argument about bad games is disproven by the chart, whete nut ine of the switch games on there is objectively bad, whereas a couple of the pS4 ones on there are either bad or mediocre (new Gundam breaker scored a 2/10 on here and sat at an average of 43 on metacritic. And The Crew 2 was a 6/10 on here and sitting at an average of 64. Looking at the switch list, there is only kirby star allies, and labo that may be sitting lower down in the scores.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I totally get that. That's why I always find time to game on my vita while the ps4 gets no playtime for weeks sometimes.
@Wraggadam My point is if the system is already too big adding the case it's not gonna help things either that's why I said it's not a true portable console and it's not convenient
And I agree that those games are not great it just goes to show their bad taste in games lately, especially when God of War is available and probably the GOTY 😝
Don't forget the Japanese & Western markets are very different. And not forgets it's not long till Red Dead 2 & Shenmue 1&2 Hd and many other mind blowing games. Will they all trade in their switch then i wonder.
Wait until Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out, since the Xbox is a rarity in Japan the PS4 copy will clean house lol
@Luna-Harmony
I doubt Shenmue 1 or 2 would make a Switch owner trade in their system for "remastered" Dreamcast games. Red Dead 2, will most likely be good, but after seeing how Rockstar handled GTA V my confidence is a little shaken. Also I don't think the target audience of any Rockstar game has ever been a Nintendo fan
@Mad
Microsoft was in the top 10 with Minecraft lol
@Bamf
Yes the PS4 Slim and the Xbox One X are monsters (rolls eyes). Also kudos on the most racist comment in this thread
