Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, had a particularly busy 2016 as he wrapped up production of Nintendo Switch and Wii U title Breath of the Wild – but he did make time for one particular PlayStation 4 game, as revealed to Game Informer magazine.
"I was too busy in 2016, so I couldn't play a lot of games [laughs], but I did play The Last Guardian," he said. "[Director Fumito] Ueda and I go back, so when he completed that game he sent a copy to me. It was actually a really busy time so I shouldn't have been playing the game, but I just couldn't resist, and it was really good."
Aonuma clearly has good taste, because if there's one game we'd argue was essential last year, it'd be the one involving Trico.

He and Shuhei Yoshida should bow their heads in shame. You are not allowed to enjoy your competition's games!
@Gamer83 Yeah, how dare developers enjoy the work of their peers. That's unheard of and should be illegal. Fans would never do such thing. They should be flinging mud!
Or you know, its not the 90s anymore. Even Sony has slowed down on the ego trip from earlier in the generation with sales numbers every week.
"but I just couldn't resist, and it was really good."
Aonuma said before laughing his head off and holding back tears chortled "I nearly fooled you there lol it was total sh£$."
Fixed it for you.

You know I was being sarcast right? But since you brought it up, I'll always prefer the 90s and the way companies went at eachother. The disdain between Sega and Nintendo made for some great back and forth, I miss those days.
The producer of Wii U title Breath of the Wild took the time to play PS3 title The Last Guardian.
@Gamer83 There's enough ugliness in the way fanboys treat other fanboys. I find it very refreshing that Nintendo and Sony bigwigs can openly admire and enjoy eachother's output... especially since I'm a fan of both.
I mean, mommy Nintendo will always be my favorite, but I like to spend the weekends with daddy Sony as well.
@Gamer83 I know, I was playing along.
I love both sides here. I just find it mind blowing that what I stated, is what happens despite companies being amicable.
And I like everyone to get along, so mud flinging between companies isn't a good thing to me, I find it rather abrasive.
@BLP_Software
It's just competition, I really don't see anything wrong with taking shots at the other side, as long as its kept reasonable. The dislike between some companies in the 90s is part of why I believe we got such great games.
Shows that these guys are gamers at heart.
Haha so that's why it took so long for Zelda to be completed! Here I was thinking the game was actually done in 2016 for WiiU and they couldn't release it because it would've cut into Switch sales!
@Ralizah Sega genesis was my favorite before being a PlayStation fan.streets of rage best Sega franchise and games.Sega genesis legendary console
@get2sammyb hey Sammy today PlayStation Ireland.say that crash bandicoot is a ps4 exclusive.I told you since day 1 .
@Gamer83 I don't know. I kind of think back then it was better, but personally, it led to a lot of being bullied because the companies did it, so the fans went beyond. From a personal standpoint, I cant agree with it, as it rubs off, and humans can be despicable creatures.
On the other hand, I would say with the exception of the curbstomping of E3 2013, things have been rather tame by Sony. I agree the competition between the two console makers is healthy for the most part, its the fans who tend to take that a little too far. Not often, but it happens and it becomes reflective of the attitude.
I think its why I dislike Shawn Layden. He doesn't do humble, he only does smug, which is not a healthy thing to do when the industry changes so rapidly and humility is greatly respected.
@playstation1995 We'll see. 😉
@BLP_Software But Shawn Layden's been in the industry since 1995 so he must be able to coe with any changes just fine.
@playstation1995 I only owned a Genesis during that era of gaming. Never knew what I was missing out on with the SNES until much later in my life. Still, some great games on that system: Phantasy Star II and IV, Road Rash 2, Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball (still my favorite pinball game), Comix Zone, Toejam and Earl, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Streets of Rage II, Shinobi III, Golden Axe, Ristar, etc. etc.
I was slightly disappointed because I thought he was going to say The Last of Us, my favorite PlayStation game. Oh well, maybe I should look into The Last Guardian at some point.
Don't be surprised if there's a huge beast you can train and be best friends with in copy cat, Aonuma's game now.
The man has good taste! Going back through The Last Guardian at the moment while waiting for the new Zelda, and it's just an achingly beautiful and fantastic experience. Wonder what kind of game they would make together if they teamed up?
Well in terms of overall "spirit" there is a very slight connection between the two titles.
@Giygas_95 That was the title I was fearing he may say; but I had a feeling he'd go for something with a little more "whimsical charm".
The gaming market, particularly console, has changed since the 1990's. Most gamers are older, not so much kids arguing about which one was best because their parents could only afford one or the other (go Team Nintendo).
To be honest, most consoles outside of Nintendo's in this and the last gen are pretty much just PC boxes.
Even if Aonuma likes it I will be waiting for it to hit $20.
I thought he liked horizon zero dawn since it's like ps4 zelda.
The Last Guardian always reminded me of a sort of game Nintendo would make tbh.
While playing through The Last Guardian, I couldn't help but think that I wish it was on a Nintendo system. The graphics would have been worst, but they would have fixed the horrible camera & control issues that I experienced while playing through the game. Oh well, it was memorable and I couldn't put it down once I started it.....I just wanted to spike my controller into the floor on multiple occasions because the issues I had.
I still haven't played it I thought Ico and Shadow of Col were average not really my thing. So thinking to avoid. I would have picked The Witcher3, GOW 3, FFX15, DMC, or NBA2k17 since he didn't have a lot of time to spare 😀
@Rudy_Manchego but way easier to use and don't have to worry about Ram video cards and the other Pc stuff that I'm clueless about lol!
@Giygas_95 that's another excellent one!
@smythelove I don't know... I mean there are a lot of cables with PSVR! Just kidding...
@Rudy_Manchego lol I haven't played VR yet but I did read about that in the reviews.
