There's no doubt that the PlayStation 4 is an extremely social system, but sometimes we all crave a little alone time. Fortunately, with firmware update v3.50, Sony has introduced the ability to appear offline. But how do you change your status? Well, it's quite simple really.
1. Navigate to your PS4 profile
From the PS4's main menu, push up to reach the top layer of the user interface, and scroll to the icon with your avatar named 'Profile'. Select it with the X button.
2. Change your Online Status
On your profile page, beneath your avatar, you'll see a box named 'Online Status'. Select it and another menu will pop out. Choose 'Appear Offline'. If this is your first time using the feature, you'll be prompted about how it all works. Once you've okayed that, you'll notice that the icon next to the top of your username will change from a blue circle to a red circle with a cross through it. This is to symbolise that you're appearing offline.
3. Go back online
Once you're finished feeling anti-social, repeat steps one and two, selecting the option 'Online' as your 'Online Status' instead. A blue circle will appear next to your username to confirm the change.

It can also be done when you go to switch off the PS4. Its good that they added the volume controls for headphones on the exit screen as well. Now easy to access.
The only reason I would want to appear online is if I need to speak with someone or game with them. I do agree a lot less people will appear online but if you are playing the same game as a friend you might still appear online to them in game.
I always thought the PS4 had this already. I use it every now and then on Xbox One.
So, someone could play Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3 without getting judged? Not me of course.
This will come in handy when watching a movie on Netflix or something, getting notifications throughout a movie is pretty annoying.
Good to see Sammy made friends with Scooby doo. Now I understand why you want to appear off line. Shagggy doooo wowowo scwooby snack (sad whimper).
So from now on, we don't have to hesitate to watch, you know.
But what happen when we achieved a trophy? It will be recorded on your trophy list anyway.
