We've started talking about Game of the Year here at Push Square Towers, but we're keeping our plans under wraps for the time being. Geoff Keighley's annual Game Awards ceremony is mere weeks away at this point, though, and we already know the nominees for the most prestigious gong. Writing on Twitter, Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has backed Bloodborne to win the top award.
The executive's biased, of course, seeing as Sony helped bring the repulsive action role-playing game to market – but it's definitely in with a shot against The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Super Mario Maker, and Fallout 4. It's going to be close, though, isn't it? Yoshida also backed fellow PlayStation 4 exclusive Until Dawn to win the Best Narrative award. Considering it's apparently been a bad year for first-party releases, the Japanese giant sure has scooped a lot of nominations, eh?

From what I've played so far it has to be the Witcher 3. However I still have to give Fallout 4 a good going over.
Witcher 3 with Fallout 4 as a close second IMO.
Lol, when Demon Souls came out he played like 30 minutes of it and supposedly said something in the line of: "what kinda cr*p game is this?", and he later refused bringing it Westwards. He since then apologized of course, but him going from hating the series to praising it every opportunity he gets, must feel so good for Miyazaki- San.
We have similar tastes it seems
@Boerewors there's probably quite a few people who did the same thing. It's a very obtuse game, not to mention the fact that- even for the year it was released- it wasn't exactly a looker.
Thankfully we got a release over here as the souls series is one of my favourites.
On topic, I'd back what Shu is saying here. While I loved Witcher 3, it took about 3 months of patches to get it running properly. CD Projekt Red did a phenomenal job, and it's an excellent game, but for that reason I would give Bloodborne the edge on that.
MGS V while enjoyable suffered greatly from poor pacing and the ludicrous omission of some essential late story. I won't elaborate here, but it's clear that the game was butchered by k*nami. Not to mention the pointless, tacked on, FOB nonsense and microtransactions.
@Johnnycide
I liked BB the first time around, but it wasn't without its technical flaws! The loading times were abysmal and it had some really bad framerate problems. I actually regret not waiting a few months before playing it, because when I finished it I didn't feel the urge to keep op playing and even gave my copy away.
A couple of weeks ago it was on sale however and bought the game again because of the upcoming DLC and I fell right back in love with it; but how I wish that my second playthrough was my first, if that somehow makes sense. The game feels so much better now, with some really bad framerate issues gone which could lead to cheap deaths and loading times that are way more bearable.
Overall I think my personal GOTY still is either TW3, because that game took over my life and not just my consoles, or Rocket League which is the most fun I had in years in a sports title and kinda shows that pure simulation might not be the only way to go. When a game with trucks that fly into a ball with rocket fuel can simulate the "feeling" of actually kicking a ball better than every football game on the market, you know you have a winner.
I absolutely loved the art direction, lore and story of BB but I just can't get on board with the game itself. I found it such a slog to finish, it didn't feel like an accomplishment when I completed it I just felt drained.
I just don't think those types of games are for me simply because I'm not good enough at them. I wish that the game had a much easier setting so casuals could just play and enjoy the story etc.
I know that totally goes against the whole 'souls' games and what they stand for but i just think that game alienated as many people who played it as those that loved and enjoyed it.
Shame.
I've not played Fallout 4 yet, but for me its probably Witcher 3. I would have said MGS V earlier, but i think witcher just edges it when I look back. Either would be a worthy winner in my book though, both fabulous games.
Until Dawn was good, but i personally thought the story lost its way and what could have been a really strong slasher flick game ended up a bit lost. I'd give best narrative to Tales from the Borderlands... TTs best work imo.
@Boerewors you know I'd completely forgotten how bad Bloodborne's loading times were before the patch.
I can see where you're coming from about wishing your second play through was your first. I guess I just loved the combat in it. It just seemed perfect to me.
I really enjoyed TW3 as well, but I'm just not that into swords and sorcery, that's subjective of course, and objectively I can see what an incredible game TW3 is.
It's a worthy winner, but my personal favourite is still Bloodborne.
@Cron_13 "I wish that the game had a much easier setting so casuals could just play and enjoy the story etc."
I'm a big fan of the series and that wouldn't bother me at all. Not everyone likes difficulty, so having a "casual" mode would be a decent shout. Bayonetta did, and it didn't do any harm.
Bloodborne is by far the worst game I have ever bought. It was not really the kind of genre that I would usually go for but I have never been so disappointed. I played it pre release at an event in my local game store and really enjoyed it. I was so disappointed when I bought it. I now understand what kind of game it is but there was no tutorial, no real story and no direction or point to it. It was like you were just dumped into a map, left to discover the point of the game on your own to just get your ass kicked. Why would you want to kill the same enemies over and over again to level up enough to progress through the game? I understand why people love it as it is one hell of a challenge and hats off to people who have the platinum trophy. Until dawn was incredible. A few problems with frame rate but the story was so good! Definitely my game of the year.
