The Riddler Will Return In Batman: Arkham City. Huzzah.

For those of you who haven't played the game (erm, why not?) these short side missions had you scanning areas of the environment to solve puzzles. They were fun because they were both simple to locate and challenging to pin-point. One of our video game pet-hates is running around giant maps for hours and hours trying to find a collectible. Arkham Asylum did away with that by providing Batman with maps and clues — they didn't tell you what to look for, just where to look. As such, it made solving the puzzles both possible and enjoyable.

According to an interview with Rocksteady's director, Sefton Hill, the puzzles will return in sequel Batman: Arkham City. But like the game's predecessor, Rocksteady's planning on making the challenges fun rather than frustrating.

“As with nearly every area of the game we’re enhancing it. One example is the criminal database coupled with the new interrogation mechanic,” Hill told PSM3 magazine.

“The Riddler continues to taunt the Dark Knight with mind-bending puzzles and exploration challenges, but the location of his biggest secrets are known only to him and people he’s told. Rather than unlocking their locations using maps, Batman will be able to scan a gang of thugs to find a potential informant.

“This is the guy you need to question, but first you’ll have to take down all the other gang members while sparing the one you want. That can be tough when Batman’s in a seamless FreeFlow combo chain,” Hill explained.

<span>It sounds like a brilliant concept on paper, because it forces you to think about who you're attacking. You need to keep that one guy alive so you can interrogate him and subsequently find the Riddler's secret. We're just curious what will happen if you accidentally beat the wrong guy up. Hopefully there's still an out which makes the puzzle possible.
