Best Upcoming PS4 RPGs Guide

Role-playing games cast a wide umbrella over the video game industry -- making for a genre that contains some of the very best titles of all time. No matter whether it comes from the east or the west, every experience brings with it something to call its own. The PlayStation 4 has seen some of the greatest RPGs over the past couple of years, including the likes of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Persona 5, but what's next? What can we look forward to when it comes to creating a character and setting off into an entirely new world in the future? These are the best upcoming PS4 RPGs.

Marvel's Avengers (PS4)

Marvel's Avengers (PS4)Marvel's Avengers (PS4)
Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Crystal Dynamics
Release Date: 4th Sep 2020 (USA) / 4th Sep 2020 (UK/EU)

While it'll still be classed as an RPG overall, Marvel's Avengers will be an experience focused much more on the loot than its levelling up system. Of course, there will be one, but this is a title from Crystal Dynamics that's set to emulate Destiny more than anything else. With pieces of armour to collect, new weapons and mods to equip, and cosmetic skins to acquire, you'll be blasting your way to max level before you know it. Then the endgame begins -- one we're definitely interested in checking out in September 2020.

Publisher: CD Projekt Red / Developer: CD Projekt Red
Release Date: 19th Nov 2020 (USA) / 19th Nov 2020 (UK/EU)

The masters of the role-playing genre are back. After developing one of the best RPGs ever made in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and capitalizing on that launch with two rounds of incredible DLC, CD Projekt Red is back with one of 2020's most anticipated games. Cyberpunk 2077 has the potential to be one of the PS4's crowning achievements as various slices of gameplay and impressive trailers have proven its potential. If the Polish developer can back all of that up come September, then we're all in for a rather special ride.

Elden Ring (PS4)

Elden Ring (PS4)Elden Ring (PS4)
Publisher: Bandai Namco / Developer: FromSoftware
Release Date: TBA

It's From Software's Hidetaka Miyazaki x Game of Thrones' George R.R. Martin. What more do you need to know? The Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice creator is back yet again with a tale that seems to be based heavily in the realm of fantasy, while also being especially difficult. Dragons aplenty, this is a particularly unique project that will probably be unlike anything else before it. Consider us hyped.

Project Awakening (PS4)

Project Awakening (PS4)Project Awakening (PS4)
Publisher: Cygames / Developer: Cygames
Release Date: TBA

Very, very little is known about Project Awakening. From developer Cygames, it's supposed to be an open world title designed for the western market with online co-op elements and a lot of "fighting, blood, and sweat". It apparently takes inspiration from The Lord of the Rings, which gives us hope, so go and check out the game's amazing reveal trailer from a few years back while we wait.

Tales of Arise (PS4)

Tales of Arise (PS4)Tales of Arise (PS4)
Publisher: Bandai Namco / Developer: Namco Tales Studio
Release Date: TBA

Tales of Arise looks set to be a rather major departure from what has earned the JRPG series a lot of merit and fans over the past couple of decades. Its got an all-new breathtaking look that distinguishes it from the likes of Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria, but not a lot is known about the game besides that. We'll get more details next year.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon (PS4)

Publisher: SEGA / Developer: Yakuza Studio
Release Date: 13th Nov 2020 (USA) / 13th Nov 2020 (UK/EU)

After seven entries in the tales of Kazuma Kiryu, Yakuza: Like a Dragon introduces a brand new protagonist into the mix. Bringing with him turn-based battles, the eighth instalment took fans by surprise upon its announcement, but it's an experience we've certainly warmed to in the time since. Expect another twist-filled tale alongside a stupendous amount of bad guys to beat up. The perfect way to see out the PS4 generation.
