I hate to disappoint everyone but I don’t have a “game that made me buy a PlayStation” story as my circumstances are a lot different since I wasn’t a gamer before PlayStation/NES and sometimes the consoles weren’t bought by me, I’ll try to give the closest thing I can possibly give though, so multiple games might get mentioned. (Also ps4 isn’t that recent in my mind because any event that’s ten years old will be harder for me to remember regardless of what it is)
Hopefully these stories will satisfy your curiosity:
ps1: my brother got it, I remember playing a lot of metal slug on it, as weird of a pick as that may sound (weird because I know people played it in arcades or Neo geo systems, not because the game itself is weird. Metal slug is phenomenal) (also future reference, rpgs were simply not a thing in our household due to language barrier)
ps2: GTA San Andreas and Dynasty Warriors 4, it’s impossible to go wrong with these two. Oh and of course, Smackdown vs Raw games. Word Life. ✌️
ps3: there’s no sugarcoating, gta iv was the most mind blowing game of all time, no game since quite captured the same feeling, also Warriors Orochi 3, which I think is Koei’s better series but that’s something I’ll save for a future guide…. Wink Wink, Sol.
ps4: Dark Souls 3, ain’t nothing like it baby! Also Dead Rising 1, you won’t be faulted for thinking “but that’s a 360 game!” but, actually, it skipped the ps3 entirely! The ps4 was its first Sony system and honestly, what a perfect game.
ps5: I won’t post a game, because I don’t have one to post, but I do have this lovely image of Yano Toru and Sakuraba doing a lovely shrug together, because I don’t have a ps5.

I think I went for PSone because that’s what all my friends had (I was probably around 12-13 at the time, so that would have mattered at that age). I remember getting crash bandicoot with it, so that was probably part of the selling point as well. Ps2 just felt like a natural progression at the time, and I enjoyed the first one so much I had no intention of swapping systems at the time.
I went to Xbox 360 next gen and then TLOU brought me back to ps with the PS4. I’m on Xbox again now, but who knows, maybe il end up on ps again one day!
Admittedly, I’m usually a late convert to consoles, buying them a few years after release….
PS1 - Wipeout / Tomb Raider
PS2 – Brought a PS2 Slim a few days after release along with Killzone (after 10 minutes of playing it, I thought "what have I done!!! - but fell in love with the PS2 once I discovered Time Splitters)
PS3 - Half-Life 2
PS4 - Wipeout VR (only got my PS4 last year! played Wipeout VR round a friend’s house and immediately went home and brought a PS4 and PSVR on eBay!!)
I was on the fence between the Playstation or the N64 until I played Soul Edge in an arcade. About a week or so later I was in the mall, saw Soul Blade on a shelf at Babbage's, and bought the ps1 on the spot (this was well before marriage and children, so I had disposable income lol). My roommates and I were up until 3 am for weeks.

PS2 Tekken 4
PS3 Motorstorm
you love to see it.
@Yousef- ps2: GTA San Andreas and Dynasty Warriors 4, it’s impossible to go wrong with these two. Oh and of course, Smackdown vs Raw games. Word Life. ✌️
GTA was and is a beast of a game nice.
Both very good games, great to platinum as the requirements also have a heavy platforming element for the collectibles and not just mind numbing walking around. Rate them both fairly equally, maybe a slight edge to the first @Mr-Elusive
@Mr_Wolf12000 smackdown 3 and fire pro? Interesting combo. Normally I stuck with games that had a “road to wrestlemania” mode, but those games are also good.

I'm actually surprised by how many people got a PS3 for Motorstorm. I thought I'd be the only one. I remember seeing it at Gamestop for less than $5 and thinking that not many people liked it due to that. I sometimes wondered why I got a console for such a cheap game, even though it was one of my most played PS3 games when I got it. I still play it and the sequels to this day, although i haven't beaten any. Closest I've gotten is in Arctic Edge on PS2.
PS1: The console I grew up with. I think my dad bought it because of Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil 2. The game that got me into games was Legend of Legaia.
PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, baby. To this day the most "next-gen" experience I have ever had.
PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Plenty of other games that I was also interested in, but if I didn't play MGS4 I felt like I was going to explode.
PS4: I knew I wanted one no matter what, but Batman: Arkham Knight was an early deciding factor.
PS5: Also knew I wanted it no matter what, but Spider-Man: Miles Morales was a great way to break in the console.
I honestly don't know. I think I've always had consoles just as casual hand me downs and gifts, and it was stuff like Fifa and other sports games, mostly, with stuff like GTA, Red Dead Redemption that kept me mildly interested in owning consoles. Someone gave me some Arkham games on PS3, I think. But they must have been oldish releases at that point, still very much enjoyed them. The only PS2 era games I can remember are Max Payne, GTA and XIII 😅 some ps3 memories would be RDR, Alpha Protcol, GTA 4, and I think I played GTA5 on PS3, and heavy rain.
PS4 I remember I was kind of excited to get Watch Dogs, it looked new and shiny somehow, but I imagine I would have had the console anyway out of habit by then. I don't think I thought "i'll need it for Watch Dogs" but maybe the time I got it and Watch Dogs release were a close correlation so they seem to go hand in hand. Black Flag I discovered on PS4. I don't think I did a lot of gaming late ps3 early PS4 anyway though, not even sports games. Uncharted 4 was a gift and that knocked my socks off when I tried that (probably a while after it released) and I remember that rekindled or kicked off a new excitement with what games can be, but I don't think I played much else until Red Dead Redemption 2 tbh, which made me buy a new tv and second console 😅 so that's kind of another moment my gaming habits changed. It made me want to expand my gaming tastes once more to find other great games, as I'd basically missed anything good outside of my specific tastes at that point.
Late PS4 into PS5 is my main gaming generation with RDR2 leading into The Witcher, into KCD etc for me, and I've played a bunch of PS3/PS4 remasters and games on ps5 since 😅 but only because I'd missed out on them first time.
PS5 Pro is probably the first time I'm saying I'm getting it "for this" and the "this" will be KCD2, GTA6, AC Shadows, GoT2??? NAUGHTY DOG GAME??????? WOLVERINE???????? So it'd be nice if SIE, you know, said something about those, say around Tokyo Game Fest, the rumoured Sony show, etc that is all nicely surrounding the, you know, PS5 Pro Pre Order date...
PS6 I will most likely say "I'm getting this for The Witcher 4" if I've not locked myself into an endless PC upgrading cycle by then 😅
