@BLP_Software The post-game moon collecting activities are way more fun than the linear story campaign, in my opinion. Collecting all of the moons/coins/etc. really is its own reward.

Question - I didn't read any of the prior posts because I want to go in fresh when I get a switch (sorry if this was mentioned before).

I tried to demo this game at Best Buy, but the jump button felt horribly broken. Pressing the jump button wouldn't respond while running unless you stopped running. So the sequence would need to be "hold run, press b button (nothing happens). Hold B button, let go of run and he then jumped.

Was this probably just an issue with the demo unit - like maybe over use? There's no way the jumping is that rough, right?

@ztpayne7 The jumping isn't that rough. Ive had no issues at all.

@ztpayne7 No, you can run and jump at the same time, it's like any other Mario game.

@BLP_Software @Octane okay it must’ve been a defective unit or something. It happened with both the grip controller and separate joycons that were there. I’ve played plenty of mario games so I know how it should feel. I’ll have to try another one just to get that experience out of my head. Hahaha. I can’t describe to you how terrible it felt.

@ztpayne7 It was absolutely the unit, then. Mario has never controlled more smoothly than he has in this game.

Well, there's that one game with the water jetpack...

In all seriousness, who thought that mapping the dive to ZL + Y was a good idea? Why can't there be a separate button for diving?

I completely forgot that was a thing you can do. I just press the screenshot button.

@kyleforrester87 I've probably overlooked situations I could use it, but when playing a game to review you don't really remember it more than you want to.

40 hour game though, my 100% playtime tells me on my phone. I'm sure there were moments I could have snazzed up but in the interest of time (And because I forget it exists) I just press the button that takes a snap.

Great picture! I didn't arrive in New Donk City yet, I'm on the fifth stage with approximately 130 moons.

@PS_Nation Thanks! I only have like 80-90, I'm spending a little while finding them but generally moving on with the story, I'll come back to clean up!

@kyleforrester87 Really awesome screenshot. For some reason, I struggle to get the timing right with these screenshots, so I haven't taken too many.

And yeah, just focusing on the story with a bit of exploration here and there is the best way to go until you get to the end of the story. A ton of stuff is unlocked in all of the kingdoms in the post-game, and going back to explore them is great fun.

@kyleforrester87 Thank you for sharing with us. The game is really awesome, i feel it like is the ultimate 3D platformer.

I've finished the main storyline of this now, but I've still got the post-game stuff to do. My impressions of it are quite mixed, certainly moreso than I expected as a huge Mario fan. I definitely think it's the weakest 3D Mario game since Sunshine, but then I also would have given (if I were reviewing them) all of the 3D Mario games since Sunshine a 10, so that's not much of a knock. The issues with it are not massive but they were enough to hamper the experience for me a little.

I do enjoy the run around and discover everything for yourself mentality of the game, but it's a little disappointing that the solution to practically every situation you find yourself in is to throw your magic hat at it until you sort it out. I love the capture mechanic in theory, and there are some amazing moments with it, but it's a bit of a get out of jail free card for the developers at times too. I also think the game would be better if there were less moons but they were more difficult to obtain. There's hundreds of them just sat out in the open which aren't exactly fun to get, and it becomes busy work. The motion controls are rubbish, too. I get that Nintendo desperately wants to recreate the success of the Wii, but shoe-horning motion controls into everything is not the answer. Useful actions like throwing your hat upwards, or the one where the hat spins around you are mapped to imprecise, awkward motion controls - especially if you're using the Pro Controller - and it's annoying because half of the buttons on the pad go unused. Also, the bosses aren't very good.

Those gripes aside, there's so much magic in the game that balances it all out. The little 2D bits are an absolute joy for the most-part. There's one in Metro Kingdom in particular that is wonderful. In fact, Metro Kingdom generally is wonderful. That was the one thing I was most worried about - Mario wandering around with weird realistic looking people - but it's actually where the game most shines. There's so many fantastic ideas crammed into that place. And the finale to that Kingdom might be the best thing I've played all year.

The endgame is fantastic. Once you've got the story out of the way - which is predictably irrelevant - the game actually gets better. The new stuff they throw your way is among the best content in the game, which is a brave move, and certainly to be commended. But for as fantastic as a lot of the endgame content is, it does feel a bit grindy, with many of the new moons etc. being too easy to obtain but just tedious to find. Again, it might have been better to have less endgame to improve the overall quality, but I guess you can just abandon ship once you've stopped having fun so it's not too much of a problemo.

And that's about it. Good Mario game. Perhaps not what I wanted or even what I expected, but it's still a really good game. And I'll eat my own head if we don't get Odyssey 2 before the Switch is done.
