I just beat the 70 star bowser battle and couldn't get off "The End" screen, turns out you have to turn off your N64 consoleš¤¦š»āāļø guess I'll just press the Home button...
@nessisonett I've used the pro since the experiment with the GC controller, just too much faff and it is pretty smooth with the pro. I have been playing in handheld a bit when I'm in bed too.
@mookysam I only just found out about the 100 coin thing from a well meaning Toad! Can't believe I've gota go back through all the levels. I will do it last though so I can have a run through and say goodbye to all the levels. I doubt I'll play this again for another ten years at least
I have to say I really liked Jolly Roger Bay in 64. First time I can say I felt relaxed in 64, it's such a generally chill world (annoying eel mission notwithstanding). Only thing I'll say is that it needs to be more open on when you need a transformation in order to get a Star, as I spent way too much time trying to get the Jet Stream Star, not realizing until I looked it up that you need access to Metal Mario first (I kept trying to use the Koopa Troopa shell since it didn't seem to have any other use here, though it kept giving out just before I got to the jet stream, so I wasn't sure what I was missing).
Anyhow, I got all the other Stars in the world, plus three Secret Stars (the Aquarium one, Red Coins in first Bowser level, and basement Rabbit), for a total of 31, and I just beat the first Bowser level.

PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@RR529 Yeah, Iām a big fan of Jolly Roger Bay, itās a tightly designed world. I agree about the transformations being a bit obscure on occasion but I think thatās a problem (or not, depending on your view) with games in general back then, a lot relied on some leaps of logic that mostly spread through word of mouth. Nintendo Power was almost required for some old games.
Jesus, why are the missions in Shifting Sand Land so much longer and harder than anything else in this game? That one where you have to land on four pillars and then fight a boss is the worst. I hate the wing cap!
Currently Playing: Resident Evil Village: Gold Edition
@Ralizah Yeah, thatās the one I mentioned before. Mario can strangely walk up the pillars at a 90 degree angle at least but consistently landing on the pillars was a nightmare. Do you have the red coins yet by any chance? š
@nessisonett Never understood those surfaces Mario can magically walk up against, yet a 10 degree incline on a grassy hill can cause him to slide like it was coated in vaseline.
@nessisonett "Obtuse" is a nice way of putting it. Who would think to drop off the side of the platform right before the star and then have to collect specific coins? I had to look up what to do. Too bad I can't fully put this land behind me until the 100 coin thing, but I'm done otherwise. Thank god.
@Octane That's... kind of been the norm so far. A few levels were decent, but this game is frustration in condensed form.
Currently Playing: Resident Evil Village: Gold Edition
@Ralizah I still havenāt gotten the 100 coin stars in most areas. Iām gonna go back for them because most worlds I just want out of after the 6th star. I have it for Whompās Fortress and Wet-Dry World so far. Itās weird, I would still say Iām enjoying the game despite the frustration. A bit like my feelings with the Souls games, a lot of annoying moments but after theyāre over Iām absolutely looking for more of the same.
@Ralizah For the 100 coin stars, I recommend looking up guides, because some levels have barely enough coins in them. So it's annoying to get stuck at 95 coins or something, only to discover that you've gotten everything you can. Most levels are perfectly doable, but I do recall that some are a lot harder, so a warning beforehand is always useful.
@Octane Yep, Iāve done all the stars except the moving bars one and know how to influence the clock. The problem is that one teeny tiny mistake and youāre all the way down to the bottom. Marinoās horrific turning circle doesnāt help and momentum is bloody annoying too. If there was ever a level that I just wish I could erase, itās this. Even more than Rainbow Ride.
Played 64 for about an hour tonight and made some decent progress. Completed the Vanish Cap course (with it's Red Coin Star), got all six of Lethal Lava Land's Stars (not it's 100 coin Star though), and got a freebie Star from a Toad.
Lethal Lava Land was definitely training you for the tougher platforming levels ahead (it had tougher platforming challenges than what's come before, but while falling into lava is damaging, it's not as harsh as a bottomless pit). Dealing with Bullies became a lot easier once I realized jumping on them was safe (wouldn't assume so based on their horns), and I was cutting it close on the Log Roll Star (I had two health points left when I made it to the log, but managed it without falling off. The volcano Stars took quite a few tries, but were nothing frustrating.
Iāve now reached 100 stars. That bloody one in Tick Tock Clock eludes me but I went back for a couple of 100 coin stars. This is going to be quite the push to 120.
