After not playing games for a while I'm starting to crack on with my backlog. Cleared a big one- MGS V. It's been sitting in the backlog for over 3 years now.
Wow, what an experience that was. Definitely goes into my favourite PS4 games of all time list & probably somewhere in my overall.
Thought I'd beaten it a number of times especially based on how many times I had to see the credits! What a ride. Ended up getting all the endings all though Quiet & the true ending took some time to get due to the restrictions.
Without getting into spoilers I'm so glad I spent an extra 15 hours or so trying to get the true ending. I love it when a game ties it all back together.
Also Quiet's ending kind of reminded me of Death Stranding. It's about making connections- everyone can somehow understand each other.
Absolutely brilliant. Only downside for me where the extreme missions. There were a few where I thought this is impossible. Luckily didn't need them for story completion.
I wish I had been following games when MGS V first came out. Couldn't imagine what the reception was to Quiet (who I loved, as a character). Can't imagine that sort of 'casting' would go down well in 2021.

@Fight_Teza_Fight Congrats mate! Sounds like you had a great time with the game as well as unlocking all the endings. I'm surprised to hear that you liked the true ending, all I've heard about MGSV is that people didn't like the ending since it felt rushed because of several missions being cut out or something to that extent. I've played 40 hours of the game before I lost my save file but I had an absolute blast with it from what I've played. Can't imagine the ending managing to ruin the experience as a whole, which is something I feel is quite common among gamers these days. If the ending to a game is bad, then apparently the entire game is bad. That's the impression I get from a lot of people these days. For example, Mass Effect 3 apparently had a bad ending and while it's been "fixed" since its release, people still won't acknowledge how good ME3 is. I've played through the ME trilogy back-to-back and I found ME3 to be the best game in the series by a long shot due to the incredible story missions that ME2 sadly lacked. Yet wherever I go, nobody mentions how good ME3 is because of the damage that was done to it by the initial poor ending. It's just weird to me how people won't let certain things go or won't acknowledge the whole package rather than one aspect of it. Both ME3 and MGSV will forever be remembered in a lot of people's minds as the games that had "poor endings" and nothing else, which is sad to see. Even if I had finished MGSV and didn't like the ending, it wouldn't erase those 40 hours that I had fun with the game, you know?
Apologies for the rambling but I've been thinking about this for some time now so I had to "let it out". Anyway, I'm glad that you enjoyed the game!
@LtSarge@Fight_Teza_Fight MGS5’s ending actually wasn’t bad in my opinion, and in fact, I’d agree that the true ending was quite awesome, as well as Quiet’s ending. Both of these narrative arc conclusions left me quite emotionally impacted.
I think the march toward the ending is what people dislike. And perhaps everyone got caught up with the news that the games production was cut short while Kojima and Konami’s relationship was unraveling. At the time I played it, I wasn’t all that into following the extraneous details of video game production and development rumors and was barely consuming information from enthusiasts sites like PushSquare, so I think I didn’t have the background info prejudice me about the ending. Sometimes you end up seeing what you expect to see, it’s just human nature. I was taking in the game with a level of naïveté, I so was blown away by the final the events.
That said, the recycling of missions is definitely a weak point toward the end, and I can see the complaints there. It’s just that the final story beats are pretty awesome in my book, especially when taken into the context of the whole series l, like FTF says.
As for Quiet, I do remember a small bit of controversy about her ‘casting’ or character design. Her minimalist skin covering is actually justified well enough in the narrative, but you can’t help but think of it as an excuse to have her scantily clad. Which is more than we could say for other games which have female (and sometimes male) armor being anything but protective. 😅 Her cleavage aside, I really liked Quiet and the bond you’re able to build with her and just the cool idea of her as a sniping buddy to help you out.

@Fight_Teza_Fight@LtSarge@Th3solution yeah I thought the true ending of MGSV was so good that it was probably the main reason that I wanted to play through the whole series after playing it. Such a clever retro-fit.
It’s more the content that didn’t make it into the game as there was a whole act that got cut from the game. So there are some plot lines which are just abruptly cut off and it certainly left me a little confused and deflated.
@Th3solution Ah I see, thanks for the clarification! But yeah, that's the thing, you need to look at the whole game and not let a couple of missions ruin the entire experience.
Also, it's true that letting people know that the production was impacted will affect your opinion about the game. But that shouldn't matter because we might as well have not learned about that fact to begin with. For example, how many games out there probably had rushed or cut content that we don't know about but that we still liked? Stuff like this shouldn't matter in all honesty as long as the game overall is good, which MGSV is.
@Thrillho Gotcha. Well, I can't speak about that matter yet since I still haven't finished the game, so I personally don't have an opinion of how significant that section was for the overall story. I'll just have to play the rest of it and find out for myself.
@Thrillho yeah that's fair... was only thinking yesterday about how much I would love an MGSV Remake but withal the additional stuff Kojima had originally planned.
Just finished my first run on Metal Gear Solid 2… a long (like long-LONG) way to go for the plat though (if I’m able to achieve it at all) but I’m one playthrough down.
What a frikkin’ game… can’t believe I missed out on this when it released. Although I played it on PS3, it is now officially my favourite ever PS2 game, overtaking GTA: San Andreas. It’s a beautiful thing!
@colonelkilgore I think I’d say 2 was my favourite MGS game as well. Closely followed by 1. I like Snake Eater but the bosses do my head in and the jungle doesn’t quite give me the same feeling as running around a tightly guarded base.
*I absolutely hate the ending to Metal Gear Solid V.
In other news, I finished Yakuza 2 (it was delightful) and I have now moved on to Judgement for some reason. I don't know why. I just did. Then Yakuza 3.
Y3 is a bit of a slog. It’s a long game with waaaaay too many substories (something like 120?) and the story is a bit all over the place but does set lots up for the rest of the series. In true Yakuza fashion, I did enjoy how the first few minutes of the third game completely undoes/ignores so much of the ending of the second game.
It doesn’t help that it looks and feels even more dated after coming from the Kiwami remakes as it’s pretty much just a port of the original games.
Still love the series though and I still have the Judgment games and Like a Dragon to play.
@nessisonett so I'd actually rate V as my favourite... but 2 is definitely my favourite of the older, more traditional MGS's. Have thoroughly enjoyed every one though... and really looking forward to 4 to see how it all ends.
@Thrillho I liked Yakuza 3 a lot actually. It’s very very silly but the Okinawa setting was properly fresh after quite a few games in Kamurocho. The only problem is the AI and their love of blocking.
@Thrillho My girlfriend is working her way through the Yakuza series at a much faster pace than me and she loves 3 and can't wait for me to start it. I wonder how I'll feel about it. I guess which Yakuza games you like best is determined by what you like about the series most and which games give you that. If you love the fighting you might have a different opinion to someone who loves the story or the wacky mini-games.
@Thrillho@nessisonett I liked Yakuza 3 a lot as well, also because of the different setting. Okinawa just felt like a nice place to be in after having been in places that are both very similar, i.e. Kamurocho and Sotenbori. Not to mention the orphanage and the beach. I just like warm areas in general. It's too bad Okinawa never returns as a setting in the later games.
@nessisonett@johncalmc@LtSarge I loved the game too and agree that a change in setting was very welcome, and there’s a great cast too.
I just felt it took an approach of “more is better” approach, particularly with the substories which were pretty forgettable for the most part.
I’m definitely glad the released 3-5 on PS4 as it happened not long after I finished YK2 so I had started eyeing up the original games to continue the series.
*I’ve accepted the fact that I will never be able to complete the Yakuza series and all it’s offshoots. There are graduate degrees that would take fewer hours to complete.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@LtSarge Absolutely agree. An ending doesn’t erase all the hours of entertainment you got out of it. I’ve still got ME to play as I missed out on it during the PS3 era, but I know how ME3 ends so I’ll be going in with tempered expectations.
As for your save issue in MGS V...I had a similar issue where the game wouldn’t load my save or even recognise it. I normally play offline, but once I signed in the game was able to load my save. Maybe that’s your issue?
@colonelkilgore I’m a relative newcomer to MGS played through the collection on vita. Good luck on the platinum! I’ve just got MGS 4 to play, which as some posters pointed out is chronically after MGS V. Just need a way to play it. Got 2 busted PS3s & my Now sub is finished.
@Th3solution Quiet’s awesome. I think I started following news a year or so after MGS V came out, but I could only imagine what the reaction could’ve been. The ‘it’s raining scene’ might just be the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen. Thank god the wife wasn’t in!
@Thrillho I can only think of the last time we see Eli, if that’s what you mean? Otherwise I thought it was pretty complete. I know there’s this theory there should’ve been 51 missions.
I did watch a YouTube video afterwards to connect some of the dots, but overall I loved the ending regardless.
