Right so Iam not sure if Iam the only person who is curious about how Playstation Network or PSN actually works. I mean almost every time we boot up the console we are like almost always interacting with PSN in one way or the other.

It feels sometimes that the only thing we know about PSN is that it is a service that is constantly running 24/7. Yet we know so little about how the service actually works or how much resouces are required to the service running. I sometimes find it a bit strange that not more questions are asked about how PSN works. Gamers seem to just expect as is the case with most online services, PSN to just be available 24/7. Yet few seem interested in details about how the service works or how Sony manages to constantly keep PSN online almost all the time. I can only guess that it most requires quite some resources to just keep the PSN running. Iam not sure also if the only one who is impressed with that Sony have managed to build such powerful network and store. Again most pepole seem just to expect the service to be there.

So I must state that Iam a bit surprised that no one seems interested to discuses this in my opinion very interesting topic. Iam thinking of maybe moving the topic to the PS5 category instead.

I heard that the letters PSN really stand for Profitable Subscription, Numbnuts. Do you think this could be true?

@sorteddan No not really. Not sure where you got that from.. That said I still think it would be cool with a more serious discussion about the the topic

@oliverp One thing I do know about PSN is that for a long time it was impossible to change your online name because it was used as the unique identifier for your user record. Very bad design in database terms. I think that's been sorted out now.

its primarily a storefront like steam that gives you a profile and a friends list and other services like cloud saves and game purchases, theres multiple servers for it, for different regions. One service that it DOESNT give you is online - when you connect online to play multiplayer games, PSN isn't used because youre using your OWN internet to connect to a SEPERATE third party server i.e the games server ran by either EA, Activison, etc . PSN has nothing to do with online multiplayer and is a scam. uh, sorry, had to get that off my chest. but anyway, its a storefront service with several servers for several regions.
