@RogerRoger I was so, so glad that I’d watched all of Classic Who before The Power of the Doctor. It felt like a proper epilogue for my binge watch as much as Jodie’s time on the show.
@Jimmer-jammer Nice! The trailer had me intrigued, but I've developed a strained relationship with Netflix the last couple of years. They seem to prefer quantity over quality (and even admitted that their movie production slate, at least, was motivated by getting as many movies as possible made without much regard for whether the movie was the best it could be or not) and they're way to cancel-happy for my taste. Been burned so many times on Netflix shows I've enjoyed being canceled.
Still, their animated series have typically been of fairly high quality, so I will definitely give this one a go.
I was scratching about for a show which I could watch on my day off… something the missus didn’t fancy, so she didn’t feel like she was missing out. Decided to give Black Sails a second try (I watched around 2 seasons of it about 5 or 6 years ago but must’ve got distracted by something else and never actually finished it).
So I’m three eps in and really enjoying it. Great locations and an intriguing political landscape, decent writing (which from what I recall only gets better and better) and I’m not ashamed to admit I have a bit of a man-crush on Toby Stephens’ Captain Flint… a pretty much perfect combination of a great character and astute casting. An overlooked gem!
Watched The Daleks in Colour on BBC Four for the anniversary. It was alright but honestly I might prefer the original black and white version, glacial pace and all. The recut feels a bit disjointed at times and there’s even a bloody montage set to silly music that I did not enjoy. The lack of cliffhangers is criminal too. I dunno, the story itself really isn’t great no matter how much you mess with it and add irritating anachronistic music and flashbacks and cut over half of the footage. It’s obviously influential though! My mum and younger brother looked slightly aggrieved that I’d commandeered the telly to watch it in all honesty. Not the greatest of introductions to Classic Who for an audience and more of a curio for über fans.
@colonelkilgore
I have the entirety of Black Sails on Bluray but only watched the first season and haven't even gotten around to pulling it out and continuing yet. I did enjoy what I did watch however.
Born too early to explore space and born too late to explore Earth, but born just in time to explore memes.
@AgentCooper Glad you enjoyed what’s admittedly a mixed start to a great show. The first part is one of the all-time great pilots to a show, it really does set up the premise brilliantly, but I do find myself tuning out of the caveman stuff later on. The next one is a classic though, that’s the real test of whether you have the headspace for Classic Who or whether you have to work a little harder to understand the format from the perspective of 60s TV. I’m at least totally buzzing for tonight, I feel like a kid again being excited for the show being back.
That new Doctor Who episode was alright, but wasn't particularly great. It was a bit too heavily reliant on deus ex machinas to get them out of any difficulty (even more so than usual), and it felt weird how the Doctor didn't really do all that much to hide his identity around Donna. Throw in a clumsily-written and jarring argument about pronouns, and a sexist "men wouldn't understand" line, and it got a bit awkward in places.
On the plus side, it was great to see David Tennant and Catherine Tate in Doctor Who again, plus I enjoyed the alien designs. Anyway, I'll give next week's episode a try. Hopefully it'll get better.
I was also looking into the classic episodes earlier. Might try out either The Unearthly Child or that recently colourised Dalek episode in the near future.
Also, the Doctor Who Children in Need short last week was brilliant. It's well worth watching if you're a fan of the show and have a spare 5 minutes.
Just finished The Bear season 2 and both the missus and I were just blown away! I remember liking season 1 quite a bit but… damn this one was emotional.
Incredible writing, a perfect… almost documentary style of filming, some outrageous guest stars from episode to episode and quite simply the best acting on any tv show airing right now. Chefs kiss!
Really really weird episode, a bold move to not just go down the crowd-pleaser route and instead stick a cerebral one in with just the two actors. Considering there’s only 3, glad they stuck an actual standalone episode in there. Plus they actually mentioned the Flux stuff and the Timeless Child which I guess would have been a bit hard to completely retcon.
Always lovely to see Bernard Cribbins too, glad they got him on set before he passed away last year. Excited for the finale next week, these have already been far and away the best episodes of the show since at least Capaldi but if I’m being honest I haven’t been this excited since Matt Smith’s early episodes.
This weekend's Doctor Who episode was brilliant. After a so-so episode last week, it feels like the show is finally back on top form. An unknown entity, and the Doctor and Donna having to use their brains to figure out the situation and how to survive, it had all the hallmarks of a great episode.
And judging by the teaser at the end, it looks like next week's is going to be a wild adventure.
@LN78 Yeah I loved it, and I also love that it completely decapitates people who didn’t understand the movie. Crazy to find people confused that Scott is a bad person. I saw someone saying that essentially this series is somebody looking back at their 20s with a much clearer eye, which I’d agree with. The graphic novels were almost like first hand accounts without the self-reflection whereas the series nails it while also admitting that the characters are incredibly messy and stupid 99% of the time.
@LN78@nessisonett Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was superb. A fantastic soundtrack as well!
I'm 4 episodes into Blue Eyed Samurai which I think is excellent so far. Also watching Invincible on Prime, been a while since I read the comics but the story seems to be moving at a rapid pace in the show compared to the source material.
