Topic: The Music Review/Recommendation Thread

I know we talk about albums in the music thread but I have seen people try to give short reviews of albums in there and thought that feature deserved a separate thread of it's own where people can come to review and possibly recommend albums they have listened to. It's also a place to come to get recommendations of albums you might enjoy listening to based on a list of your favorite artists/albums to give people an idea of what you are looking for.

I will just tag @nessisonett @Thrillho @ralphdibny @ShaiHulud @Kidfried @kyleforrester87 @johncalmc @themcnoisy as I know you are all big music fans and may be interested in contributing.

This is a place to discover new music and share the music you already know with someone who is seeking something specific and new to listen to.

To start things off, I will just ask the people : What sort of album would you recommend for someone who is heavily into jazz & Brian Eno?

@TheBrandedSwordsman It depends on whether you’re into Brian Eno’s work with Roxy Music and his glam albums or his ambient work.

So, please reply me back.
You seems don't even want to reply me.
I want to share my music recommendation.
This is Fly Through the Night by Mr T (Tomoyuki Uchida) from Beatmania IIDX 6th style.

Try to listen to this song.
I know it is something that you have never heard before but try to listen and you might changed your mind after hearing songs like that.
I can assure you the songs i recommend to you are very beautiful songs.

Also, you should listen this beautiful sorrow Euro Trance song L'amour et la liberte by NAOKI Underground feat Paula Terry.

@nessisonett Mostly his ambient work. Would you recommend anything from your collection/knowledge based off of that?

@TheBrandedSwordsman Either Replica by Oneohtrix Point Never or Tim Hecker’s Harmony in Ultraviolet. Both push ambient stylings closer towards electroacoustic and are brilliant albums. The full thing of Replica isn’t up in one video on YouTube but Harmony in Ultraviolet is.

@nessisonett Great recommendation. I am listening now and thoroughly enjoying it. Just what I was looking for. Thanks. Any recommendations I can help you with? Jazz, perhaps?

@TheBrandedSwordsman I’m working my way through my own little list for now but I’ll be sure to ask if I’m looking for something in particular!

@TheBrandedSwordsman I listened to Viagra Boys’ Street Worms last night but I’ve still got in my list:

Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Patti Smith - Horses
Ween - Quebec
This Heat - Deceit
Joni Mitchell - Blue
Panda Bear - Person Pitch

Plenty to keep me occupied from completely different genres!

@nessisonett I really like Ween, try The Mollusc by them as well, it's one of my favourite albums. How do you discover new music? Google? Spotify? Radio? Recommendations from friends?

@TheBrandedSwordsman I haven’t had the best luck with algorithms, whether that’s Spotify’s or whatever dark sorcery used with RateYourMusic’s recommendations. My older brother and uncles listen to a ton of music and always recommend stuff if they find something interesting. I’ve cultivated pretty different tastes from my brother though despite me being 4 years younger so getting passed down his music and stuff. I do like a good trawl through a niche genre like outsider house, Dunedin sound or the Soviet underground punk scene though. For that I’d do a bit of research on a database like RateYourMusic and get a feel for the cult or well-received stuff and then move outwards from there.

So for the Soviet scene, I started off listening to Kino and Aquarium, basically the Stones and Beatles of cult Soviet rock, before moving towards other bands like Grazhdanskaya Oborona who’re a bit harder to get into. I did the same thing with shoegaze, started with My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive and did a deep dive into their influences, like Jesus and Mary Chain and even as far back as Phil Spector’s stuff. I then moved onto their contemporaries like Galaxie 500, Drop Nineteens and Pale Saints before checking out more recent bands with major influences from 90s shoegaze like The Radio Dept., Broken Social Scene etc. Then that led onto the dream pop revival of the 2010s too so I can explore from there as well. It means I have a bit more appreciation for artists like Ovlov, Weatherday and Hatchie who are all making totally different styles of music these days but rooted in the same shoegaze influences.

@nessisonett Do you have Russian ancestry then? If not, why all the interest in the soviet scene? Where does that come from? You say RateYourMusic hasn't given you the best luck when it comes to discovering new music but you still use it for deep dives. Anyway I was a big fan of MBV myself back in the day, still haven't listened to their 2013 record but mean to get round to it at some stage.

Do you ever listen to Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone on Radio 6 music? There's some quite good stuff on there. I tried searching for the Jesus and Mary Chain on Spotify but it just gave me a whole load of gospel acts, searching for Kanye West's Jesus is King album had the same result. Is shoegaze your favourite genre besides jazz, then?

Your uncle was of course a noted musician and I think I may have seen him play live about 10 years ago, so it would make sense that he listens to a wide array of decent quality music, it's cool that you get stuff from your other uncle and brother as well, being an only child I generally have to rely on my friends and wider family circle to get my music, when i am not out there exploring and discovering it for myself.

@TheBrandedSwordsman I don’t have any Russian blood but I just have a big interest in that scene! There’s something truly fascinating about the Glasnost period and the effects it had on the local music.

I find it kinda mad that JaMC aren’t showing up on Spotify for you, I know the algorithm skews acts similar to what you listen to but still, Just Like Honey has almost 45 million listens! I’m not sure if I’d say that shoegaze was my favourite genre as I probably don’t have a favourite as such but I really do like the sounds and experimentations created by those bands.

A few years back I actually found a combination of my dad and my uncles’ record collections from their teenage years at my grandparents’ which was pretty cool. It ranged from my dad’s stuff like Blood Sugar Sex Magik and The Real Thing to my uncle’s stuff like a couple of Godspeed You Black Emperor records to my musician uncle’s stuff like both Jellyfish albums. A truly eclectic mix that even included Saturday Night Fever’s soundtrack but really interesting to see what sorta stuff they were listening to at my age!

@nessisonett It's great to discover that sort of stuff, my dad was interested in punk and David Bowie when he was younger, he sold all his records so I can't trawl through them, but ocassionally something will come on the radio, such as Gang Of Four or the Pistols or Bowie that he used to own on vinyl. Do you like any of the P*ssy Riot stuff then? I take it you were familiar with everything that was happening with them when they were in the news?

@TheBrandedSwordsman Oh yeah, I remember them being in the news a lot although never actually listened to their music. They always reminded me of Peaches although obviously more of a punk band. Probably worth listening to!
