@FuriousMachine I only thought Top Gun Maverick was ok, but nothing special. I was never a huge fan of the original though.

I actually don't remember much of the last Mission Impossible film and they all seem to merge into one thing in my mind. Not awful films or anything, but I think I'm just bored of the series now.

There are quite a few franchises where I've gotten a bit jaded with them. Transformers, Jurrasic Word, Terminator, Ghostbusters, Aliens, Predator, Marvel/DC (excluding The Batman) to name some from the top of my head.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

@LN78 Speed is amazing. Between Keanu’s awful acting, Alan Ruck being a bellend and Dennis Hopper being fairly unhinged in every sense of the word, it’s a perfect storm of 90s excess. Sure, the last half hour lacks the intensity of the bus scenes but it’s worth it for that railway signal death.

Just watched Tropic Thunder. Has to be one of the all time best comedies. Haven't seen it since it came out!

Urusei Yatsura: Lum the Forever (Blu-Ray)

Seems like they were trying to emulate the vibe of Beautiful Dreamer, but it just doesn't work.

This is seriously the most confusing of these I've seen & maybe it'll make more sense on a rewatch, but I honestly couldn't really follow what was actually happening (like it was the city itself dreaming & trying to rewrite Lum from reality since she's not a part of it's history or something, IDK?).

@LN78 Still convinced that the only good thing that came from Waterworld is the soundtrack to the SNES game 😂

Extraction 2. Brilliantly entertaining and some truly excellent set pieces. Both films are like a call back to 80's and 90's action movies I grew up watching. Might be controversial, but think I prefer them to the John Wick films, albeit I've not seen the fourth film yet.

Just finished watching Scream VI. I noticed this movie while browsing Netflix and decided to watch a preview of it, which instantly hooked me so I watched the entire thing. I haven't watched the previous Scream movies and yeah, I was hesitant in watching the sixth movie in the series but I'm sick and tired of not finding all the movies in a franchise on a streaming service so I decided to just go for it instead of not watching it altogether. And I'm glad that I did, because this movie is excellent! The characters were actually likeable and Ghostface is an absolutely terrifying villain. They move so fast and are so brutal with their stabbings. That's another reason why I thought this movie was great, it was just so brutal. People got stabbed all the time and it looked so realistic. The screams sounded realistic as well.

Another thing I liked about this movie (and the franchise as a whole) is that it's constantly breaking the fourth wall while not ruining the actual movie. The characters are aware of horror movie tropes but they don't "realise" they are in a movie so to speak. I think that's really cool!

Simply put, I really enjoyed this movie and I definitely want to watch the previous ones now as well. Granted, there were a lot of spoilers for the previous movies but I'm hoping I'll forget most of the stuff once I get to them. I'm just glad that I watched one movie just to find out if I'd like this franchise or not, which I do. I'm totally hooked now!

@LtSarge Scream is easily one of my favourite franchises, horror or no (along with the Final Destination movies that I love dearly) and it has been pretty solid all the way through, in my opinion. Scream 3 is easily the weakest entry, but it still has its charms. I remember seeing the first one in the theater and being blown away by that opening scene. All the way up to release, the marketing made it seem that Drew Barrymore was the headliner. Seen all the movies in the theater except 5, which I missed out on due to COVID.

Hope you enjoy the rest of them, too

@FuriousMachine My brother showed me some Final Destination movies when I was a kid and they gave me nightmares for weeks, lol. Absolutely terrifying stuff! I might rewatch them today just for the fun of it. I think they are available on Prime Video if I recall correctly.

Thanks mate! Hopefully I'll get around to watching the rest of the Scream movies as early as next month.

Movies I watched on vacation.

Airplane II: the Sequel (Blu-Ray)

I honestly liked this one about as much as the first.

It does retread some (well, a lot) of the same gags, but I enjoyed the light sci-fi focus introduced (it follows the maiden voyage of the first civilian shuttle flight, and even features William Shatner as the commander of a Moon base). Amongst other things, there are gags referencing Star Wars, E.T., 2001: a Space Odyssey, and of course Star Trek. Also, it's another one of those 80's "PG" rated flicks that manages to get away with a few boobs.

Bohachi Bushido: the Villain (Blu-Ray)

A vagabond Samurai in the Edo era finds himself in the employ of a gang called the "Bohachi" (an outfit involved with trafficking women to brothels), and must use his lethal talents to protect the gangs interests from rival outfits & the law.

Filled with extreme levels of gore & nudity very much intended to push boundaries, it very much won't be for many viewers, but it might be worth a look if you're into the 70's "exploitation" genre.

Lupin the 3rd VS Cat's Eye (Prime Video)

Crossover that sees the Lupin gang facing off against the cast of Cat's Eye (a franchise I'm not familiar with outside of a few City Hunter references/cameos) & a mysterious international crime syndicate who are all after a series of paintings made by the Cats' father, which hold a secret.

It's nothing groundbreaking, but a solid action flick overall (I think my favorite aspect was Zenigata teaming up with the young cop who is the Cats' foil, and who idolizes Zenigata). Didn't watch it in the most ideal of scenarios though (on a tablet in an uncomfortable hotel room chair).

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (Prime Video)

In this low budget 80's horror/comedy, a group of sorority sisters & nerdy frat boys find themselves locked in a mall overnight trying to survive after releasing an imp from it's imprisonment and it grants them a series of wishes for their deed... the effects of which start to backfire.

Really needs more of the imp. Most, if not all, of the killing is done by some of the sorority girls transformed into demons by the imp (really low budget costuming, like a bride of Frankenstein costume for one of the transformed girls), but this is assuredly a budget constraint. Otherwise it's just a schlocky budget horror from the era for better or worse, but theres definitely fun to be had in there.

Again I watched it in a not desired scenario (on a tablet, with ads, with a few brief streaming resolution drops, on an uncomfortable hotel room chair), which affected my experience.

Stuck on You! (Prime Video)

Gag/parody comedy that follows a couple going through divorce proceedings as their judge (really an angel trying to get them back together) takes them through the evolution of romance throughout history (plus flashbacks of their life together).

A much raunchier take on the type of comedy Airplane! is, it's pretty low brow, but I can't deny that there were moments that I thought were humorous or outright hilarious. I didn't watch it in the best of scenarios though (on a tablet, with ads, with a few brief streaming resolution dips, on an uncomfortable hotel room chair).

@LtSarge Yeah, you should definitely check out the Final Destination movies again. They can be quite gleefully vicious with the poor souls who tangles with the Reaper, especially in the sequels, but that is kinda part of the fun. I also love the way all the sequels manage to connect back to the first one, even though some of the connections are somewhat tenuous at times. Hope you'll enjoy them too

@RR529 Ah, Sorority Babes... is one of the classic Full Moon Features releases from the 90's, if I'm not mistaken. I used to love many of their schlocky DTV outputs back then, Crash & Burn (which for some reason my brain insists has Jeff Fahey in the lead role, which is patently untrue. Weird brain) and the Subspecies movies in particular. Never did manage to get a hold of Sorority Babes..., though. It isn't readily available on any streaming service here in Norway either, as far as I can tell, and the same seems to be true of the rest of Full Moon's 90's output, unfortunately.

anything good on Hulu this month for movies like horror movies? Been a couple of months since i last watched Prey on Hulu like 2 or 3 months ago

@LN78 Dick Tracy is a fairly bad movie but you’re dead on about the immaculate production, I’d kill for a 4K Blu-Ray. I went to see Barbie and the practical effects and set work totally reminded me of that era of filmmaking, it takes a high concept design and makes it believable using perspective and lighting.

KAIRU

Watched Pulp Fiction late last night because I couldn't sleep. Really good cast in a great movie. Uma Thurman was — and still is — something else.

The French Dispatch. Really good to be honest, the anthology element worked well with each story pulling its weight.
