Oh yeah and Simu Liu from Kim's Convenience is the main character so obviously as a Torontonian born and raised I have to do my due dilligence and watch this movie minute one
@nessisonett Judas and the Black Messiah is a film still on my radar but I've heard great things about Lakeith otherwise in other stuff
And yeah honestly I don't think there should've ever been a debate Brie wasn't a good actress because Captain Marvel's biggest problem imo lied in its script. Larson did the best she could but she's clearly done way better in stuff like Short Term 12 and Room
@TheFrenchiestFry Honestly I don’t think anybody should be judged on their acting skill in a Marvel movie. This is a franchise in which Robert Downey Jr was the main star.
@nessisonett Yeah most of his work is in Canadian television. He hasn't done much in the way of films or even mainstream TV so this is basically like the biggest gig he's ever gotten so far
He did some drama series on CBC as well as some Canadian sitcoms like Fresh off the Boat and Kim's Convenience which are basically all about Chinese-Canadian immigrant families adjusting to suburban lives, and are pretty funny if you're familiar with what it's like living in the country's more urbanized neighbourhoods
@nessisonett In this franchise you're either a no-name star who suddenly becomes a big name, a semi-big star who becomes mainstream, or a pretty major star who gets kicked off due to creative disputes like Edward Norton or only gets one movie like Sam Rockwell or Ben Kingsley
Yeah, judging Brie Larson from Captain Marvel is like judging Natalie Portman solely off her work in the SW prequels.

@ralphdibny Yeah it certainly felt more uncomfortable to watch in places than most modern horror films. Especially the last 20 mins. And your right most aren't scary these days, but there are odd ones here and there that stand out. Off the top of my head Hereditary was probably the last scariest movie I watched. Some of the others I've seen recently like The Babadook, Midsommar, Relic, The Witch, which are still ones I enjoyed, are more chilling and unnerving than out right scary.
And yeah I had loads of DVDs before I got a PS4, probably over 100 at least, but ended giving them away as I needed the space.
@JohnnyShoulder I'll have to check some of those out. You've certainly done a better job of keeping up with non-franchise movies than I have! I just don't have the time or at least it feels that way (sad, I know).
I'd love to get rid of some but I'd have no idea where to start. Theyre organised alphabetically by director, franchise, star and genre depending on which is more relevant to me or if they don't fit anywhere else. I'd be too scared to lose any dvd exclusive special features too even though I barely watch them. The amount I'd be willing to throw out would barely make a dent in them anyway so I do wonder if there's any point starting.
Many years ago, I did have the idea of ripping them all and their special features but the undertaking just seemed so great that I never got around to it. I'd love to make some space though
My wee brother went on a bit of a shopping spree with his Amazon vouchers and picked up the next 4 Bond movies in our binge, from Thunderball to Diamonds Are Forever (only about £4.50 each!) and then the 4K Raimi Spider-Man trilogy for £30. Should keep us going for a good few weeks!
@RogerRoger Films from around that era with lot of special effects are tricky to get right when mastering in 4K, as they are usually rendered in a lower resolution than the film so involves a lot of tinkering with the lighting etc to get it to look right.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but as part of the Play at Home thing, we are also getting 3 months free of Funimation, as I just got an email from them.
Right now Im watching Greenland which is pretty good.
Damn shame that Greenland along with other movies from 2020 ended up as direct to video releases.
I think Greenland would have been one of the best blockbuster movies at the movie theater if theaters last year would have opened back up in time for new movies to be shown.
You know when an actor is doing an accent that is so bad, it takes you out of the film? That is Matt Damon's in The Great Wall, who's attempt at an Oirish accent is unintentionally hilarious. Thankfully he eventually gives up and goes to gruff American, but the bad Irish accent comes back as I assume some later scenes were shot first. Unfortunately that is not the films biggest problems, as it is full of boring, bland characters. Pedro Pascal tries his best and has some nice one liners, but the attempt at buddy humour is proper cringe. There is even an attempt at romance, but the two people involved have almost zero chemistry, so that ends up feeling really flat.
On the plus side, the film look gorgeous with fantastic set designs and beautiful costumes. The colours in the soldiers armour pop, and the flaming cannon balls fizzle off the screen. Some of the action scenes are enjoyable, however they are let down by dodgy looking cgi in places. And once you have seen the first big action scene, the film never really expands on this, and later ones feel a bit regurgitated.
So overall, not a great watch and I do not recommend The Great Wall.

I'm willing to give the new mortal kombat movie a shot. As a massive fan of the games and one of those few who has enjoyed all of them since the original i feel there's plenty i might enjoy about the reboot. I'm okay with dumb fun once in a while. Every movie doesn't have to be oscar worthy.
I honestly loved the 1995 original but now i can see just how cheesy and awful it really was. I mean for starters it was PG 13. What were they thinking? A series made popular by the blood and guts but lets take that out and kiddie it up. Yeah and the costumes look like crappy cosplay compared to the reboot.
Speaking of crap how bout that MK annihilation? I'm still having night terrors over that one. At the time i was actually taking karate classes and me and the other students in my class got to go see it. within literally the first 5 minutes i knew it was going to be awful. An almost complete recast and Johhny cage gets his neck broke in the opening scene. Yeah talk about a cinematic abortion!
