I just heard about this game today, and the reviews have been really great. It looks like Skyrim, and apparently has all the trappings that you’d want and expect from an open world RPG.
Anyone playing this? I picked it up today and I’m looking forward to starting it soon!
I picked this up on PC and was shocked by how much I enjoyed it out of the gate. I have liked Elder Scrolls games less over the years, and I think a big part of the reason I liked Avowed, is it was less Elder Scrolls and more BioWare.
Fall of Avalon, at least in the opening hours I played, feels like it exists in somewhere of a middle space between the two camps for great effect, for me.
Story is lavishly presented, combat feels surprisingly good and the cartoonish ragdolling of the corpses makes things a treat, it uses a fast rotating loadout system kind of like Avowed, so I have dual wield spells, sword and board and a longbow and I can rapidly weave from one to the other as combat demands and it has this day / night cycle with the Wyrdness falling over the land at night with certain transformative effects on things, giving your adventures out into the open world a risk reward dynamic, as you don't want to be in the middle of nowhere when the Wyrdness falls, unless you are prepared.
One thing I'm not so hot on so far is the messy levelling system. Using bows levels up your archery stat, blocking with a shield ups your blocking stat and so on, but it isn't super clear to me what this is really doing. You also get to put in more general points manually into things like health, spell damage, melee damage, crit etc which then confuses me further because then what is my one handed level 20 stat meant to mean, and the skill tree is serviceable, if not necessarily the most exciting thing in the world.
I’m definitely interested as Arthurian lore is one of my favourite mythologies but have heard that at this point it runs pretty badly on console (PS5, PS5 Pro & Series X), so it might be worth waiting this one out until they get it appropriately patched.
Just to let you all know, the demo is on an old build of the game and doesn't carry over your progress, so you're probably better just buying the game, playing it for an hour and a half and then deciding if you want to refund.
