Topic: Should I play Dragon's Dogma?

TraCuz-

Back with some feedback of my 4-5 hours with Dragon's Dogma.

TL;DR - This game holds up surprisingly well in 2022 and I am full aboard the Dragon's Dogma 2 hype train, even with the little slice I've played. I can see why people hold it in incredibly high regards. If you're a person that likes fantasy worlds, action combat, customizable party and RPG elements this game could be for you.

Wow I'm impressed with how this game has been keeping my attention, and I'm upset I missed this absolute gem in 2012, very ahead of it's time. While playing it I can't help but think about my Elden Ring adventures earlier this year. One thing I, and most people enjoyed about Elden Ring were the Ashes of War; imagine being able to put 3 ashes of war on one weapon! That's what it's like in Dragon's Dogma, and not to mention the pawn system. This is a really cool way to handle a party system, you make your own "main pawn" and are able to select 2 other pawns that other players have made. Although I've already been trolled so watch out, somebody made a pawn that didn't have weapons, so they were literally useless in all combat encounters. I like that the pawns learn and adapt over time, they learn the new places you travel to, new items, new combat tactics, etc. Also being able to grab/climb on enemies adds new flavor, and immersion to the combat. I've heard some people liken it to Shadow of the Colossus, but I've never played that (blasphemy I know!) so unsure how it relates. But in my mind I relate to Monster Hunter being able to mount enemies and attack them.

Overall really impressed with how this game holds up. If you're able to get over the dingy, grainy look of some older PS3 games, some dated animation work, and old AI shenanigans/repetitive voice lines; you're likely to find a gem here. In an age where there's tons of games to play and not enough time to play them, I can easily seem myself taking this one to completion. Dragon's Dogma 2 can't come soon enough!

The REAL hidden gem is being able to grab children and throw them from cliffs!
10/10 for kid tossing!

@TraCuz- I’m glad you’re enjoying it after all the praise we have the game

Have you been exploring at night? I seem to remember it being quite an unsettling feeling with the harder enemies and the surrounding darkness.

One of the main things I remember with this game was coming across a giant cyclops in a mine who is was clearly under levelled to face but spent days trying to defeat him, ultimately for almost no gain whatsoever.

@TraCuz- sounds awesome… almost everyone who I’ve ever heard speak about it makes it sound awesome… why haven’t I found the time to start this yet!?!? 🤷‍♂️

**** DLC!

@TraCuz- Thanks for the comments!

DD is in my Switch backlog, and next to play once I've wrapped up Sunbreak.

Sounds ideal, would hope it runs smoothly on Switch (which it should, being PS3 era?)

@JohnnyShoulder Cheers mate, very informative and well balanced

Based on that read, I’ll stick with Switch version and have DD as my side-game when travelling with work… makes sense to keep PS5 for current/next gen!

@TraCuz- Glad your enjoying it. I'm curious, what class are you playing?

TraCuz-

@Thrillho Yeah it's been great, and I'm still in the first town area so not too much exploration for me yet. I also have a very fond memory with that cyclops, I love how natural that level felt. It's built around player intuition, which I really enjoyed. Awesome that such an old game can still feel so epic.

@colonelkilgore Hey man I recommend it, if you're ever able to free up a 3-4 hour window give it a fair shake

@CJD87 Oh nice, this would actually really cool to have in a portable manner. Let me know how it plays on Switch!

@Elodin Unfortunately I don't know the actual name of it, but I have daggers and a bow. I've been liking the versatility, and after watching pawns use other vocations I think it is the one for me. Although I will still try the other ones.

@TraCuz- yeah I think you’re right… I’m gonna definitely make a start on it at some point as not only have too many people gave it high praise but also the fantasy rpg is a favourite flavour of mine. I got a few games lined up atm but I’m intending to start it before the year is out for sure.

Back in here to mention that the OST in this game is amazing!! The game gets better and better the more I play, just switched my class to a magick archer and it's probably my favorite so far.

Incredible RPG experience, sad and happy that I'm just now discovering it.

@TraCuz- Phew! I’m relieved that we didn’t lead you astray with the praise. Glad to see that it’s clicked for you.

@Th3solution It's incredible, my hype levels for the sequel are through the roof. Every time I play I find myself trying to picture what a current gen version would be like. Even with my humble 7-10 hours into the game I can see why they've taken so long to announce the sequel. I can't imagine the amount of work that goes into making a game like this.

Besides the cons of the game being older (dated graphics and sometimes slow reacting pawn AI) it's pretty much perfect (to me). I have little to no complaints about the game. Hopefully there isn't something in the mid/late game that will drastically change this view.

@TraCuz- Oh, I think it sounds like you’ll be happy with the game through to the end. I don’t recall anything catastrophic happening to sour things in the latter parts. If anything, the game does seem to go pretty long and might get close to overstaying it’s welcome. Honestly, I don’t remember how it ended, only that there was still more content that I could have kept playing it for, including the Dark Arisen added content, but I was already moving on to other games by then.

But I agree with you — really they don’t need to make major changes to the gameplay or mechanics, because it plays great and has ideas that are still fresh, like the combat, enemies, and pawn systems. So if they can just clean up a little of the jank and get it graphically updated and 60fps, that would be enough. I’m sure they can also enhance and expand on the pawn system and also introduce other asymmetric online features, perhaps looking to Death Stranding and other current games as an example. I worry they may try to “Dark Souls-ify” (or more appropriately “Elden Ring-ify”) the gameplay and put in co-op and PvP invasions, etc. which I just don’t think it needs. Just make the AI better for the pawn system and keep it pure to its existing structure.
