@BearsEatBeets i was away this weekend but stayed up to date via radio and saw the start and end of the race on my phone. Seemed like a cracker. Another well deserved win for Piastri and McLaren who are into the lead in the constructors. That didn't seem realistic after 10 races, when Max had won 7, even with Checo misfiring, but here we are, good stuff.
Lando closed his gap on Max but only by a bit and the average number of points needed to beat him by each race actually increased. That yellow was very unfortunate and costly. Title still seems a bit of a long shot BUT if Max keeps finishing off the podium and Lando can win a few the gap could quickly shrink. But races are running short and it's "if, if, if".
@BearsEatBeets Completely agree about Bearman and Colapinto, great drives. I liked Lewis short but sweet post race chat where he praised them and said F1's future is bright.
I have no idea where qualifying will go. McLaren seem to just have the edge but if one of about 7 drivers puts a good lap together now they could be ok pole.
@themightyant Qualifying has become so much more exciting this season.
Great pole for Lando but he's probably a bit annoyed Max has managed get up alongside him. Hopefully the Mercs/Piastri have better race pace/strategy to get past Max in the race. Disaster Q3 for Ferrari.
@BearsEatBeets yes winning and Max coming second would actually make his job harder next race. He needs to start eating into that gap not nibbling at it. Hopefully Mercedes and Oscar can push Max down and we all thought Ferrari would be in there helping widen that gap too. But fair play to Max he pulled out a top lap at the right time at a track they usually aren’t great at.
@themightyant Definitely, considering how the RB rarely does well there, and their form of late, that is a hell of a lap from Max. Great performance by Hulk also and another good display from Colapinto to be so close to Albon.
Did you catch all the press room stuff afterwards with Max? Thought it was funny.
@themightyant Hopefully you know about him being given a 'community service' style sanction from FIA for swearing.
This is the first press event after that.
Slightly odd race. A lot of people driving in their own space but it was kinda exciting due to Singapore’s brutal conditions . Even Lando miles up the road was struggling and several times almost binned the car, great skill shown from all to finish with no safety car. Colapinto continues to impress.
@themightyant Yeah weird one. Ultimately not tons happening but also kind of nervous energy to it. Lando's 2 close calls and a lock up lapping Colapinto certainly had me concerned for a mishap. Apparently first time there hasn't been a safety car in a long time (if ever) so probably the first a lot of the drivers have done a full race flat out in those conditions.
Ricciardo taking the fastest lap didn't sit well with me. For a brief moment I couldn't fathom why the team would bother to do do that then of course realised who owns them. Happy for him to get the driver of the day from the fans as a show of appreciation though.
Pretty scummy the way Red Bull handled Ricciardo's departure from the team. I find it hard to believe they couldn't have made the decision before the race so everyone would have known it was his last one.
Curious to see how Lawson gets on though. If he does well I can easily see him taking Perez's seat next season.
@BearsEatBeets I agree. Though at the same time I don’t think they have fully ruled out Ricciardo for next year if Lawson doesn’t perform. Though he’s down well when he stepped in before. If he does the same they are more likely to go with the younger prospect with more chance to improve.
Nice to have F1 back after the big break and it's off to a good start with that Sprint race. I think the Austin track is among the best of the season. Going to squeeze some gaming in before main Quali later.
@BearsEatBeets Yes, just caught up after a night out.
Good lap from Lando, though he got lucky with flags on second lap, he looked down and several drivers were significantly up, likely wouldn’t have been on the front row.
What are you playing? I’ve been playing The Plucky Squire
@themightyant I suppose Lando could consider it a bit of payback for his bad luck at Baku. After the sprint I'm not sure if he will be able to keep ahead of Max and possibly the Ferraris but hopefully if he keeps the lead the clean air will help him stay in front.
Currently I've got back into X Com 2. After completing a War of Chosen playthrough I realised there was a DLC I didn't have and was cheap so playing that now.
@PorkChopExpress Not sure if I'll ever get back around to visiting the US but if I get a chance I'd love to go there for the F1 or some other racing event. Such a well designed track.
Fun race. I think they were right to penalise Lando at the end. But there needs to be some consistency, there were a lot of similar moves that weren’t penalised.
Max also defended brilliantly on the whole, not a lot you can do when he defends so well. But again we see him over running his defence not making the corner and the other guy gets penalised. He knows what he’s doing.
But Lando also needed to be stronger off the start and cut Max off properly not the half hearted effort he did, then he probably wouldn’t be in that situation. I think he’s too nice at times and if he wants to win championships he needs to close the door, get his elbows out in those situations, not leave a gap up the inside.
Felt a bit for the Ferraris they had great races but weren’t really featured, but could be a 3 was play for the constructors.
Great comeback drive from George for 6th, maximised the points available to him. Would have liked to have seen Lewis’ first lap where he went from the pit lane to 12th, didn’t see what happened to get that snap, seemed out of nowhere. Shame as I was looking forward to seeing him scythe through the field.
Final word for Colapinto and Lawson, great drives.
@themightyant yeah I agree with all your points. I think they might need to look at maybe adjusting the rules or something though. As Jenson mentioned, Max has learnt that as long as he has the inside he doesn't need to even make the corner and can break as late as needed and both cars will go wide and therefore not be allowed to pass. Think it's odd that we have not seen the onboard for Max for that corner.
Your right Lando was too nice at the first corner, probably thinking most drivers wouldn't try to squeeze in that gap and still make the corner. I think after the race he called himself a Muppet, or something like that, for his defending (or lack of)in the first corner.
That's the drivers title over for me. Only a Max DNF with Lando winning for the next race would put it back on. The constructors could be great battle the whole way though.
Yeah awesome work from Colapinto and Lawson. The former definitely deserves a seat for next season and I already think Lawson will get Perez's seat next season.
