Topic: Online connection speeds

SirPhipps

Hi guys,
Me and my wife are getting tired of sharing battlefield online time and not being able to play together on many many games.
We have everything but a second playstation, what speed do you think we would need for two playstations to run simultaneously on the same server?
Our Internet is kinda woeful (13mbps download, 1mpbs up load), even myself playing rocket league, and her watching a video can lag.

Thanks
Conor

@SirPhipps More is more.

But availability and budget are always factors. As is location, especially for anyone in the US since net neutrality etc.

I live in the UK and have a 100mbs connections through Virgin Media. It's relatively expensive and their customer service is awful - but the connection is always solid.
I can quite easily download at high speed and stream music and game online.

Best to check what your local ISPs can offer. Be mindful of connection hardware, whether they use proxy hardware, as well as quoted speeds and restrictions/throttling.

@KALofKRYPTON Thanks for replying,
I'm. Using sky broadband, and in the area I'm in (Brightonish) it's slow as a snail anywhere. I'm just thinking same server, same information being downloaded, but it's difficult to test without trying I guess!

@SirPhipps My parents live in a quite rural area and with their old provider they were getting 2.5-3.5mbps download speeds. Used to drive me up the wall. Couldn't watch a game of football on Now TV without it buffering and pixelating all the time.

They have recently switched to BT Infinity, basically because they are the only providers of fibre optic (which is what you want to go for ideally) in the area. Think he is paying about £30 a month for that which also includes line rental and free landline calls. His download speeds are in the 30-60mps bracket now and he has been very impressed with their customer service.

Bizarrely they were paying more for the old service, which I almost fainted when I found out!

@JohnnyShoulder thanks for replying!
I've found it to be about £30 for 30-60mbps in my area which to me is faster than sonic being pushed by the flash, I'm paying £20 a month anyway so for and extra £10 a month to play medic/support to my wife, can't complain to that!

@SirPhipps Sky are good with a lot. But my partner uses them too, and they very rarely get anywhere near the advertised speeds.

Virgin is solid, and as @JohnnyShoulder says, I know a few people happy with BT Infinity too.

@SirPhipps I've got Virgin too and they are a great ISP. I haven't found their customer service lacking either but I suppose that's as I haven't really had many problems. I think mine is the 200 meg one (it the top one they offer) and we always have loads of devices going and no trouble at all. It isn't cheap though.

@crippyd Price wise I'm not too fussed, I just need to make sure it's quick enough for the two consoles. Sky quote me the £30, and if its double what I'm getting now, in theory it should work...

KALofKRYPTON

@SirPhipps Well, my Virgin 100Mbs Optical Fibre is £35 per month. But that is just the internet without TV or phone or anything. I think it's probably cheaper with those tbf.

@KALofKRYPTON Just got off the phone to sky, obviously they magically waved of the installation fee, and some other bits. Got a minimum 40mbps speed for £30 which land-line ect so that should be enough to carry us both through games easily.
Even if it's payday 2 and its just a lan connection!

Thanks for the help everyone

@SirPhipps No worries.

I'd recommend getting Speedtest set up once they've set it up and check it throughout the day.

It usually takes a few days for speeds to normalize, your probs best of doing all the checks till then.

@SirPhipps

I used play online with a downdload speed of 2mbs upload was about 0.3 and could run any game online without problem.

@hotukdeals I used to play UT on dial up (56kbps) - packet size matters dude.

We used to have PLDT, which was the strogest and most solid connection we ever had. But got banned cause my father didnt pay the bills and was forced to use Globe which is the worst thing ever. I can have 5-50mbps (the fastest net I will ever get) if Im using mobile data outside the house, depends. But if Im using our home wifi (rural area) its just 100kbps-2mbps if lucky. I get disconnected most of the time and slows down like every 20 minutes. They cant load videos except on youtube and not stable enough for online gaming due to frequent disconnection. But then again this is the cheapest we could get for $24 USD (converted from PHP)
