If you’re a lawyer working for Sony’s legal department, you may want to rest up while you have the opportunity – a multitude of lawsuits are coming your way.
The platform holder – already battling various suits around the world regarding its control of the PS Store – is about to be faced with many more, with two in particular upping the ante in the wake of its decision to cease manufacturing physical discs in 2028.
One Dutch group – already locked in battle with the Japanese manufacturer – says this decision proves its point, as it seeks €400 million (~$457 million) from Sony due to its control of the PS Store.

It argues that the elimination of purchasing options, furthered by the removal of physical discs, will result in higher prices for consumers due to a lack of competition.
Meanwhile, a very similar case in Mexico seems imminent, as lawmakers plan to appeal to the South American country’s National Antitrust Commission, imploring the agency to investigate the platform holder.
Sony, to be fair, has said it will continue to supply retailers with products to sell – likely in the form of codes-in-a-box, like GTA 6. This could be a crucial detail that will get it off the hook with regulators.
Either way, expect many, many, many more of these cases to emerge over the coming years; I don’t think this is going away until lawmakers like the EU rule definitively on what’s acceptable practice for the sale of digital goods on closed platforms like PlayStation consoles.
