Topic: Favourite Moment in a game?

What is your favourite moment in a video game? Mine would probably be the Penguin calling Batman a "w*nker" in Batman: Arkham City, completely non-sequitur and random, most amusing.

To elaborate, The Penguin has not been a Brit, in other depictions of the character, and it is most undignified and humiliating for Batman to be challenged with the words "Come on yer w*nker!" It is simply not befitting of his position as Gotham's Dark Knight. And I will just add that the penguin expressed in other iterations of the character is not a lowly thug but a serious contender for one of Batman's greatest, or at least, most notable villains. I mean, can you imagine the joker ever saying "Come on ,yer w*nker!" to Batman? No, I think not. Case closed.

I loved the intro in Death Stranding when you see what happens if a corpse isn’t properly disposed of. It was all presented in a manner akin to epic blockbuster cinema. Then the genius move of your first mission after the intro being to dispose of a corpse that has genuine emotional resonance for the protagonist . An absolute master stroke.

So much so that the missus and I are looking to buy a new house in the new year where I’ll be having a gaming room (I currently game in the Lounge/Living Room). One of the first things I’ll be doing is to get one of the walls covered in a self-designed wall-paper panorama of the classic image when Sam Porter has an enormous crater on the ground in front of his feet and those five floating black figures in the sky above him... absolutely beautiful, in a nightmarish way.

@colonelkilgore Yeah I've played that game so I know what you're talking about, arguably a great game, no worries regarding the spoilers as I'm familiar with that scene. Good luck on your mural, also, what do you reckon about music? I've never seen what your taste in music is ,so feel free to hit me up in The Music Thread sometime.

Sorry for the reply in this thread but I’m here now so here goes, as ‘uncool’ as it seems to most people I’m far more of a ‘visual’ than an ‘auditory’ person, which is not to say that I do not appreciate music but that it doesn’t ‘hit’ me in the same way it does most other people. Having said that, I frikkin loved the Death Stranding soundtrack. All of the From Soft games have unbelievably good scores and the Nier: Automata OST is phenomenal.

I rarely actually listen to music but every now and then a song ‘creeps’ in to my being and I can’t do anything but keep listening to it. No particular consistency of genre either, could be anything: James Blake - Retrograde, Galantis - Peanut Butter Jelly, Jay Z - Encore, Lourdes -Team, Radiohead - Karma Police, Midge Ure’s version of Bowie’s - The Man Who Sold The World... and many others. As boring as it sounds, I would normally have a podcast on in the background over having some music on though.

The end of Blue Reflection. I got real tears from it. Sadly, it only happens once.

The PSVR is the best VR system on the market today.

Hmm, this is a hard one. I do have a few in mind though.

The Ashtray Maze in Control. Proper good fun with a consistent theme and a great, condensed blast of the combat system showing it off to its fullest.

Leaving Midgar for the first time in the original Final Fantasy VII. Now I won’t see this very often anymore because I have a save after Midgar to avoid my least favourite section in an RPG but it was really cool to see a world map of that size and realise that Midgar was only a tiny section of a far larger world.

The big spoilery event in Final Fantasy VI - you know the one. It’s the moment a game goes from being a standard Final Fantasy save the world type deal into a non-linear trek across a broken world looking for essentially vengeance.

The Giygas fight in Earthbound. Terrifying and just plain weird. A really creepy ending to a great game.

The truth being revealed right near the end of Silent Hill 2/the opening hour of the game. Both are brilliant in their own right and create as many questions as answers.

The white phosphorus moment in Spec Ops: The Line. That’s the moment when you realise you’re playing an extremely rare game - a shooter with a brain.

Metal Gear Solid 2’s glitch out. Mind boggling the first time, absolutely hilarious every time since.

I think my number 1 would have to be pulling out the Master Sword for the first time in Ocarina of Time. It feels like you’re running out of things to do as you’ve travelled across the whole map and the game’s building up to a finale. Then you pull the Master Sword and the world goes to pot. The complete shift in tone is staggering and when you step out the Temple of Time, you’re greeted with a truly horrible sight. Just brilliant.

Good call on the Ashtray Maze - really enjoyed Control and that was probably the highlight.

Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid and fourth wall breaking shenanigans. That blew my mind back then, and still to this day it has not been beaten.

My favourite and most emotional moment in a game is the microwave corridor in MGS4. That sequence really chokes me up. That's all I can think of right now but I probably have a few other moments to post in future when i think of them.

See ya!

ApostateMage

The recruit Thane Krios mission from Mass Effect 2. My absolute favourite mission from the entire series and BioWare at their very best.

It’s hard to pinpoint one moment as a favorite, but I have complied some of the moments that are the most memorable to me.

Most of the gaming moments that stick out in my memory tend to be impactful endings. Therefore, high on my list of gaming moments is the ending of The Last of Us, the ending of Bioshock Infinite, and the ending of Red Dead Redemption. Also can’t forget the true ending of NieR Automata, the ending of Death Stranding, and the ending of The Walking Dead. And I’ll never forget how I felt finishing Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

I won’t go into detail on the specifics of any of those so as to avoid spoilers, but I do have a moment forever seared in my memory that came closer to the beginning of a game — coming face to foot with the first Colossus in Shadow of the Colossus. The first time you approach one of those enormous mythical creatures it’s just jaw dropping. The sense of scale and wonder is forever in my memory.

Another random gaming moment that will evermore haunt my memory is Lewis’s story at the cannery in What Remains of Edith Finch. The whole sequence is brilliant and the conclusion just made me gasp in a way I’ve never felt during a game.

Another one I frequently mention as memorable is the ending to Quiet’s storyline in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It was a really moving scene the way her arc finished.

And who can ever forget slaying their first boss in a FromSoft game. I think he’s the second boss, but I’ll never forget my jubilance when I finally beat Father Gascoigne in Bloodborne. I thought I’d never get past him and pound for pound I’d still consider him one of the toughest fights in the game.

And finally, I’ll never forget the moment my first platinum trophy popped. It was PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royal and I was so young and naive at the time. But you never forget the first time.

@Th3solution Lewis’ story in Edith Finch is right up there for me too. It’s breathtaking and then hits you like a truck.

So I’ve already included one but the missus and I were watching some Sounds of the 80’s show and it reminded me of another moment which is nowhere near as poignant but was great in a more ‘setting the scene’ kinda way.

I was explaining to the missus how GTA3 got me back into gaming and how in the lead up to Vice City, I couldn’t understand why they went 80’s with its pseudo-sequel. THEN, you get in/on your first vehicle and Billie Jean plays and it all makes sense...

@Arugula At least I was already used to really long ladders before I played MGS3, there’s a comically long one in Skies of Arcadia!

@Arugula Not sure how I forgot the train sequence in Uncharted 2. I really need to replay that game and see if it holds up to my memory.
