@nessisonett I was of course not arguing against the fact that companies are greedy by the way. 🌞

@Th3solution there are exceptions, I bought elden ring at launch. But I wait for sales, as my backlog is big enough to wait. I just wondered if people really were waiting on sales. As for Sony lowering the launch price? I doubt it.

@nessisonett I'm sure the poor reception and initial sales, soured Sony on the idea of days gone 2. Yes, eventually, DG reached 8+ million sold. But how much was through sales, etc. Which once again hurts sequels and new IPs.

@herculean I like to play the money game with devs:
Let's say 100 dev team

  • 100 workstations, top tier, maybe laptops as well
  • work space, whether buying or renting
  • employees, varying salaries for varying jobs
  • fees for licenses and game engines
  • testing, testers
  • marketing

Feel free to add others..

@PhhhCough I’m just wondering if Elden Ring has just reset the whole market — it going for $60 and lighting sales charts ablaze. It’s got to get Sony’s attention that one of their big ace-in-the-hole games, HFW, can barely keep up with a third party new IP that is selling for $10 cheaper. GoW Ragnarok is their last chance to re-establish the premium value of first party to be worth $70. I don’t think Forspoken or The Quarry are going to accomplish that.

Elden Ring has convinced me that GamePass hasn’t killed new game sales on Xbox, which I am actually surprised and will admit I was wrong. I thought it would sell 4:1 on PlayStation, but it looks like just as many Xbox players are buying it as PlayStation. Also Elden Ring shows also that the $60 price point is still very profitable for a AAA game. Elden Ring is making me eat crow on my predictions and I think Sony is too.

@lolwhatno I always found discipline comes easy when you're motivated enough. There's two types of motivation, though: intrinsic and extrinsic. The latter one I found to be weaker in general, and makes it harder to be disciplined. 🌞

@lolwhatno The word "depressed" gets thrown about pretty lightly. Heck, even I'll admit that I've used it in an almost throwaway fashion before, and I'm somebody who genuinely does suffer with depression.

But there's also the fact that the internet can be an outlet for those predisposed to depression, and so you're more likely to encounter people who struggle with depression in a place where they congregate to find comfort, or which they can use anonymously as an outlet for their feelings. On the flipside to that, there's also the fact that everything gets dialled up to eleven on the internet, so love becomes obsession, mild frustration escalates to outrage and yeah, sadness will get described as depression.

Makes social media a real scary place to be sometimes, as it all feels super-intense, all the time.

@lolwhatno I agree with you and @RogerRoger about the usage of some legitimate terms like depression and obsessive-compulsive to describe feelings and traits rather than the true disorders that we associate them with. I try to be sensitive to this and so usually will emphasize my obsessive or compulsive tendencies (for example when I talk about my open world checklisting) rather than actually having OCD, as in the disorder, as defined by an actual mental health diagnosis (which I don’t actually have). Because I do think it’s a bit inappropriate and trivializing to those who actually do suffer with the condition and I would never want to equate my minor quirk to that person’s actual clinical issue. The same applies if I say I feel depressed, which shouldn’t mean I have clinical depression, as in the disorder which requires medication or professional intervention. It’s like I can say I am anxious about something yet I don’t have an anxiety disorder, per se. And so on.

On the flip-side, I also recognize the fact that information access has probably uncovered more depression and conditions like it which would go unnoticed in the pre-information age of internet and social media. So there very well could be a whole lot of clinical depression out there which wouldn’t have been picked up otherwise.

But I absolutely agree that most of what you read and see on the internet social spaces has to be dialed back a few notches in order to reveal the true situation. It seems like everything is catastrophized or overstated once it reaches social media. All sense of nuance and balance is lost and I think much of that has to do with the fact that 90% of communication is nonverbal. (Ok, I just pulled the “90%” number out of the air, but it’s probably something like that) Even with things like Tik Tok and video clips, it’s hard to tell if the person is being genuine even when you can see their nonverbal cues since half the time their delivery is hyperbolic in order to get clicks.

@lolwhatno Given how widespread mental health issues are in today’s world both due to how much of a mess the planet is and also the fact people feel they can open up about it, I’d say there’s more people suffering from depression than you’d realise. Of course some people jump to hyperbole but a lot of people probably would have just put up with their mental health 10 or 20 years ago but now feel like they can address it.

@nessisonett The fact that there were 4.3 million mental health referrals in the UK alone in 2021 would tend to bear this out.

@LN78 Ooft, that’s even more than I was expecting. Understandable though, with everything going on.

@nessisonett Good point, especially when backed up with that powerful statistic from @LN78 there. It seems a little scary to consider the scale at first, but I think it's broadly positive that more people are starting to recognise what these issues are, and learning how to address them.

This probably belongs in the music thread but Fionna Apple's "Criminal" was on the radio the other day and while listening for some reason I wondered, is she being sarcastic? Grew up listening to her and I've heard that song a million times but that's the first time it's ever occurred to me that maybe she's being insincere.

Anyway, I think it fits her better that way.

Have you ever read the fun fact that a raccoon can fit up your, well your you know.

So if thats the case? Did anyone ever try to see if it was legit? Probably not because then you would probably get infected with something, but it does make for a great insult seeing if you can actually do it, you can actually tell someone to do so LOL.

There's absolutely no reason for the north pole to be at the top of our world maps. It could just as easily have been the south pole, had certain leaders of certain countries decreed it. I saw an upside down map of the world that some Australian guy did, but with all the countries/cities' names the right way up. The massive bulk of Africa looked so much more significant in the grand scheme of things, and the Australasian countries and islands looked far more impressive.

Also I've enjoyed catching up on this thread.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

@Gremio108 interestingly, the continents and countries on the world map as we know it are not the size that they are in reality.

It’s easy to assume Greenland is as big as Africa, but it is much smaller in reality! Russia is a lot smaller, too. (..for now :/)

@Gremio108 @kyleforrester87 I recently saw correctly sized Ireland and was amazed about how large it actually is. I swear the news in the UK purposefully makes them look smaller!

@lolwhatno So it’s possible we all have the same favorite color, but we just call it something different. 🤔
