@sorteddan
Thanks for the tips although I did give it a fair shake and made it past the first puzzle in the apartments. It was the apartments that made me bin it, every apartment being the same (as you would mostly guess) and not really knowing where I was going or what I was trying to do.
But it is a me issue I think as I’m rushing through games atm as my PS sub is ending so I’m trying to clear backlog and also take on new EXTRA games in the remaining days. I will be pleased when I’m free of the shackles.
As for Creed games both Origins and Odyssey are great, Odyssey’s Kassandra character is brilliant and it feels like Ubisofts attempt at a Witcher style game so if you like the Witcher perhaps give that game a go.
@JohnnyShoulder I definitely intend to give Control a proper shot after having previously just booted it up for one or two hours! I wonder how it'll be to experience the AWE expansion after having played the follow-up. I'm sure it'll still stand on its own since it needed to appeal to players who only played the main game and are not familiar with the Alan Wake lore, but I wonder if my having played the sequel will spoil the experience or just have it add more context to the going-ons of what I've already seen play out. Glad you enjoyed the Time Breaker episode! It really was very creative. Do let me know what you think of The Lake House DLC when you finish it as such a fan of Control. I really enjoyed it despite lacking context, so I can only imagine how satisfying it must be for someone already heavily invested in that lore.

@sorteddan Glad to hear you've been enjoying Silent Hill 2! I think you nailed it with the sound design particularly being what makes the atmosphere of that game stand out so much. I do wish I'd be less desensitized to horror so that I could experience the full fear in its intended form. As it stands, it sadly takes a lot for any piece of entertainment to truly scare or unsettle me. There's no denying that they nailed the atmosphere even to me though, which in and of itself already is plenty of praise! The amount of health drinks and syringes you have frankly shocks me. I think I was running low on them basically at all points! Maybe I was too trigger happy with using them or simply not cautious enough when engaging in combat.
Funnily enough, my friend had the exact same experience missing out on the gun in the prison. It seems to be a shared horror for many! Unfortunately, he had to revert even further since it had been a while since he saved. He basically had to replay the entire prison section and lead-on to it, but he persevered through the repetition. Not that I think he minded, since he's already replayed the whole game once a few months later. Happy it doesn't sound like it detracted from your fun either having to replay a part... plus saving on shotgun shells is always useful in survival horror! Do you think you'll move onto Silent Hill f quickly after finishing this one? I haven't gotten to it yet, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts as someone who's been with the franchise for a long time and the changes it has made to the formula.
@CaptD
Ha yeah I did a similar approach when my extra was running out last August... Then they added SH2 and around black Friday I saw that to resubscribe till next August would cost around the same as I was looking to pay for that game so was kind of a no brainer. I've already played a handful of shorter games from it (Sword of the Sea being the standout) and reckon it I can beat this and TLoU 2 then it will have been worthwhile... Damn Sony and their ways!
@Tjuz
To be fair I've just wasted a bunch of healing stuff to get past the Eddie encounter, though having the rifle and an abundance of ammo for it may be saved some time. Probably not looking to pick up SHF any time particularly soon... Need to tackle some of the backlog and prioritise the games I want to play that I've been putting off for too long. Am definitely going to immediately head back into this one though cos those baddies are gonna get some chainsaw wrath on NG+... May even stick around and see how many endings I can pick up.
Anyhow, just made it to the hotel which I think is the last major location so will hopefully complete first run by the weekend.
Defeated Godfrey, Golden Shade and Morgott, the Omen King this afternoon with the help of my Mimic Tear+6 Summon. I understand it now as a light power fantasy, similar to Sekiro, not quite the same, but fun all the same. I'm having an excellent time. I'm having a real blast with the build. It's definitely not as intimidating as I first expected it to be. Souls is truly easy with the right build, man.
@sorteddan Not surprised you went through a lot of items with the Eddie boss fight! That one kicked my butt a little too. And yeah, you're definitely getting to the final part of the game. Just a few hours left when completing at a reasonable pace. Let me know what ending you end up getting! I kinda love how obscure the conditions are for each ending. You should be able to pick up quite a few endings on your second playthrough. I believe that my friend added three to the tally upon his replay with the help of some smart reloading here and there.
Bit of a mixed bag today… both of which being pretty positive I suppose.
Finally experienced some Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver this morning, after 26 years of missing out. When it released on PlayStation back in ‘99, I’d already moved onto Dreamcast… and then when it got ported there, I almost pulled the trigger but ended up buying something else (Soulcalibur I think). It was a decent first session. No doubt it would’ve blew my doors off back in the day… but it does feel old and unfortunately I don’t have any nostalgia. I ain’t moaning though, it’s fine and I just really appreciate the chance to finally play it all told.
Then this afternoon I started my co-op playthrough of Gears of War: Reloaded on Insane. I definitely think it’s a better experience in co-op than solo but still feeling a little underwhelmed. Made some decent progress and we’re probably around halfway through-ish. Will have our second (& hopefully final) co-op sesh on the weekend. Once that’s done, it’ll be on to the mp grind… which I’ll be on for the foreseeable.
@graymamba
I have the Gears trilogy on my Xbox and I remember not being overly impressed with GoW1, I seem to remember giving up on a boss fight where the boss was just running at me sort of like the Ram enemy in Dead Island 1 and Riptide. After that I didn’t play any more of the trilogy however Gears 5 does look fun though with the snow ski vehicle.
Anyway good luck with the MP grind.
@CaptD I know exactly the boss you’re talking about, the enemy AI is hilarious!🤣
In fairness 2 and 3 were supposedly marked improvements, so maybe they’d have clicked for you. I’ll play them if they get ported as… well, as you know, I’m an easy mark for third-person shooters.
@Tjuz I have just gotten to The Lake House DLC in the game, so will start it once I've done busy work in the game. Think I've got the final nursery rhyme to do, then I can crack on with the story.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
@graymamba I gave Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver my best shot a couple years back, and made it a good couple of sessions in, but ultimately never finished it. My thoughts aligned with yours. Best of luck with it, and if it suddenly becomes a genius masterpiece in its closing hours, please let us know!
"If I let not knowing anything stop me from doing something, I'd never do everything!"
Finished Mafia: The Old Country it was an ok game, and not my favorite in the Mafia series, 2 is still my favorite. I did finally start Clair Obscure Expedition 33 and it is a great game, it's taking me awhile to getting used to learning how to parry, dodge, jump and etc..., but I am liking the game alot so far
I'm currently playing through a game called Blood of Mehran.
It's like a cross between Assassin's Creed and God of War, with a fraction of the budget. It definitely has issues, but I'm not finding it a chore to play.
You may’ve seen that I’ve been a little luke-warm on Gears of War since I started it last weekend… but I had a real banger of a co-op session on it today tbh. Co-op definitely adds to the experience… and I’ve logged off this evening feeling really good about it.
Insane certainly posed the odd problem here and there but nothing too crazy… somewhat similar to Uncharted’s Crushing difficulty.
We’re around halfway through the final act, so hopefully we’ll have this wrapped up with our next sesh.
did a playthrough of gears of war reloaded loved the nostalgia of it and reloaded was was a very good looking game i think they did a good job with the remaster. fingers crossed they port 2,3,4,5 judgement
it was actually nice to play a shorter linear game these open world games i dread even starting them
@Tjuz Just coming out of a crazy busy stretch here but hope the holidays have treated you well!
A little bit of both. The trucking industry (particularly dangerous goods) is heavily regulated here so hours of service are legally capped at 15 within a 24 hour period. The company I work for is excellent for not pushing our drivers outside of that but special circumstances sometimes require what I’ll call, sensible solutions. As for getting paid, I get paid per load, so depending on those special circumstances (or any number of other variables), sometimes I do come out on the losing end of a delivery. It’s unfortunate but also what balancing a stable business within a volatile and unpredictable market realistically looks like, and sometimes it works the other way too.
I should also note that I thankfully wasn’t in that particular pile-up but used it as an example of how bad the weather was that day and throughout December here. Just lots of stress and lots of chaining up!
I’m really glad to hear that the game resonated with you, especially after I was singing its praises so relentlessly 😬 What I liked so much about that story is that, despite the fact that there are unanswered questions in regards to world building, the games narrative takes the themes presented by those larger mysteries and explores them in a more intimate and human story.
For instance, we don’t need to know what exactly the collective is (though the game provides plenty of fodder for the imagination to feed on), only that collectivism can lead to an inhuman, monstrous and insatiable hive mind machine. However, the game is less interested in preaching and more interested in spurring thought, so against this backdrop it gives us a story centered around The Pathfinder breaking away from this collective after falling in love with the messy imperfection of humanity. As we know, this manifests as a tragically misguided love culminating in obsession. Here, we see the equally destructive flip side of individualism. In fact, it may have even been what initially caused The Change (cue time loop shenanigans 😂…)
I love that we get to just blast headshots somewhere between these idealistic philosophical fortresses in what is also an incredibly well balanced and well considered survival horror experience.
I agree that using the gravity boots in only one particularly unique way was a real missed opportunity but I chalk that up to new I.P syndrome. Still, it’s hard in that fight not think to oneself, “This is so cool, why aren’t we doing more of this?” And then the game ends. Also, if the one travelog you missed is the one in The Warden’s piano room, then it’s the same one I missed on my initial play through!
Thanks again for the detailed reply! And yes, NeiR: Automata is absolutely worth the time but more relevantly, how’s Indiana Jones going for you? I haven’t had much time to play, so I’ve just gotten to Giza but so far I’ve been having a great time with it. They’ve done a commendable and impressive job of translating the spirit of Indy into not just a serviceable but truly great video game. Some of the touches, like picking up his hat for a second chance are just brilliant!
Currently playing through Code Violet and so far I don't hate it. Granted I'm not too far into it, but I'm enjoying the exploration and the atmosphere. I chose to play it over Ghost of Yotei and Doom: The Dark Ages. Hopefully I don't come to regret it the more I play.
@JohnnyShoulder How have you gotten on with The Lake House DLC if you've managed to finish it so far? Since you mentioned the nursery rhymes as well, I was surprised that when I finished all the cult stashes, there were quite some important manuscript pages hidden behind that lock. I suppose you would've been fine to never read them, but it did add quite a bit of necessary context to that plot in the game. That they locked it behind such a tiresome collectible shocked me!

@Metonymy The holidays were a good time, thank you! Hope you've had an equally fun time with your family and friends. I'm glad you're working for a solid company that respects its workers and adheres to the regulations. I'm sure you wouldn't be able to say that for all of them. Going to assume that this is probably not the first company you've worked for in that field! In Europe, the weather the last few weeks has been quite bad. Not sure if that's the leftovers from what you already experienced in Canada back in December, but I hope that either way you didn't come into the New Year with all too many more weather-related problems!
Totally agree that the focus on the more human side of it all worked a lot in the game's favour, even if the lore was incredibly interesting as well. If they'd focused more on explaining that side, it might've gotten a bit too lore-dumpy or theoretical. I already thought the few conversations with the Warden where you had dialogue options tended to be on the overlong, exposition-y side of the spectrum. The fact that they held back from making that an issue in the main narrative and instead focused on the human journey was probably for the better. Besides, if the success of this game is any indication, we might receive a sequel at some point that could dig deeper into the unexplored. Not that I think the game necessarily needs it, but there's at least plenty leeway into doing more with ''the Collective'' within this universe. It doesn't feel like Bloober Team is big on sequels in general however, so who knows? This might just be a one-and-done type project for them like many of their others.
I love me some time loop shenanigans, but frankly, I feel like the older I get, the more out of the loop I feel every time this comes up. That or maybe I've simply started engaging with more complicated media that also either makes more of a mess of it or is just inherently complicated in its genius. I'm not sure where this falls on that scale, but I also won't think about it too hard. The way they presented it on a surface level worked very well. As for what you mentioned about the individualism and the Pathfinder's love for humanity, the scene within the piano room was instrumental for that. And they nailed it. One of the most riveting and intellectually stimulating scenes of the whole game as far as I'm concerned. Perfectly laid the groundwork for everything to come without you realising it in the moment while being incredibly well-written as an individual scene all the same. I'm not sure who the voice actors here were, but the Warden/Pathfinder nailed the delivery of that scene as well. Just everything coming together beautifully there. I think the narrative would've hit a lot less hard had they somehow messed up that scene (or not had something similar at all). A pivotal moment!
New I.P.-syndrome is a great term that I've never heard used before, but applicable to so many things! You really can chalk the gravity boots up to that, though I do feel like they used it extensively enough in movement that they probably could've thought of using it in more than one way before the finale of the game as well. I actually did catch the travelog in the piano room, which I was proud of at the time as I figured it was one of the more missed ones. I'm not sure which one I did end up missing, but I bet it was something really stupid that if I look it up, I'll have to hit myself for it! Therefore, for my own peace of mind, I will simply assume it was an incredibly hard to find one or a bugged achievement. Works out better for me!
I haven't actually made a star on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle yet. I've gone back to The Last of Us: Part II first after I started it late last year and got distracted, so that'll be my big AAA action-adventure for coming weeks. I'll have to see if I follow it up with Indy after, but either way, I'll let you know when I do! I'm happy to hear that it's impressed you thus far. Makes it all the more promising for me after how our tastes have aligned on Cronos!
I've been playing Big Hops (an indie 3d platformer that released this week) a bit and it seems fun so far
I hear it has some issues on console but the worst I ran into was the game freezing for a few seconds when going between locations so it's nothing major yet.
It seems like just getting through the game should be reasonably easy but finishing all the optional challenges - not so much. Which sounds good to me.
I defeated Commander Niall in Elden Ring, thus enabling me to access an area that contains the materials for furthering upgrading my Mimic Tear, I was happy with the result. Definitely the toughest boss fight I've faced in the game, so far.
