I thought this would be a good post to discuss our favorite games of this current generation. With all the talk of a lack of Sony exclusives, why not flip the conversation and discuss the overall package of games — from AAA titles, AA, to indies and what stands out most to you.
For me, and this is in no specific order, I’d have to say:
1) Clair Obscur
2) Dragon’s Dogma 2
3) Lies of P
4) Silent Hill 2
5) Stellar Blade
There is also Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Sea of Stars, Unicorn Overlord, and many, many more. How about everyone else, though? Do you have top 5 that stands out the most to you, or just a list of games that have made an impact on you this generation? I’d love to hear people’s responses!
(In the order I played them/their release dates, I think)
I've kept DD2 in as I like to fight things and explore and I was really ready for that type of game at the time, and even though it had flaws, it really focused on what it did well in that regard. Little dissapointed the quests weren't quite as free form, as I had tried out the original just before DD2 came out, and felt it had some KCD type unexplainable charm and some cleverness running behind the scenes that wasn't quite there in DD2 in the same way.
Elden Ring is clear. I always describe it as full of wonder. You get slapped in this big awful world with a giant tree in the middle and you just have to find your way to all these places you can see in the distance. The boss fights can range from batsh** crazy to hypnotic, there aren't a lot of annoying run backs when you die, and as death is part of the gameplay mechanic this helps it flow a lot nicer than games with massive repetitive sections.
Stray is just exactly the kind of thing that resonates with me. Stylistically and with the simplicity of a cat and a robot being good buddies, an overall sad but hopeful tone in a sci fi/CyberPunk setting. To me, it's gives the kind of feeling you get from random independent cinema that I've always liked, but in a game.
Jusant, much the same. It's a quiet, thoughtful, and simple game. And UE5 for 4K animation with lumen and all that is really, really nice for this kind of game. I want to see more of these types of games in UE5.
BG3 is RPG bliss. Fully converted me into enjoying turn based gameplay because of the love that went in to the game. Not much needs to be said, it's a universal smash hit.
KCDII: the follow up to one of my favourite games of all time, so obviously that too. And if Clair Obscur gets all the game awards, I do hope Tom Mckay gets a massive heap of credit for making 6 or 7 different versions of his character for every scenario. The amount of random sh*t you can get Henry to say and do is how games should be made, imo, and having a voiced protagonist with a loosly defined role as a background for starters, but that the player can mould to their liking, really adds to the RP element, rather than just clicking text responses and having someone else react to it.
"Your breath smells like a horses a***hole" 🍻
Can't think of a better way to end this comment than that 😁
"Preoccupied with a single leaf, you won’t see the tree. Preoccupied with a single tree, you’ll miss the entire forest. Don't be preoccupied with a single spot. See everything in its entirety...effortlessly. That is what it means...to truly "see." "
@Ravix I completely forgot about Elden Ring and BG3. Those two will definitely be on my list as well. Great picks!
Elden Ring blew me away. It’s probably the only game that I can say captured the true sense of exploration, and mystery. Other games have done it great - Tears of the Kingdom comes to mind - but ER just had the it factor.
BG3 is the seminal RPG experience. It has an incredible story with an incredible cast, more dialogue options that can change the course of your entire playthrough in unexpected ways, sometimes good, sometimes bad. The amount of choices are unbelievable - there is so much depth to every single facet of the game - and they all have meaning. The characters are phenomenally written too, with peak story arcs and character development.
If I sit and think about it, I think BG3 is quite easily the game of the generation. It may not be mine, personally, but on a technical level I can see how it should be. Just thinking about the game now, I have a strong (dark) urge to do another run. In fact, I think I will.
@CJD87 Great picks! I forgot about Returnal. It’s a great game, but unfortunately I could never make it past the second boss. I’ve always meant to go back to it because I know I can beat it.
@Kraven indeed, indeed, two of the best games of the generation, for sure. Which is why i'm definitely going to make sure I play Clair Obscur before the game awards season, as it has had the same level of hype as ER and BG3 had, but kind of out of nowhere! I kind of wish I'd jumped on it Day One, but it took a little while to realise everyone was absolutely loving it, wheras ER and BG3 were built up to and expected.
Ah, yes! See you in the BG3 thread, then, as I'm currently on a very loose playthrough with the Dark Urge origin. I played it a bit, left it for a bit, played it a bit more a few weeks ago and got quite hooked again, then left it for a little while again, but I'm sure to be back to that save again soon. It is surprisingly easy to dip in and out of once you have one playthrough under your belt, despite it being quite complex with how you can build your party, pick and organise all your spells and actions, weapons and gear, and make a bunch of decisions you might forget about.
My only issue is, because I loved my first play through, I keep thinking I don't want to ruin the lives and stories of Astarion, Shadowheart, Karlach et al, but I do kind of want to see what happens if I make bad decisions that affect them. I loved the tragedy and redemption and visceral emotion I got to witness so much though, such great characters to journey with as their own tales take center stage more and more and end up better quality than a lot of main characters in a bunch of other regular games 😅
When it seems you're out of luck.

Honestly, not much. Still waiting for this generation to start. Mostly everything I've enjoyed has been cross-gen. Clair Obscur is the standout and maybe Returnal. I'd like to add Demon's Souls but its a PS3 game and BluePoint absolutely butchered it. I love that it now performs well but they ruined the game artistically.
I'd count Elden Ring but it released on the PS4, the platform I initially played it on. Easily one of the best games I've ever played.
Baldur's Gate 3
Silent Hill 2 (never beat, but love what I played of it)
Demon's Souls (my first time through the game, counting the original)
I can't name many others since I mostly just play cross-gen games these days. I still don't think we've seen a proper heavy-hitter on the PS5 yet. The above games come close.
Off the top of my head.
1. Returnal. The only game I was so impressed with, I wrote the company to thank them. I also feel t flew under the radar for so many. Thinking about the first climb to a boss as the organ music gets louder and louder. What a gem.
2. BG3. As a D&D nerd as well as an isometric rpg fan this is amazing. My favorite game if I had to pick one. The fact that they added mod support makes it endlessly playable.
3. Many others were great. Elden Ring, Hades, Griftlands, Slay the Spire, GoWR,...
I know this thread I created is about games, I also want to give a shoutout to a piece of hardware: the PlayStation Portal. For someone who likes playing handheld, particularly Sony games, it comes in handy when I want to watch the NBA and NFL. In fact, I probably play the majority of my games on this device. I have and still am playing Oblivion exclusively on this device and it runs flawlessly for me.
@Pizzamorg I agree - there are many other games that could have easily made the list. Cyberpunk 2077 is a great example! It’s a fantastic experience, especially the Phantom Liberty DLC!

Good shout on that actually, Cyberpunk was a mess at launch, but now with all the updates over the years + the Phantom Liberty expansion, it has become one of my favourite games of all time.
@Elodin You've piqued my interest mate... Griftlands???
Every other game you've mentioned I adore, will 100% agreement that Returnal would probably be my #1 game of the generation - even slightly above the almighty BG3.
Never heard of Griftlands, but considering our similar tastes I am intrigued
Strictly PS5 generation (current not including cross generation games):
Demon's Souls (the remake ofc ) I really enjoyed this game, it really feels like a current gen game!
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - Yes it has HUGE flaws in terms of storytelling but I enjoyed it!
Games that are between generations but are phenomenal:
1. Elden Ring - masterpiece in every sense of the word!
2. Lies of P - amazing game that grows on you if you are a souls series fan!
3. Resident Evil 4 Remake - damn what a good remake!
Griftlands is a fun and unique deck building game. If you like deck building games I think you would enjoy it. It has a loose Rpg mechanic as you pick sides. You can be liked, loved and hated. When interacting you may have to negotiate or possibly fight. You have a deck for each that you build as you go through the story. For me it was a hidden gem and looking at review scores it did well.
