@FuriousMachine good stuff. Yes, early on packs of monsters or even wolves are not so great on Death March! But at some point they become easier prey 😁

Just make sure to check those notice boards and do a little questing early on and you will level up soon enough 😁

I feel like the game does a good job of leading you past points of interest on little jaunts too, and there is always something to do for someone to tie it all together while exploring from one place to another.

Enjoy

@FuriousMachine Very interesting. Thanks for indulging my quirky transcontinental curiosities. πŸ˜„
I now turn this thread over to its regularly scheduled Witchering. πŸ˜›

@Ravix I'm using Quen liberally and have gotten fairly decent at keeping my distance, dodging and blocking until I find an opening and then unleashing steel or silver-coated fury on the poor b@stards when the time is right (this is my favourite combat style by a country mile). So, I've been managing quite okay so far; have dispatched a few Drowners, some wolves, bandits and ghouls. The ghoul nest was a challenge and I had to try it a couple of times, but got there in the end and was rewarded with my first ability point from the nearby Point of Power. Put it in the Quen ability "Active shield" (may be called something else, memory hazy). Haven't been able to see it in action yet, but hopefully tonight.
Fairly close to levelling up, I think. Should be around 100-200 XP to go, so with some active slaying and a contract or two, I'll probably get there.

@Th3solution Was my pleasure. I haven't really reflected on it before you asked, as it feels so ingrained that I never considered that it might seem a bit strange for both native English speakers and those that grew up in countries where everything is dubbed that it is like this. I know it's much the same in Sweden and Denmark; a bit unsure about Finland, but I think they also prefer subtitles to dubbing. Made me curious about how others outside of Scandinavia make use of localizations in games, particularly those coming from countries like Germany and France, which have a long tradition of dubbing movies and TV shows. I suspect younger generations are more bilingual in those places than their older counterparts. Will make a point of asking around in a dedicated thread in the near future

It's obviously way too early for a Witcher 4 thread, but I feel like we might want to talk about it a little bit since the "reveal" is fresh in our minds.

Firstly, I'll say I was a little taken aback by the unreal engine version, it looked different, for sure. A little jarring. Almost a little like the streaming series of which we shall not discuss. But of course, it also looked fooking awesome in a hyper realistic kind of way πŸ˜›

With the recent "Cockle up" I think we knew this was getting announced, right? But I still think it took people by surprise. They had to announce it though to finally confirm it's Ciri (clearly it had to be a Ciri title, come on now internet, she is the main character of the books, remember πŸ˜‰) so I'm glad we can move on from people wondering about that.

Funny thing is a few days ago I saw the Lynx logo, probably in the article about Doug Cockle, and I just thought, well it's only logical to create a new Witcher school as that is what Ciri would do. You could say the school of the Wolf died in TW3 after Geralt hangs up his swords, and of course Ciri would then want to go her own way and keep the traditions alive, with or without Geralt's input.

It's probably not worth being hyped yet purely due to release timeline, but sometimes a game just has to announce what it is so the devs can move on to focusing on the game without the intense shroud of secrecy hanging over it, now that the subject can be openly discussed. And Doug can go on to talking about how he's definitely in the game now πŸ˜…

All that's left to ponder is... will he and or Yen be kidnapped to add some family drama alongside whatever the main narrative is? And will people still be trying to impregnate her or can she just get on with business now that the time of madness and the time of contempt has passed πŸ˜›

I must admit, I didn't expect it to be shown just yet, as I suppose it's still years away. Happily surprised, though. And I actually thought they would be moving on to a whole new set of characters, so Ciri being the main character actually never entered my mind, for some reason. Again, happily surprised (though I really shouldn't have been surprised at all ).
The only thing that gives me pause is that I didn't particularly enjoy her fighting style in her sections of TW3, but I suppose there's a possibility that they will revamp the combat in this one.
Definitely looking forward to this one!

Oh, and as an aside: Has anyone here read the new book yet? I realise it hasn't been released in English just yet, but this is a hugely international crowd with quite a few multi-linguists, so if someone here has read it, I'm very curious to hear how it stacks up against the others.

Dimey

I really didn't like the Ciri sections of TW3, hated the teleporting. But the trailer does look like she no longer has those powers now, and is a proper potion drinking, sign casting Witcher (somehow).

I really hope we have some Geralt sections though, I'll miss his humour... very excited, though more hyped for Witcher 1 remake to be honest, itching for more Geralt!!!

Dimey

FuriousMachine

@Dimey Wait, there's a Witcher 1 remake coming? Interesting!

Ravix

I saw all the YouTube comments saying things like "I hope they will explain why she can do this and not this, because mehhhhhh etc"

And I'm just thinking. Well, yes. They will explain it. Obviously πŸ˜…

People shouldn't worry that one of the best devs for writing quality, that respect the source material and have a deep national pride in the entire Witcher IP will somehow randomly forget to cover any serious plot points and character developments. It's like people that have read the books or played the games suddenly forget that CDPR aren't some random idiot like, say, Lauren Smit Hissrich...
Damn, I couldn't resist.

Legitimately, it may be the case that Netflix has people scared that CDPR will suddenly forget the source material that they love and everything they have built it into, and base it off of that shi*e instead πŸ˜›

@FuriousMachine you should know better πŸ˜› i'd think anything with a totally new cast would have to be made as a spin off, right? It could still happen that some kind of create your own Witcher spin off could happen too, but not with as in depth a story as a game with established characters.

I'm just hoping there's flashbacks in TW4 to her time with the Rats and other book events. As that would be funking fabulous in a game. No powers, just life on the road, surviving, building a sense of who she is. Letting those who don't know how her character has developed see it for the first time. Oof!

@Ravix I should absolutely have known better, yes, and I felt all kinds of silly when I realised I had overlooked the most obvious. Flashbacks to the Rats could be interesting, but I think any flashbacks would be better served as either optional side-quests or at least a separate quest line you can tackle, to an extent, in your own time. I found the forced flashbacks as part of the story in TW3 a bit jarring, as it frequently took me away from what I wanted to do.

@Dimey Right, I shan't hold my breath, then.

FuriousMachine

Ravix

@FuriousMachine yeah, what I really want, rather than a few flashbacks is a spin off telltale (I'm using this reference without really knowing exactly what they are, but I think ive got a rough idea) style game that follows the story of the novels, or some kind of animated gane or series that follows the novels on a more A to B path, seperate from the new Witcher game. Netflix did not do a good job at getting the actual story across in any way, so people who don't play fantasy action games deserve that done right, and as a bonus i'd watch or play that too, because the novels are definitely deserving of representation in the game, tv or animated space as a complete work.

FuriousMachine

@Ravix Not a bad idea, that, but seeing as the best Telltale games were all about player choice, they were best suited as new stories told in existing universes. There would have to be a compromise between how closely they should follow the novels and how much impact player choice could have on the story.

But, yeah, absolutely, Netflix cheated us out of a proper adaptation, so I share the sentiment.

FuriousMachine

Ravix

@FuriousMachine maybe I don't mean telltale, then πŸ˜… something more on the rails, or that atleast follows the main story and it's themes and events closely. Yeah, As Netflix probably own all live action and anime rights, a game is the only hope for that. At least Sirens of the Deep will have Doug Cockle in it, and it's based on one short story, so it may redeem Netflix a touch. Who knows, if this anime is good, maybe someone else will get to adapt the books into an anime series, maybe someone without the initials LSH

Because of the Witcher 4 reveal at TGA, I'm going to give Witcher 3 some play. I keep hearing it's set the standard for RPG games and no game has matched it yet. I am looking forward to it and gonna return to share my thoughts because apparently, it's a masterpiece.

If anyone has played GOW & Ragnarok, how would it compare to Witcher 3?

Ravix

@SillyBoyJudas The Witcher is totally different to GoW in almost every way, other than there's emotive storytelling in both games. Both are very good games. TW3 is an excellent RPG though, in the classic sense of player choosing dialogues etc, etc, and of much greater scale.

Be wary, it isn't great instantly, and you will possibly have to stick with it, depending on what type of games you like to start with, but it is a game capable of winning over people that don't even play games like it, I, and many others can attest to that.

Usually with games that have universal acclaim, if you stick with them they will simply let you know why it has become universally acclaimed, and they do this by how they reward you as the player playing it.

No one can just tell you it's good, you have to find it out for yourself, I suppose

Enjoy 🫑
