@JDINCINERATOR yeah hunt down is a good game. Had fun playing that with a friend of mine. Great vibe throughout. I think it was @johncalmc ‘s review that sold me on it.
@Ravix (and @ anyone else with an opinion)
Since the Dragon’s Dogma 2 thread is locked I’ll just post this here. It’s sort of a general question anyway.
The article about the huge updates to DD2 has brought it up in my mind again. I’d always considered picking it up at some point but it never really moved up the priority list enough to warrant a purchase, much less a playthrough. For context I loved the first game back on PS3 and you know how I’m a fan of the genre at large.
Where would you rank DD2 in the PS5 ‘open world fantasy game’ category? I feel like Witcher 3 has to be my highest priority in that genre, and then I’ve got Dragon Age Veilguard and the Kingdom Come games (I known they’re not as much ‘fantasy’ but still medieval swords, shields, armor and castles type of wrpg setting so I lump them in the same category) as well as Elden Ring (and Dark Souls 3), not to mention Crimson Desert and now Dawnwalker (not sure if this is really in the same genre tbh) and others soon to come like Fable and Tides of Annihilation, which I’m very interested in. Anyway, I’m not making much sense but where would DD2 rank amongst its rpg brethren? I know the recent update may change things so it may be too early to pass judgement, but just curious if I need to be considered putting DD2 into the mix. I’ve not bought it and it’s current sale price of $30 isn’t a huge investment but I have a feeling that I might never get around to it if these other games are that much better. I do love the pawn system though… 🤔
Thoughts? Do you plan on dipping back into DD2 with this recent update? Or with the upcoming DLC? Apparently it now has PSSR 2.0 support and the frame rate is unlocked and is getting up to 90 fps, as well as a bunch of gameplay improvements.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@Th3solution I've been waiting this whole time for them to implement PSSR 2.0 and now they have, that pretty much seals the deal for me..... part from it coming out at literally the "worst" time, I simply have too many games on preorder, plus DLCs for Yotei and Cronos, so DD2 will have to wait a little bit longer for me at least.
@Th3solution it was really great as a one off experience, not too taxing just a bunch of emergent fun. But the questing is nowhere on the level of a TW3 or KCD which both have the choice for dialogue in the same way as BG3, and those three together share this core Roleplay/questing DNA that i'm sure you will see in TW3 playing it Post-BG3 this time. I'd therefore rank DD2 as an action game that simply has some quests when comparing them directly. It is also bat-s*** crazy at times (good thing) it does what it does right really well though (combat, pawns, emergence, exploration, Tim Roth) so overall it is a very good, and definitely fun experience. Ranking a priority for you i'd go with:
TW3
KCD
Elden Ring
(These are all top tier and long, so would need to be broken up, probably)
But i'd have DD2 as maybe 4th ranked over CD and definitely over Veilguard, which, despite me thinking the hoopla around it was all reactionary nonsense, as a game it just is not the kind of quality i'd expect. It seemed a little false and a bit like Saints Row reboot in terms of the design and execution. I'm sure there is a good game somewhere within, but probably not for me and i'd struggle to recommend it in anywhere near the same light as the others.
Over the next two years maybe DD2 is a good option, though. I still think Fable seems like a game built for you specifically, too. But obviously we won't know until they next delay it and eventually release it 😅 I don't think the combat in Fable will be anywhere close to a DD2, but I also don't think it should matter as it is more a humerous NPC sandbox, sim-type game in a fantasy setting, and combat is secondary to having fun
@Oram77 Yeah, the backlog is backbreaking. 😅. I have more than enough games to keep me busy for a while, but I have fond memories of the first DD game and I’ve not seen anything like the pawn system elsewhere. Did you play the first game?
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@Ravix Ok, that aligns with what I suspected. I’ll go ahead and leave DD2 by the wayside for now. I was tempted by the sale price, but honestly, I think in a year or so when it might be on the docket for me, it may even be a bigger discount. Besides, I saw it on disc for about that same $30 price point, iirc, preowned. And not to bring up the beaten dead horse, but therein lies some of the issue with disc cessation— that it takes away the competitive market which keeps price under control. So even digital-only gamers are going to feel the sting when publishers no longer have to account for competition from the second hand market. I’d be willing to bet that if there wasn’t some DD2 discs floating out there being resold, then they’d still be charging $60 for DD2 still over 2 years later instead of the current base price of $40 with frequent discounts down to $30. So even digital only peeps will suffer starting 2028.
@Th3solution I do think you are overworrying on that point. It should be considered, definitely, but never think a companies thirst for money will mean keeping prices high if no one is buying the product. They will still be competing with each other for sales, and smart publishers will want their games to be the ones people buy, and there will still be codes in shops with retailers fighting for a piece of the pie, too, and thus will take less % on their bulk code sales to remain relevant. Some pie will always be better than no pie for the ever hungry pie eaters, remember. After initial release windows there may even be higher demand for better digital store sales, too, and government pressure for more fairness will be a thing. (It's probably all in motion in preparation for the cut off, anyway) At the moment people still buy discs from retail for lower, and so publishers don't need to drop digital prices as much, because they are still getting physical sales (stores buy the batches at x amount reduction, they don't pay the publisher per sale, right? So the publisher already has their cut from retail instantly, and then more with each additional restock) digitally, a publisher will know what it has sold day by day and if it needs to tweak the prices to keep sales going more fluidly than selling a chunk to all the big retail chains. It is only the second hand market that eats into things physically, and current games sales numbers are quite low in comparison to years ago. James Bond should be getting ~10 million sales within the first months, not 3 million. That is why the industry is kind of struggling on that side, I think. Demand is way down for people buying games in any way.
Now, it could be said that this is largely due to Game Pass being a huge error which has set the industry back years for the consumer. People have been trained to want more for less, and the fight should have always been against the netflixification of the industry. But people got to game cheap, yay, so they didn't really care that much about the obvious consequences of that short term gain.
The colonel always knew 🫡 we always knew. The fight is now too late and is seemingly aimed in the wrong direction, unfortunately. Consumer rights will still need to be a focus, but it should be, and it will be.
If I were sony and I'd still print and sell some discs, but only via PS direct not via retail chains, they can have the codes. It might be a bit of a compromise but it would also a test to see how serious people are about wanting to own those discs forevermore or really if it is about wanting a slightly cheaper game they can sell on afterwards. Or whether, in future, they choose the code from amazon at £55 or the disc from Sony at £69. Is that an evil thought? 😅
Genuinely, I wonder why Sony (publishers) don't test making digital the definitive cheaper way to buy games vs disc for a few months (or even until 2028) and see what happens then. They could do it with Wolverine to test it. It would be interesting to see what happened if they undercut the stores who have already bulk bought stock, too.
Why did you set me off on this tangent, lad 😂 we were talking about actual games, not the business of it 😭
@Ravix Lol, I know, tangent city here in my brain. 😅 But it’s a natural thought as I’m trying to be a responsible consumer with my budget and that’s what a sale is designed for— tip people over the edge when they are on the fence to buy something. I don’t need the game but I like to take advantage of a sale price when it happens if I ever want to play the game in the future and I feel like the price has hit a low point. I think it’s the same dopamine hit that thrifters get when they go to yard sales and Goodwill (not sure if you guys have that second hand thrift shop there) and buy junk they don’t need just because it’s cheap. 😂
But yeah, I’ve said that I like the idea of the slight bump in price for physical games, or better, the slight discount for games if you buy digital. So if I could buy Dawnwalker for $60 digital versus $70 physical, it might make think twice about it and lean towards digital if money is tight. This is what I wish Sony would talk about. Don’t just take something away, give us the plan for a better option where consumers and publishers meet in the middle.
But you’re right about post-disc cutoff that there still being competition for buying a game in the form competing against other games and maybe that will serve to control prices. I hope you’re correct about that and we’ll know soon enough. I think what will end up happening is we have a bigger divide in the pricing of games, where the highest quality games, or rather the most popular games with the longest legs, will stay at launch price for years. GTA6 might still be $80 in 2030. The lower quality/lower popularity games will have to cut prices quick to compete. This could work out well, since I like a lot of properties that aren’t top 10 sellers, but it could also backfire if it makes publishers more and more hesitant to take a chance on something that won’t sell well and will have to get steep discounts right away. I guess the same thing is happening already in the current state, but the physical second hand market serves to keep the popular games in check because the eBay is flooded with copies a few months after release which sell for 10-50% cheaper than the digital store. That is, unless your game is so awesome that people want to keep it for later replays or to display on the shelf, like I do with my favorites like FromSoft games, Housemarque’s games, some of the Sony first party, etc.
Anyway, all this to say— I’m ok to wait on DD2 for now as I have several others that should take priority and I’ll keep my $30 to use toward Dawnwalker or Control or [gasp!] The Eternal Life of Goldman… in 2027. 😜

😭
I remember saying this on Kotaku when they had Alanah Pearce as a guest make a video about how beneficial GP is to the consumer and I got attacked so much lol. Literally called it "a wolf in sheeps clothing" but responses were "oh you're just jealous" and "more options is only a net positive" etc.
This happened during the peak of Phil's charm offensive (Asha is in the same phase now). It's why when I see the reactions and think pieces now, I just laugh. I remember how when Jim Ryan and Bobby Kotick said it was stupid and unfeasible and, the Xbox Defender Base came out in full force. Especially on this site.
