@LN78 I've been in Act II at 50% for about the last 20 hours I'd played the game, and I'd not yet entered act II. It just triggers on areas, I think. As soon as you enter the beach it says 25%, mountain pass 50%. There's no way for the PS to know what part of a multi path rpg means you've actually advanced, so it's just random. I doubt Larian want to code all the intricacies to tell a playstation console actual progress, as it'd be so convoluted, so it's just big broad segments. Easy enough to ignore the activity cards once you know this, I find.
Some games activity cards can be good for, something with little self contained levels, but RPG's with massive quest logs, not so much
Yeah, it just throws a percentage out there and that's fine by me. A continue button is all that's needed for it. Actually, that's all that's needed for any game. Anything else just convolutes the system beyond what it should be.
In act 3, Gale reacted to something I didn't even have the option of doing yet, first long rest in act 3, did anyone else have this and does the act like it didn't have the glitch later on? Then it would only be a minor inconvenience in addition to a minor spoiler.
Apparently the director of publishing sent out a twitter poll to gauge interest for a physical version (in the West).
Hopefully it's gonna happen, I thought it might ... fingers crossed.
Phew. I'm progressing well through the shadow-cursed lands now, and by progressing well I mean doing/fighting/looting literally anything or everything I can, following any path, any quest, talking to every NPC and generally sorting my inventory out periodically, which is maybe my least favorite part, as I have about 80kgs of stuff on my person at all times that I'll never even use. I keep thinking yes I will poison my blades at the start of a fight, and use thrown items, but I never do.
I did craft a poison that, although not quest specific, I want to try and remember to use on a certain Boss NPC, eventually. Just for my own entertainment, as it's a recipe from the bosses own family (a family whom all mysteriously murdered or exploded themselves after my devious deceptions π« π« π« ), and that will please me greatly as a final F-U to the whole lot of them π
But I also broke into a room in moonrise that basically had mini spoilers, or I guess little teasers for things I will later discover as part of the story arc, so I'm quite pleased I've unravelled some mysteries myself by reading in-game finds, at least partly unravelled. They were surprisingly big discoveries. Definitely didn't expect them in book/letter form π
Seems like there is only 2 big side quests before I get to move on the main story now, but I imagine even they will branch out for a bit. I already know in part that I'm searching for something very important, as the big belly barman let slip quite a bit of info already, it's just I've been on a few hundred tangents before following up with that part π

@Ravix So, does the game have encumbered status if your inventory weight gets too high? Does it make you move more slowly or is it just a hard cap where you canβt add anything else until you clear some weight?
βWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.β
I'm never really encumbered, it's just I pick up so much stuff and at some point I have to sell it, and there are about 100 items to select through every time I have to sell stuff, because I never use my special arrows and poisons, or any potions haha, so it's more of a visual annoyance when I have to sort out what I'm doing with items.
It's pretty user friendly in you can just 'send to camp' any item you find, so any armours or weapons I just send to camp straoght away, and then pick a moment to sell it all by standing next to a trader and hitting 'travel to camp' pick it all up and sell it by returning to right by the trader with fast travel on exiting camp.
I just need to learn to use some items more, so I don't end up stacking them and "saving them for later" as I never end up using them later anyway lol.
I sold a bunch of scrolls for a tonne of coin, as I never used them, so that's a start xD

@Ravix What percentage of the playtime is spent: 1) in menus with stuff like organizing items to sell, poring over armor and upgrades, shuffling party members, etc. vs. 2) time spent in combat vs. 3) time spent within dialogue trees vs. 4) time spent walking around exploring vs. 5) time spent watching cutscenes?
@Th3solution initially it does take a little more in menus, reading what things will do, just as you get used to how you are building a character. But not really that much since, it's kind of automatic, really, as I know what kind of things suit each character. I sometimes like to read descriptions, found texts etc so I'll still do that, but I enjoy that so it's not really wasted time, as it builds the world I'm in. And every so often I will go through all of my characters, just to check I'm still happy with all their skills and abilities, and my only issue in that is out of all the companions, I really enjoy using 5 of them, and you can only take 3 with you π so for that I'll just take whoever suits where I'm going, or who I think will, anyway. Be that combat wise, or character wise.
Combat depends how you play, it's possible to initiate combat with literally anyone in the world (I think) like literally you could befriend an NPC and then click attack during friendly dialogue haha, and there is no shortage of potential enemies, but there are gameplay ways to avoid fights too, even vs some of the more evil alignment beings, so Deception, pursuation, intimidation, race and class based traits, knowledge or learning something specific relating to a specific person or situation that leads to more options etc. But to me it feels like the exact perfect balance where you will do some talking, do some exploration, get into some fights, solve some riddles or find some new information, advance a storyline etc. It flows nicely. And if you go to rest at camp, more story elements kick in during that chill time.
The vast majority of the game is all done with reason too, be it talking, fighting or exploring, like a proper good rpg should be, and you get out of it what you want to put in.
I've never once thought, why am I doing this, or why am I going here, which is phenomenal for a game so big. But also, it can be done to a smaller scale too if you want, focus on just 3 allies, keep your nose out of other people's business if it doesn't benefit you, or just kill your way to a solution instead of spending time finding multiple potential solutions, and you can whizz through much faster like that π
@Falcon94 haha I met him yesterday or the day before, and he was gone within mere moments. Bard life π
He did leave something that means I can now experiment with dual crossbows, to see if that is more favourable though. So now I'm rocking: a life stealing short sword, either sheild of faith? And shield of Flaming something or other, depending on my mood. One gives a spell slot and a free cast of Aid, one burns people that miss and boosts AC by 4 with a bonus action. Then the firey crossbow and a crossbow that deals more damage to burning foes. I also have a ring or something with executioners
trait, which pops up and tells me my attack rolls to decide if i want to use it, which entertains me greatly, as it says things like "you need to roll a 15 to hit, you rolled a 38" π which makes me think my build is going okay lol.
I was shocked by how big that whole area was (which I should have learned by now not to be shocked) I was thinking yeah, nearly done with ACT II, then... nope π and then once reaching the end, I realised I better go back and help Halsin and make sure i've talked to everyone, just in case they have further tasks. The portal fight was a bit challenging, until I got the hang of my newer AOE spells, and used Karlach as a beacon to gather a bunch of enemies in the middle of the arena. And then it was much easier. It was good practice though, and I've tweaked my builds a little to cover more situations.
Feel like next time I play the game will really kick off, due to the Point of No Return message π excited
@Th3solution to jump in to answer your questions too, I believe the game balances itself well between the fighting, exploring, cut scenes and dialog choices. The one area where it may take longer, depends on how detailed you want to get. If you want to fit out your whole camp of companions it can get a bit tedious switching party members in and out of your group. For me, once I found my main 3 I wanted to play with, I stuck with them and sold everything else. The other area that may slow you down is adjusting the radial menu for each character. I just let the game decide what goes where on each radial menu, but I can see it taking quite a while if you want to adjust each radial wheel to your liking and towards the end you have enough radials to move a bus. Overall though the game is quite balanced. At no time did I think,"ungh another cut scene" or having to explore vast empty areas, or having a fight every 100 feet. One of the many reasons It is my game of the year...so far.
@Elodin Thanks for that info. I was worried since it sounds like a really dense RPG with a lot of mechanics that it might be one of those where thereβs a ton of menu management. I donβt mind doing armor, weapon, and skill adjusting frequently and I think Iβm more tolerant of that than most people, but still wanted to make sure it wasnβt a crazy amount.
βWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.β
@Elodin@Th3solution I'm really anal about my radial dials π and even then it doesn't take that long. For a Cleric type: 1 for weapon, shield and short range damage spell actions. 1 for healing based stuff. One for attack buffs, debuffs and AOE etc π
For my character 1 for slicing and dicing, shield actions and attack cantrips. 1 for Bardic Inspiration Attacks and Crossbows. 1 or 2 for Spells, buffs, debuffs.
This saves me a lot of time in actual combat for relatively little time spent setting it up too, as I know where things are and what they will cost to use, free spell action, spell slot, inspiration, single use, each-turn action etc.
Time to stop worrying and start playing π

@Ravix βTime to stop worrying and start playingβ π I knowβ¦ Iβve been following the discussion and getting more convinced I want to play the game, but Iβm mopping up a few other games first.
In fact, I see that you went back to FF16, which is my current main game and Iβm really enjoying it. Over on the other thread you hit on the concern I was having which prompted my question about BG3 and whether there was a ton of cut scenes or menu micro management , because like you say, one of the parts to FF16 is that thereβs a lot of long cinematic cutscenes and prolonged boss battles. And they are awesome moments, to be sure, but itβs just something that I need to take into account when I sit down for a play session. I have to realize I might be stuck in a 30 minute sequence at any moment so I plan accordingly. With BG3, it sounds like thereβs a nice balance and so it flows well without feeling chained to your console until a series of events completes.
βWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.β
@Th3solution yeah, only a few big moments are like that in FF16, as it will still autosave the rest of the time, but once you're locked in to something major, you're really locked in haha. I did have one firey fight that I beat, and then I had to go out, and I thought, well I've won, so it will have autosaved at some point after or during this cutscene, but it had not, so I had to redo the whole fight lol
In BG3 you can literally save mid-conversation or mid-fight, or mid pretty much anything other than an actual cutscene, and pick it up again later with no issues. And there's not really any long cutscenes that don't involve dialogue input, so you're fine for stopping at any moment, if needed.
@Falcon94 haha the portal was taking loads of damage from the ravens and archers alone, and the other stuff was a lot more tanky and powerful, so I wasted most of my turns not letting the big stuff get close. Second time was a lot easier though, as I managed to get them to aggro Karlach while I cleared up. I'd hate to try that fight on Tactician mode, as I imagine the Portal would be even weaker π
Yeah, next time I'm on I head to Moonrise for the final meeting... I actually had more to do than I imagined before I went into the point of no return area (which went really well for my party, in a story arc investment kind of way) but I found some great bonus interactions, including getting a very sticky arm π whilst exploring Moonrise some more, also met The Man Who Was, as I realised I had one tiny corner of the map undiscovered. I'd already found the item he sought anyway.
I've just remembered there's one thing I've definitely missed before the PoNR π there was some lanterns lit somewhere and someone said to not extinguish them, or something, and Tav was like "maybe I can extinguish them...", but I left it long ago, and forgot to come back. But tbh, why would I want to ignore the warning and do that (in character), so I doubt I missed much other than some fight XP, which is the only reason I can think of for turning off the thing that is protecting that area, and that would be a player based reason, unless you're character is actively looking to fight monsters and risk the party's lives for the hell of it π

@Falcon94 hahahaha I've just done part one of the KT battle. And it was hilarious. I came in casting sleet storm on him to disrupt any concentration spells he might try, and then ice storm right after, and he just spent the whole fight falling over on his ass as I made my way towards him π€£π€£π€£ there was something incredibly pleasing about the main boss being so helpless π
Downstairs, the main battle, was pretty easy too, with some AOE ice to start on their close group, and sending Gale misty stepping up to the rafters to rain fire down below afterwards. And then general ranged and melee in-between with the others that escaped the bowl of ice and fire. And some friendly Gnolls were taking out the archers for me ππ
Big story spoiler stuff relating to names and events for anyone not up to the end of act II, so do not click if you are just a casual browser of the thread
So, after clearing up everything in the sticky, red, nasty mind flayer colony, which was unsurprisingly pack with things to do, yet again. I made it to the main boss fight section of Act II. Absolutely epic btw. At first i randomly convinced Ketheric to fling himself into a pit, but I didn't really like that, as I was looking forward to a fight, so I reloaded. But id noticed he'd recaptured Nightsong, so what i did for fun was turn my Tav invisible, before speaking to Ketheric, sinply strolling by to release her, at which point Ketheric started talking to Karlach, She told him we were here to end his evil etc, naturally. Then I hopped my invisible tav behind him and initiated combat with some crossbows. Karlach threw that mind stone thing at him, the one you can pick up in one of the rooms in the colony, that made the party strong in melee but weak of mind, thinking I could debuff him for ranged spells, but it just smashed and knocked him on his ass again π€£π€£ I then beat him and all the minions quite easily.
Then of course phase 2 kicks in, and I absolutely destroyed the big old bone apostle of Myrkul, to finally defeat Thorm.
So much fun, and the story really kicked up a few notches.
I'm only speculating, but something the dream visitor said did not sit right with me, either, with what I've learned from other notes and story events about the plans of the dead three, Bane, Myrkul and Bhaal, via Orin and Gortash, and previously Ketheic, so I'm keeping my eye out for something specific related to that too π
