Massively productive day for me! Managed to get everything done in work before I break up for a 6-day Easter weekend… and most importantly, I finished off my second playthrough on Resident Evil HD Remake.

I was a little bit anxious about this one too as I’d watched Adam McDermott’s Platinum Journey (embedded below; check out his reaction at around 5:05 🤭) prior to me starting the game around a fortnight ago and he missed the CQC FTW trophy for a knife-only run on his first playthrough for some reason (maybe accidentally stomping on a zombie head as he ran past seems the most likely reason) and he had to do the knife-only run all over. Thankfully it popped for me and I managed to save Jill and Rebecca to boot.

Next onto The Real Survivor with Jill where, while it’s more difficult, the item boxes don’t connect and you have to manually aim… at least I can let everyone die! 😅

Good show. I think the defensive items can screw you over during knife only runs. However I can’t remember if Leon has a defensive item slots.
PS. Gaming doesn’t break for Easter.

@CaptD ahh yes, maybe his knife-only was screwed by a defensive-item. That’s probably more likely than a running stomp actually.

And agreed… I may have broke up from work for Easter… but the Resi-grind continues for sure 🫡

Resi-update: started my Real Survivor playthrough today and after some real issues early on (there were points where I was questioning myself tbh 😅), I started to make some good headway around 1pm. The issues I was facing turned out to be really good practice for my upcoming speed runs too tbh, as I was repeating certain sections so many times between save points that it really started to embed the optimal routes etc.

You know a stone-cold classic when the more times you play a section, the more that you start to realise the brilliance of the design. Now that I kinda feel pretty comfortable with the layout of the game, what were initially treacherous adventures out for certain items are now point-to-point shuttle-runs without even having to check the map. It’s gonna be interesting to think about how I’d rate this game within my all-time top games list by the time I’m done. I’m already far more positive about it than I anticipated… and would probably find a spot for it in my top 30 right now… we’ll see in a week or two.

By the end of todays play I’ve managed to set both Stone & Metal Objects in the gate under the main staircase and am just about to see Lisa for the final time this playthrough before entering the lab.

So I went down into the lounge and I just couldn’t let it lie, knowing I was that close to the end of my playthrough. So I popped back up to the gaming room, booted the PS4 up and finished the run. Much to my surprise I managed to finish the Real Survivor playthrough in 2hrs 28mins, so got all the speed-run trophies and all the weapons! Really happy with that as it was the 3 hr speed-run that I was dreading the most.

So it’s Chris with Invisible Enemies next and then a very easy playthrough without saving… or vice-versa I guess 🤔 and it’ll be all done.

@graymamba
Wow well done on that especially the speed run trophies as well, whilst they weren’t anything to get concerned about doing them during real survivor is mighty impressive.
Invisible enemies isn’t a problem, the nosave isn’t fun...just don’t run with those fuel canisters.

@graymamba Splendid work, mate. I’m really pleased at how the game has clicked with you. I’m excited to see your response to RE2, 3, and 4 remakes. You’ll feel right at home with the more action combat and updated controls, and yet still be able to enjoy the puzzley survivor horror aspects.

Cheers guys, I was particularly pleased after logging off yesterday evening I gotta be honest.

@CaptD you’re probably right about there being no need for my concern for the speed-runs mate… it is one of the admittedly rare trophy requirements I always dread though tbh. When I first started trophy hunting, the mere sight of online, difficulty-specific and speed-run requirements were enough to put me off entirely. And while that did change over time… and all three still weigh on me a bit to this day, it’s the rare speed-run requirements out there which seem to cause me the most anxiety. As a consequence of that anxiety though… once done, I probably get the most satisfaction from them too tbh.

@Th3solution I did play through REmake 2 back during the start of covid… and did really enjoy it. It was when I was still finding what I liked and didn’t like in gaming though after years of being very casual with the hobby. I was quite new to trophy hunting at the time too and the speed-runs required (ironically given my reply to the Captain above) that put me off going for the plat at the time. I’m looking forward to addressing that and putting it right… as well as just fully embracing the series. The beauty of coming to a classic series late is getting to consume them on your own terms I find. You never have to wait a full dev-cycle to see what happens next and can just piecemeal it as and when you fancy. I’m aware that there are a couple of significant dips in quality with RE (namely 6 and to a lesser extent 5) but on the whole it’s clear there is a lot of quality there. 4 REmake and Village in third-person mode are the ones I’m most pumped about… but I’m even a little excited to try 6 just out of curiosity. Judging from the first one it’s gonna be a proper ride these next few years!

@graymamba oh, apologies as I forgot you already played RE2. I do think having the context of RE1 will enhance your revisit to it though.

RE3 remake feels a lot like an expansion for RE2, as the gameplay is quite similar, just a little different setting and also the return of Jill as a main character. The remake got a lot of criticism due to its mild deviation from the original game, primarily with some omitted content, but since I’ve never played the original I didn’t miss what I didn’t know. So you’ll have the same advantage of not knowing the difference.

I’ve just recently played RE4 so you know my thoughts there. And I’ve tried RE5 briefly and thought it was okay, but I really need to devote more energy to it in order to give it a chance. Probably it’s inevitable remake will come out before I ever get to it. Code Veronica and Zero will need to get remade for me to try them out. And RE6… I’m morbidly curious about it also. Everyone says it’s awful and to just skip it, but I heard on a podcast recently someone defending it as better than RE2. 😅 I think there’s a definite preferred order that the game’s multiple selectable storylines should be played in, and if you play the campaigns in a less ideal sequence then it’s a gameplay and narrative disaster.

And that’s the no-saves run done for Ink is for Squids. Piece of cake with the unlimited rocket launcher I earned from going under 3 hours yesterday.

@Th3solution no apologies needed mate, I don’t expect people to remember what I’ve played and haven’t etc. If it’s one thing I’d never level against you it’s ignorance, quite the opposite 🍻.

I’ve heard the odd dissenting voice about 6 too (dissenting as in, against the general consensus if you get me). They mention that while the narrative is awful and it totally abandons its survival-horror heritage… that what’s left is a highly playable action game merging third-person melee and shooting. I’d actually put money on me quite liking it tbh.

So with the invisible Tyrant downed and Chris scarpering out of the lab leaving two innocent ladies to meet their doom for the Every Man for Himself trophy, Resident Evil HD is dunzo. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve loved it but… I think the fifth playthrough did start to feel like one too many tbh and I’m glad it’s over.

I’m gonna take a day off tomorrow as this past week has been pretty intense… and then on to Devil May Cry for what would make plat #225 (if I’m successful that is). There’s no guarantees with this one though… I’ve popped the odd tricky plat in my time but my dualsense-is-tingling on this one, telling me that this could well be the toughest yet… and possibly beyond my upper-limit. Only one way too find out 😉

@graymamba Congrats, colonel! Nice work on RE. I didn’t know that Devil May Cry was such a difficult platinum. Good luck!

graymamba

@Th3solution cheers buddy, I most certainly will be needing it. PSN Profiles and PlayStation Trophies both have it as an 8/10 but many trophy hunters who’ve tried and failed/succeeded have suggested it’s a 9 or even a 10. I think it’s that information together with the need for fast-reflexes with even the simplest Character-action games that make me think this is gonna be crazy! 😅

Started Devil May Cry today and it’s good. It’s obviously old and missing some little things that subsequent Character-action games brought to the table… but it’s still very playable and still quite good looking in HD to be fair.

I’m probably around two-thirds of the way through I’d imagine and considering that this playthrough is on Normal and I’ll have to play subsequent runs on Hard and Dante Must Die… I’ve already had the odd struggle or two 😅. Hopefully I’ll get the odd hour or two after work the remaining weeknights this week to finish of this run and get to make a start of run #2 on the weekend.

First of all congrats on your accomplishments with REmake @graymamba! Good job on besting all those different modes.

And yeah good luck with Devil May Cry on the harder difficulties. I just about beat it on Hard mode when I played it again a few years back and it was pretty damn gruelling.

I've never done a Dante Must Die playthrough in any of the games and DMC1 is pretty tough (Though 3 is even harder!)

@HallowMoonshadow cheers foxy, yeah with the exception of 2… the whole series is pretty much an uphill struggle tbh.

While there is nowhere near any certainty that I’ll be able to get this done… it’s the anxiety of a very hard plat every now and then which I find quite exciting. I was only saying to @WhiteMoose the other day that I couldn’t take going for 8+-outta-10’s on the reg… but I do appreciate the different vibe it brings out on the… erm… ‘irreg’ I guess 😏

Managed to get a little Devil May Cry in this evening and am now on mission 20… and I’d imagine quite near the end. Well I hate Nightmare! I’ve struggled with him/her in all the confrontations so far but this one on mission 20 is a troll… not looking forward to trying it on Dante Must Die at all.

As far as the game itself goes, I like it but… and I’m probably gonna pi$$ off the purists here but I actually think I prefer the old God of War games. It’s strange coming from me (in particular as I always moan about the parry-centric direction souls-likes are going) but I miss being able to block and perfect parry. Sure, I like the addition of guns and such but… maybe I’m missing something 🤔.

First playthrough of Devil May Cry on Normal done and I honestly have no idea how I’m gonna manage this on Dante Must Die!

Technically speaking I managed to get the trophy for completing a playthrough without using any continues… in reality I just exited out the game and loaded up my save a fair few times 😅. Also got all the secret missions and all the blue orbs done… so theres that.

Hard mode next then… and with how difficult some of those bosses are on Normal, it’ll be… 😐… ‘interesting’ at the very least. 🫠

I have a question. How well is Monster Hunter Rise to play for Playstation 4? I still have plain Monster Hunter Rise for my Switch Lite. Still havent played the Outbreak expansion.

just wondering how Rise is to play for Playstation 4. People play online with that game currently or everyone moved on to Wilds?
